:) Click to report rating    5/4/10 5 5 5 Dr Jim Porter is a dynamic, dedicated, direct, disciplined surgeon. He is friendly, down-to-earth, sat down with Linda and me, and answered our many questions completely and thoroughly. He is caring and committed, and listens. He is the best! I am a 70 year old retired orthopedic surgeon, had a rising PSA, and one positive Gleason 6 core out of a total of 27 core biopsies. I had been extensively on the internet studying my options. I elected robotic surgery and Dr. Porter as my surgeon for all the aforementioned reasons, but the clincher was talking to Swedish OR staff who spoke so highly of him! My DaVinci prostatectomy was done in January 2010, with clean margins. I had no incontinence, and potency within 3 weeks with Viagra assist. I was back in the gym doing cardio right after the catheter was removed, and back pumping iron, and jogging within 4 weeks, and biking in 7 weeks. 2 month PSA was<0.01ng/ml. He is truly a Surgeon's surgeon, and simply THE BEST! Frank Paudler, MD

:) Click to report rating    4/24/10 5 5 5 Dr. Porter did a terrific surgery! I am very pleased and amazed how quickly was my recovery. I highly recommend Dr. Porter for his knowledge, skills, and commitment to the robotic surgery procedure for prostate removal. I shudder to think of having to endure the traditional prostate surgery recovery process.

:) Click to report rating    3/15/10 5 4 5 This doctor is the best in the country!!! He is personable, extremely knowledgable and has actually had the robotic surgery himself... Mike had his surgery at noon was back in room at 700 pm and was discharged at 10:30 am the next day... was back at work in 7 days. We tell everyone we know to use Dr. Porter... Basically we trusted him with Mikes life as his cancer was quite advanced

:) Click to report rating    1/16/10 5 5 5 I first encountered Dr. Jim Porter at University of Washington Medical Center, searching for a permanent solution to a repeated blockage of a ureter. After interviewing several surgeons, I chose Dr. Porter because of his knowledge, training, skill set and his absolute belief that he could finally resolve this ongoing problem. He sat on the edge of his chair, looked me in the eye and told me we were partners in this venture. I had complete faith that he would do his best to avoid open surgery - he tried for hours with his robotics but eventually had no choice but to go the open route. Throughout the recovery, Dr. Porter and his nurses stayed in touch with me,even apologized for putting me through the pain and trauma. He is one of the few MDs that I have felt professionally and emotionally actually cared about his patients and one of the very few for whom I would wait hours to see...he's that good. Kudos to Dr. Porter...even if he is a Buckeye!

:) Click to report rating    10/2/09 5 5 5 Dr. Porter performed partial nephrectomy da Vinci robotic kidney surgery on me, saving my kidney, removing 2 tumors, with most incredible outcome possible. I only lost 13% functionality, walked very night of surgery, home 2 days later, up and about immediately, back working from home next week. Dr. Porter is the first surgeon to perform this procedure from the side and back. I feel so grateful and fortunate to have a surgeon of his caliber, expertise and warmest demeanor operate on me. Before surgery I extensively researched surgeons coast to coast, and he is clearly the most experienced robotic surgeon anywhere. He's leading the way, training and teaching locally in Seattle and globally at international symposiums. He treated me so specially, with such incredible genuine, personal care, above and beyond any and all expections. He was there everyday for me, first thing in the morning, again in afternoon; post surgery follow-up, he is there. Quite simply, he is The Best of the best.

:) Click to report rating    1/13/09 5 5 5 As a Canadian heading to the U.S. for surgery you want to be confident in both the technique and the surgeon you select. Dr. Porter uses the da Vinci robotic system to treat Prostate Cancer and his skillful use of this technique far exceeded my expectations for the overall outcome of my surgery. Without question I would do it all over again. I walked from the hospital to the hotel 24 hours after surgery, experienced no pain whatsoever, the usual post-prostate surgery side effects are either non-existent or minimal (6 weeks out from surgery), and my post-surgery PSA is undetectable; really what more could a patient ask for. Dr. Porter was very helpful and honest with all of our concerns going into surgery and I was made aware of all the risks. I would highly recommend Dr. Porter without any hesitation!

:) Click to report rating    12/3/08 5 5 5 Wonderful Doctor, great follow-up. Two months after surgery we got a call from Dr. Porter checking up with his patient. Can't say enough good things about this Doctor. If you have prostate cancer, this is the doctor to go to.

:) Click to report rating    11/10/08 5 5 5 After being diagnosed with PC in one small place by another doctor, I decided to get a second opinion after looking at all the possible treatments and got a recommendation from my own family doctor, who highly recommended Dr. Porter. Dr. Porter decided to have his people look at my biopsy, the results came back negitive. A biopsy was performed 6 months later and PC was discovered in a different place. Short story, had operation, sexually functional in (2) weeks, walking 3 miles and no incontinance at all. After 4 weeks full Gym activity, 2 months <0.01 PSA

:) Click to report rating    5/5/08 4 5 5 I was diagnosed with PC at 62 years old.Even though the DaVinci prostatectomy was available in Canada I had chosen to go at my own expenses to the U.of Chicago Med. Center because of the amazing skills of Dr Kevin Zorn who is one of the best in the world. But because I live in Victoria BC Canada he recommended without any hesitation his colleague Dr James Porter of Seattle. They both demonstrate and teach together other surgeons about this very delicate robotic surgery. For this I am very very grateful to Dr Kevin Zorn. On Feb. 2008 Dr J.Porter performed the robotic surgery in Seattle. It was complicated, long and difficult, but everything went very well.I experienced NO pain.Dr J. Porter is not only a wonderfully skilled robotic surgeon with the best of hands,he is also a wonderful person, always with a big smile;he is very pleasant, humble, and very, very kind.I am extremely satisfied with my experience with Dr J.Porter.I highly recommend him without any hesitation!G.Vaccaro Canada

:) Click to report rating *  5/2/07 5 5 After being diagnosed with PC I researched for months and decided on the Da vinci prostatectomy. It wasn't offered locally so I talked with a number of surgeons around the country, finally deciding on Dr. Porter. In 2005 he performed the surgery and everything went very well, without complications; in fact I experienced NO incontinence and recovered full potency within the month. My recovery was swift and relatively pain free. I’ve had PSA tests periodically since my prostate surgery, all reporting undetectable. I’m very pleased with the outcome to date and very satisfied with my experience with James Porter, MD, the Swedish Urology Group and the staff of Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. :) Click to report rating    4/13/07 5 5 Dr. Porter is extremely knowledgable in the field of robotic surgery. He is a very down-to-Earth guy that is all business when he steps into his professional environment...he tells you exactly what will happen, what to expect, and why. He will not sugar-coat his evaluations...very direct and to-the-point. He does not put on pretenses or talk down to you. He is the type of guy that you might want to have over to your backyard BBQ, but when he walks into Swedish Hospital, this is the man that I want to have working on my surgical case. He is thorough, exact, and does not have any 'deity ego' requiring feeding. He is confident and self-assured without being egotistical. I was very comfortable with him and his staff, and will recommend him without hesitaiton of any kind. Dr. Porter is extremely skilled using the DaVinci machine, and my recovery has been very short as a result of his expertise. I had prostate cancer...notice the word 'had'. IMHO, he is the best. He is located in Seattle.

:) Click to report rating    2/4/07 5 5 My husband was diagnosed w/prostate cancer. Dr Porter performed the surgery w/DaVinci machine @ Swedish hospital. Very skilled surgeon. At time of surgery, he determined that one nerve bundle needed removal. It was a good call, because the biopsy showed that the cancer had indeed spread to those nerves. He was successful in removing all of the cancer. Recovery time was quick & pain was much less than expected. Highly recommend Dr. Porter & the very caring staff @ Swedish Hospital.

:) Click to report rating    11/1/06 4 5 Dr. Porter was efficient and direct. His office staff was very professional. My appointment for prostate surgery was delayed only because of an unavoidable personal family problem, for Dr. Porter, but I was not bothered by the delay. The rescheduled surgery was on time. The operation was very quick, 1 night in the hospital. My recovery is going very well. I went walking around downtown Seattle 3 days after the surgery. It was uncomfortable but I was encouraged to do so by Dr. Porter and his staff. I have stayed very active and I have had no unexpected problems. I?m %100 satisfied with the Swedish Urology Group and with Dr. James R. Porter, MD.

:) Click to report rating    9/7/06 5 5 extremely fantastic surgeon: he is experienced, skillful, academically up to date - you are lucky if you get him as a surgeon and we are fortunate to have someone of his caliber here in seattle - i had to have surgery and maybe there are 5 guys in the entire US who could have preformed it - it was complicated and difficult, he did it and it went well. keep in mind, as with any doctor - biology is biology and they can only do so much - but if it is at all possible, he can do it. plus, he is a nice guy.

:) Click to report rating    3/4/06 5 5 Tops in his field in the Northwest. He is the head of Robotic Laparascopic Prostatectomy Surgery at Swedish Hosp in Seattle. He held same position at Univ of Wash Medical Center for several years. Has done over 200 RLRP procedures and taught many more. Also has done several hundred traditional RPs. Uses the DaVinci robot. Very knowledgeable and up to date on latest surgical techniques (when I inquired about a technique to enhance uretha connection he cited study and author in his answer - very impressive). My surgical results and recovery have so far been spectacular! Incontinence nearly gone in 6 weeks, zero PSA on initial followup, ED already beginning to show improvemment. He is in strong demand both as a surgeon and to teach/demonstrate the DaVinci Robot. Personable and attentive to the patient - answered all our questions during a three hour initial consultation and one hour presurgery discussion! Dr. Porter is an absolute WINNER!!

:) Click to report rating    2/5/06 4 4 He's very knowledgeable and skilled and is *very focused* during the time you meet with him. He is willing to answer any question but be sure to have all your questions written down so you can move through the questions one after another. If you pause, he'll assume you're done and he'll move along to the next agenda item. However, he's a very good physician/surgeon and is dedicated to his work. I will continue to be his patient.
