14/01/14 3 1 1 3 After waiting for 45 minutes past my daughters scheduled appointment, Dr. Alam came into room with no acknowledgement of the long wait. She became irritated when I told her that my daughter had not been using the prescribed creams as it had literally burned her face and made it bleed. Dr. Alam said "I told you that would happen!" When told my daughters skin had cleared up with the medication and soap prescribed, she would not accept that this was possible without the creams. I turned to ask her a question and Dr. Alam angrily held up her hand to stop me and said loudly "MOM let me finish!!" I was furious. Who does this woman think she is. She scribbled some notes and a prescription for more pills and creams and then said "now you can finish". To say she was arrogant is an understatement. I will never ever take my daughter to this doctor again. 45 minutes late and then we were hurried out in less than 5 minutes.

26/03/13 5 5 5 5 I went to see Dr Alam for what I thought was a changing mole. The staff were very polite and Dr Alam was ready to see me at the exact time of my appointment. She was very efficient, professional and with excellent bedside manners while taking a biopsy. I was especially impressed since I had read some of the negative reviews. My appointment was at the Bayview North location and I can only highly recommend Dr Alam. It is true that the actual appointment was very fast but it felt efficient, not rushed.

23/01/13 4 1 1 2 Dr. Alam, in my opinion, is just in the medical field for the almighty $. I went to her for a skin rash and on the first visit she did a biopsy and prescribed an antihistamine. When the biopsy came back and she wasn't able to come to a firm diagnosis, she decided to refer me to someone else. I asked for copies of the biopsies - she wanted $25. When I asked for a refill on the antihistamine, she said she would renew it, but it would cost me $25?! She rushes through things and when you try and slow her down to understand what she is saying, or, heaven forbid, ask her a question, she tells you to wait a minute, writes in her notes, then asks if there is anything else she can help you with. But, when you ask another question she never gives a straight answer. Her wait times are absolutely horrendous, another indication that she is $ hungry as she obviously overbooks. Very negative experience, glad I am going to see someone else and shouldn't have to deal with her again!!  Respond

31/08/12 3 1 1 1 I have never seen a doctor's office that has functioned so ineffectually, ever. Wait times for booked appointments can be hours. Beyond reasonable. Dr Alam triple books appointments and therefore does not have time to spend with each patient to answer questions one might have. I finally gave up and had my family doctor refer me to a new dermatologist in Newmarket. My new dermatologist was appalled when I showed him the medications that had been prescribed for my Lupus. Not only was it the wrong one, but I had been using it for well over two years. He told me the topical steroids had done more harm than good. I am so angered at the whole situation that I am going to follow up with a letter to the College of Physician's and Surgeons. In my opinion.... A disgrace.  See Responses

26/07/12 5 1 5 5 Very quick and skillful. If you have specific questions, she takes the time to answer fully but vagueness tries her patience. Even has a sense of humour if you look for it. Her talent is worth the ridiculous wait times. Another Barrie Dermatologist has retired and this has only added to her caseload.  Respond

19/02/12 2 2 1 1 mosts abrupt and unpleasant , felt she was gouging the system asking for biopsies that were not needed. Diagnosed a cancer spot and then never followed through with an appointment for surgery. A terrible experience. Never again.  See Responses

25/10/11 3 1 1 2 I had a horrible experience with Dr. ALam. I left her office in tears and went to the Emerg at RVH to get the answers she wouldnt provide. She refused to discuss a condition (which she said I have) unless I got a seperate referral. She was rude, abrupt and made me feel awful. When I went to Emerg they couldnt believe how she had treated me. She has left me scared with no answers. I will NEVER see her again.  Respond

11/10/11 5 1 2 4 Dr Alam may indeed be good at detecting and treating but she is all about the money. She make several appointments which take only 2-3 minutes which in my case could have simply been handled in 1 appointment. She does not care we patients have jobs and can not sit in her waiting room for a min 2 hours each time either when she is more concerned to bill ohip for extra unnecessary ones. I have skin cancer and she gave me a 10 refill px for chemo cream which I stupidly misplaced. i called and offered to pay the 25 fee for a replacent px but was at that time told to not worry about the fee and she sent what i beleived to be a replacement to my pharmacy. I began my treatment and on a friday morning ran out and needed another refill( you cant just stop uising this stuff mid stream of treatment) anyway, pharmacy informs me the px she gave them was for just 1, not 10 , she made me drive 1 hr on a frdy night to pay 25 before renewing it or suggeted emerg at hospital. No care for her patients.

18/04/11 5 4 5 5 I found Dr. Alam very intelligent and helpful. She knows all the right questions to ask to provide you with the best care possible, as efficiently as possible. Although the waiting time is long, it is definately worth it as she is one of the few caring doctors out there today. Definately recommend her!  Respond

29/03/11 5 3 5 5 I had my first appointment today and found she had an excellent bed side manner and explained everything in a language I could understand. I have to go back for a biopsy on Thursday but whatever the outcome I feel she will give me the best care. Her receptionist is also very nice and very friendly even though she was very busy. I was treated with respect and kindness.  Respond

21/11/10 4 1 3 4 Brusque manner made me uncomfortable to ask questions. My last question was as she walked out the door. I waited 1 1/2 hours to spend 5 mins with her! One more visit for a biopsy, and I hope that is the last. Not a pleasant experience overall, especially when my family doctor is the exact opposite!  Respond

15/11/10 3 1 1 2 Dr. Alam is rarely on time. She even has a sign posted now telling you not to ask staff how long the wait will be, and that it is normal to wait more than an hour. I usually wait between 90 minutes to 3 hours once. I have to see her on an ongoing basis and it is by far the worst experience I have with our medical system. Her staff are pleasant to deal with.  Respond

27/08/10 4 3 4 4 Very helpful and pleasant enough but I agree with those that say it is difficult to elaborate on answers to her rapidly fired questions. She got me in the next week for a biopsy, perhaps because my rash was extensive and severely itchy, or maybe because she knew I work for another doctor in the area. Overall, I was satisfied. I work in the system, so always go to an appt with any specialist expecting a long wait, and can therefore only be pleasantly surprised if it is not the case.  Respond

26/08/10 4 3 5 5 I agree with most that Dr.Alam's proverbial "bedside manner" is a bit to be desired but I do have to say that she is right to the business at hand. She asks questions quickly and does not always give you time to respond in full but I found that when I asked her to let me complete my answer, she apologized and did. She took a biopsy of an unknown rash, the results came back but she was not satisfied with them, nor was I, as we both are certain that it is something else so she has refered me to another Dermatologist in Toronto at SunnyBrook to look into it further. So although there are things that she could work on a little I found her to be efficient, helpful & concerned that I be diagnosed correctly.  Respond

18/08/10 4 2 1 1 Reading previous comments I don't know how anyone can say that Dr. Alam was in any way pleasant. I have never been more dissatisfied by a doctor experience in my life and I have been to many incompetent doctors. All I wanted to do leaving her office was break down and cry. I have had psoriasis since I was 13 (25 now) and only with in the last month flared up to the extreme, I am covered head to toe with psoriasis and having a really hard time dealing with it. She clearly did not care. She did not allow me to ask a single question. She constantly told me to "let her finish" each time I attempted a question. Every time She asked me a question she would interrupt my reply with another question - answers which were already filled out on the form might i add. And I agree, the waiting room was awful, though the staff for me were quite pleasant. I am going to come back for the light therapy, though only until I can be referred to a doctor out of town.  Respond

06/07/10 5 5 5 5 I was referred to Dr Alam by a Barrie oncologist at RVH. She diagnosed my issue immediately, correctly and prescribed a treatment. Within 2 months, the issue was resolved! My wait times were most reasonable and her mannerisms are first class. I'm impressed.  Respond

02/03/10 3 4 4 4 I just got back from an appt. with Dr. Alam. She was very very helpful, and very knowledgeable. She was very quick and effective in asking the right questions to get the right information. She is a no bull doctor and is straight to the point with everything. She wants to get you in and out quickly so there is less of a burden on your daily life. All in all she was great, knew her stuff and would definitely recommend her.  Respond

18/02/10 2 1 1 3 The doctor was inept at dealing with children. She spoke with medical terms and would not elaborate on the meanings. Whenever questions were asked of her she would turn and write on her notepad and ask you to wait. When she was done writing she asked if there was anything else she could help with before she left. She appeared to be rushing throught the appointment and told us plainly that she wouldn't be able to do anything in the office due to the age of our child. I would not recommend her for anyone with young children.  Respond

03/02/10 1 1 1 1 Too crowded, too long for an appointment to only see the doctor for 2 minutes. Those signs in the office not to speak rudely to the staff yet the receptionist was rude along with the doctor. Office was dirty and so was the examing room. Staff and doctor dressed in cords and jeans. In the two minutes she was with me she said the words the treatment would be too expensive for you 3 or 4 times. Barrie is a big enough city why can't we get a Doctor of Dermatology who can help.  Respond

04/01/10 1 1 1 4 Dr. Alam is probably the most uncaring and disrespectful doctor I have encountered. She is obviously in medicine for the wrong reasons. She overbooks patients showing no regard for their time or circumstances. She brings you back for multiple appointments which could all be dealt with quickly in one or two appointments. She is gouging our health system and I will never sit for 2-3 hours again in her office.  Respond

07/12/09 5 3 5 5 I think she is very caring. Not a handholder but efficient and smart. She is a bottom line kinda gal & Ilike her alot. The staff are way too busy but alwyas smiling & handle the busyness like Grace Kelly. I am grateful for a femal MD within an hrs drive.  Respond

09/11/09 3 1 5 5 I took an 84 year old lady to Dr Alam for a diagnosis on a mole that was changing. She was very busy but kind to my friend. Tremendous knowledge with a quick delivery we are having a biopsy done there this am very fast for Barrie only 2 dermatologists. The wait is worth it she is very efficient. If I want kindess I will go to church, I wanted medical help for my friend and we got the best. We are glad we found her. Their office is too small and the staff overworked. They are to my knowledge the only two dermatologists in Barrie. Your health is worth more then getting back to work take the time and relax we have 2 of the best dermatologist although they both have lost thier people skills under the pressure that they work under everyday not to mention the surjury they do also. Give them a break and treat them with respect we could lose them and then have to sit in traffic to get to a dermatologist in Toronto with a longer waiting list. We are very spoiled in Canada.  Respond

13/05/09 1 1 1 1 As a health professional, quite aware of the challenges in our healthcare system, I understand the shortage of doctors in our communities. This is particularily true for specialists in smaller communities. This makes it quite difficult to choose a doctor of our own, which is the only reason I continue to take my daughter to see Dr. Alam. Dr. Alam has no bedside manner to speak of, in fact she quite often assesses my daughter while taking notes with her back to her. How you can effectively make an assessment, never mind a positive connection with a client, with your back to them I have absolutely no idea. She is quite often rude, a fact that even my 15 year old daughter recognizes as unprofessional and inappropriate. She fails to provide complete information, even when asked direct questions. Medical specialists provide a service that they are paid quite well to deliver, it is unfortunate that the level of service is not consistant with the amount of renumeration. 2 thumbs down!  Respond

05/05/09 2 1 2 4 I have seen Dr. Alam on more than one occasion and have found her to be very unpleasant every time. She may be very busy, but her approach can seem very intimidating and rather humiliating. I have two issues that I see her about- both uncomplicated yet related and still I am required to book a separate appointment for each issue- just to ask one question. I feel this is not only a waste of both doctor and patient's time but also a waste of health dollars. Once I am able to secure another dermatologist, I will no longer continue to see Dr. Alam.  Respond

26/02/09 2 3 4 5 She was very pleasant to me, but she is extremely busy and does not have alot of time. Have your questions and concerns ready as there is not alot of time for appointments. I didn't like that she asks you to undress without leaving the room and then just stand there while she examines you. But after you've had children, that's really no big deal. She did diagnose e correctly and left untreated my condition was only one phase away from cancer. I am very thankful. Her reception staff however are not the most professional people, they think nothing of talking to each other about personal business while patients are waiting to be served, but then again, they're young and probably don't care.  Respond

20/02/09 4 3 1 2 My family and I had to see Dr. Alam yesterday for a unknown skin condition. It was myself, my finance and our 3 month old son with the same condition. We found this Doctor to be very unpleasant to deal with. It was very difficult to ask her questions with her biting your head off every time. We found that we were a lot more patient with her then she was with us, and we are the patients. The questions we asked her seemed to annoy her and her responses were to vague for us to get any information out of them. She was found to be very unhelpful. Example; when asked how to properly clean our furniture to prevent a relapse of our condition, she said, "you have to clean", and repeated the same sentence which was pointless when it didn't provide any help to begin with. Dr. Alam wants a follow up in a month and we decided we will not be seeing her again.  Respond

05/01/09 2 1 1 2 Tremendous demand for dermatologists in Barrie means a long wait (avg. 1.5 hrs after scheduled appt). I waited a month for an appointment, another month for a biopsy appointment, and it will take another month for the results. I've found Dr. Alam, to be nice but impatient and somewhat unhelpful. It would be worth driving to newmarket for another referral as you will have to wait a long time past your scheduled appt.  Respond

21/09/08 3 3 4 4 I found this doctor very helpful. Her manner is rather brusk but judging by the large number of people waiting, I believe she is extremely busy so perhaps she can't spend any more time than is absolutely necessary with a patient. She is very good about follow-up visits.  Respond
