:) Click to report rating    12/3/09 4 4 4 I had surgery with Dr. Abel in May 2009. I was scared to death - he was rather casual about this and couldn't understand my anxiety - however, I could not fault his knowledge, his competency and his professionalism. I was discharged on day three from open heart surgery - I think this doctor is a 10.........I highly recommend him, and his staff.

:) Click to report rating    9/11/09 4 5 5 Dr. Abel operated on my mom in June 2009, both valve replacement and bypass. We don't have any complains. The surgery has been long and difficult and I think Dr. Abel's experience and knowledge saved my mom's life.

:(   *  7/27/09 3 2 2 Dr. Abel is a wonderful Dr., provided nothing goes wrong. If it does, his compassion, empathy, caring, all disappear. I believe that their are many unsatisfied families out there who lost a loved one under Dr. Abel. I believe that those families had no support from Dr. Abel. I believe those families will have found the care at St. Paul's to be poor. If you are one of these families and you wish to talk please contact me at triumphsolutions at yyahooooo. Com..... :) Click to report rating    7/20/09 5 4 5 Excellent results pre, post and during surgery. It is now 2 weeks after surgery and I am felling so well it's hard to believe I was ever on the operating table. Dr Able is more than competant and stands head and tails above my expectations for a personable, knowledgeable and friendly doctor who has given me a new lwase on life. 100 % pleased with every aspect of my surgery.

:( Click to report rating    7/9/09 3 2 1 Dr.Abel, It has been 7 months since my father passed away. It took 139 days for him to succumb from his bypass surgery you performed,. I haven't been back to work for over 10 months. You told us his risk factor was 1%, unfortunately you never mentioned that should he suffer complications he would be as good as dead. My mother suffers greatly, and didn't even realize she is now legally blind in one eye. If you are so compassionate, why did you never express any concerns or sorrow for our greatest loss. You avoided us in every way you could, quite cowardly I would say. We are so sad, so sorry, we believed you and the hospital. We think about dad constantly, we are so sad, it is unbearable. I am sure you don't think about him, or my family. Must be nice to be so removed from the humanity of medicine. The deceased are not just body for doctors to practice their craft on, they are incredibly important individuals. How can you sleep at night

:| Click to report rating    6/14/09 2 3 1 I think any Dr. Can be passionate, caring, etc, when the patients does well. But in the case of my father, who perished after 139 days, I can say with all honesty that Dr. James Abel, was anything but passionate, or caring. He avoided us, would not look at us, would turn and go the other way. This is not to say he is not a good Dr., but this is how we were treated. Further, I would like to share some comments made to my family by a very experienced ICU Dr. We were told, "bypass in 75-80 year old, the plumbing is fixed, but he suffered a predictable complication","it ain't unique to you guys","patients over 75 years, 60% suffer neurocognitive deficit when they come out(on pump)". He goes on to say, "this is the debate we have with our cardiac colleagues" and the clincher, "I can predict that this is going to happen" "the surgeons deny this". Dr. Abel, indicated my father's risk for complications was only 1%. Please, Dr. Abel be more careful with your numbers.

:) Click to report rating    6/12/09 5 5 5 Dr. Abel is a compassionate, sensitive and caring surgeon with a skill above average as a surgeon. His time spent with patients discussing surgery is lengthy and he goes out of his way to see patients and their families both preop and postop. Incidents such as infection post surgery or lengthier hospital stays after surgery are not predictable and depend on each patient's risk factors both before surgery and the unknown events of intraop problems resulting in a lengthier hospital stay. Dr. Abel's skill is top notch. His office support staff are equally knowledged and spent considerable time with patients in a professional and most compassionate sense. I rate Dr. Abel as above average.Comments about longer hospital stays is something that no human being, person or surgeon can predict after a patient's surgery and for every patient that does poorly after surgery there are hundreds even thousands that have done excellently. Dr. Abel and his team are the best!

:) Click to report rating    5/18/09 4 4 4 I wish I could contact the poster below, as my experience is strikingly similar. Firstly, I believe Dr. Abel is a competent and skillful surgeon - I have no reason to believe otherwise. My father also had cardiac surgery with Dr. Abel. The surgery by all accounts was successful, but dad had post-op complications the day after his surgery. He spent 50 days in ICU and passed away. I believe the problem may be more with the hospital environment.Dad developed sepsis after surgery which caused his organs to fail and he ended up in ICU.I have many concerns about his post-op care.So anyone going in to St. Paul's please ask questions - I'm not sure how you can ensure the best care in case of complications but this is just to let people know.I think Dr. Abel is a great surgeon, but something in the hospital environment is causing post-op complications - just my opinion can't prove it. I do have grave concerns about the ICU department but that must be shared in a different forum.

:| Click to report rating    5/13/09 4 4 2 Found Dr. Abel rather casual about cardiac surgery. He came in to see my father prior to surgery, very casual. Questioned my father about the 400 staples he saw in a XRAY for a hernia. Dad never had 400 staples, Dr.Abel had been studying wrong file. After interviewing my father, he assured us the surgery would be routine and Dad should be out in 5-9 days. On his way out of dads room he turns to us and says their is 1% risk factor. Wish that was correct, during the surgery dad sufferred from complications and after 130+ days in ICU my father passed away. After it became obvious that my father was in difficulty (about 2 days after the surgery) Dr. Abel would avoid us at all costs. I believe Dr. Abel to be a good Dr., that is if there are no complications. He abandonded my father and my family. There fore I would rate his empathy, and bedside manners extremely poorly.
