ADMISSIONS: Central admission is required for even the simplest and safest procedure. Forms and questions seem not to vary by procedure. Some, but not all, relevant data is recalled from previous admissions. A subsidiary, Sugar Land Surgical Center, handles admission much better by allowing on-line registration. One glitch: the web site requires each applicant to agree to pay charge master prices. A phone call provides assurance this is not so where the patient's payor negotiates other prices. FACILITIES: Recent upgrades have provided new cardiac, maternity and admissions spaces. Lesser remodeling and equipment replacement are not always well-planned. Sometimes better-looking materials and more-functional equipment are replaced with worse. Involvement of all affected parties in planning upgrades might help.
