Dr Horowitz came highly recommended but I was warned that the administration and office support was poor. I had difficulty getting onto his waiting list as both the telephone & emails were ignored. However, when I saw him in clinic for a three hour consult I found him to be caring, compassionate and knowledgeable. I left elated, confident that I was in the best hands.
Unfortunately things have deteriorated and it now seems that Hus patients come second to promoting his book and the conference circuit. The office is support is so poor it's bordering on negligent. My General Practioner has never received any correspondence from the office despite repeated promises to do so. Requests for copies of notes are ignored or met with being told that notes aren't available. I don't know how a medical facility can legally operate without keeping patient records. Booking appointments is a lottery: a request for a 2-3 month follow up (as per Dr H's request) was once met with an appointment over 8 months later. Getting any advice inbetween appointments is impossible no matter how urgent and desperate the enquiry. The only thing the office excels at is taking payment .Though they often don't bother to actually send out invoices. Patients are expected to rely on their own notes taken during telephone consults as the office does follow up consults with a written treatment plan. Trying to 'keep up' with a Foggy 'Lymes Brain' is difficult . In short there is no back up, the office staff when you can get hold of them are often unhelpful bordering on rude. if you have a query or an unsure of how to proceed after a telephone consult you will be charged again. I invested a lot of time and money travelling to see Dr Horowitz and am now seriously considering starting again with another consultant not because I doubt his knowledge but because I am doubtful of his commitment to his patients & because his clinic is run so poorly.
Office staff is non-responsive & not compassionate for very sick people. I would have rated much higher if dr h was in the office more. He was great when he was there but now spends too much time promoting his book & himself now. It seems like he "forgot" about the patients he initially was trying to help. I would appreciate him helping "the average lyme patient" at reasonable fees. Costs are so high & wait time for new patients seems unbelievable. Existing patients don't have supportive staff.
Dr. Horowitz' front-desk staff does not do a top-notch job either answering the phone, nor responding politely and immediately to requests. At one time in the past, they did. Despite the problems in dealing with the office, if you have serious Lyme Disease, there are two important things to remember. First, Dr. Horowitz is one of the foremost experts in the country who got that way by actually listening to patients, and deciding, compassionately, to treat our actual symptoms, and not follow a nonsensical dictate by the medical establishment that Lyme Disease cannot last more than a month. Second, because he "violated" the medical standard at the time, he was persecuted by the medical establishment, including that he was investigated by New York State, and his office was dropped by many insurance companies. It took years for this issue to be resolved, and for Dr. Horowitz to be vindicated. In short, he went through a long ordeal, for simply being a caring, intelligent doctor, who lived up to his medical oathe. I therefore say that if he is not always chipper, do not judge him for it. In my own case, in 1998 I went to three specialists in Manhattan, who failed to diagnose my Lyme Disease. I was nearly incapacitated, mentally and physically, by the time I went to Dr. Horowitz. After being correctly diagnosed, and treated with antibiotics for a full year, I was back to practicing law. He saved my life.
Very disappointed in the care that I received from this office. At one time this practice might have been top notch. He seems more interested in his book and his ego being stroked than running his practice. Also he doesn't even follow his own book, I never had most of the testing he recommends in his book. He seems to think lyme patients have unlimited funds for useless supplements and tests. I always left his office feeling very hopeless with a big supplement bill. My advise ...he needs to retire and do his tv spots. Find a dr. who is in it for the right reason because clearly his isn't anymore.
This doctor should be ashamed of himself. This has to be the rudest office I've ever dealt with. The staff is terrible and calls are not returned. Ever! You can't get an answer from anyone. I'm talking phone calls, emails, AND written letters to the office. Not even the courtesy of a call back. Not once and this was after 15+ calls, etc. For a doctor who is supposedly trying to help people his office is the exact opposite. Seems like this MD is more concerned with being on TV than helping people. How about a $1000 consult fee!! Seriously? We are all broke from batteling this disease and all he wants to do is capitalize off of sick people. There is not a doctor here anymore. Just someone making a ton of money and not caring about anyone. Thanks for adding to the list of horrendous experiences for me when all in trying to do is get better.
These days, Dr Horowitz shows very little interest in doing even the most basic, bare minimum requirements one expects of a responsible md...things like, say, showing-up (atleast every once in awhile?) at his overbooked, poorly staffed and poorly run medical practice, or on being the kind of compassionate, genuinely caring doctor that (i assume) he Once was- before he realized that book deals and tv spots and speaking in dumb-downed media digestible soundbytes and riding on the coattails of one's past credibility & reputation- - was all SO much more fun, more profitable, and a whole lot easier. As a patient, my experience with dr. Horowitz has been so disheartening- to describe himself as "the doctor of patients' last resort," and then to treat these patients- who he himself characterizes as sick, desperate, and at the end of their rope-- as though they're an afterthought, or an unsatisfying, mostly forgotten side project-feels thoughtless. cruel. Like one more slap in the face. (This, ofcourse, has only been my personal experience, one that falls at the extreme-negative end of the spectrum. I want to be clear that i think of my experience as an exception to the norm- many, if not most patients seem to have much more positive things to say, so...)
Dr. Horowitz is one of the longest standing doctors treating lyme. He save lives and had a top notch team for a long time. His team is falling apart. Patients get treated negatively if they call in asking for help and it often takes weeks to get a response. He has high clinical and front office staff turnover and they have a negative attitude. He is traveling a lot and not very involved and maybe without any sympathy for the patients dealing with reality which is not so good in Hyde Park.
Yeah, and be careful when you call the "emergency line." If it's late, and your issue, which could be subjectively interpreted many ways, is not clearly an emergency, Dr. Horowitz will read you the riot act.' If it's late, he will answer prematurely irritated by your interruption of his sleep, I guess. My suggestion would be just not to call. If it's an emergency, then he will say "go to the emergency room; don't call me." If it's not, in his opinion, then you are going to get a lecture on what you did wrong and what a "thinking" person would have done. Just don't use that line. It never turns out okay., either way.
I have suffered with chronic lyme to 4 years and visited dozens of doctors with no success. Dr. Horowitz is the first doctor that gets it. He spent 3 solid hours with me on my first visit and both he and his staff were very kind and put me on the path to finally getting cured. I could not be more thankful that I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Horowitz.
