:) Click to report rating *  3/18/10 3 3 5 It's very sad to see so many people rate Dr. Porter on her appearance. It seems like everyone with negative reviews just didn't like how she looked and likely embellished details.I find her authentic appearance and honest energy refreshing. Yes, the reception staff are young and imperfect (although improving all the time, the more I get to know them and vice versa) and the wait times can be long - but I haven't had a Dr. in the past 15 years whose wait times aren't long. Don't blame the Dr's for the failing system. Dr. Porter has been nothing but caring, compassionate, professional and exceptional at getting me specialist care whenever my problems exceed her knowledge base. Like any Dr. she has a lot of patients and sometimes she has to rush through more than others. But when you really need extra care, she is *always* there. I feel grateful every day that I am lucky to have her as a Dr. I recommend her 100% to anyone. It's a privilege to have her as a doctor.

:( Click to report rating *  11/10/09 1 3 1 I was not at all impressed with this doctor. I don't really care about appearances, but in this case, coupled with the worst attitude I have ever seen in a doctor, her disheveled appearance seemed somewhat appropriate. I went in at 36 weeks pregnant, with a persistent cough. Bear in mind this is at the height of the swine flu madness where at every turn one has to hear how pregnant women are considered high risk for complications. I told her that my daughter had pneumonia and that I was afraid that I might have it as well. She agreed to listen to my lungs by placing the stethoscope OVER TOP of three layers of clothes. After a half hearted listen, she impatiently proclaimed: "you don't have pneumonia", like I was completely out of line for being concerned. Feeling emotional (hormones!) and sick, I was crying a bit. Annoyed, she barked "what's wrong?" This woman does not give a sh**t. It is scary and beyond unprofessional. When I told my OB how she listened to my lungs, she was appalled.

:) Click to report rating *  9/24/09 3 3 5 I just found out about this site and i'm shocked at how much value ppl put on appearance.I love dr porters appearance and her attitude. i recently had cancer and she has cared for me through the whole ordeal.she even told me that i could come in to her office anytime i wanted even if i just wanted to come in and cry. she has looked after me better than any doctor i have ever had. i used to be petrified of doctors until i met her. shes down to earth, patient, funny, kind and very very caring. i think she rocks.

:) Click to report rating *  7/10/09 4 4 5 Dr. Kathryn POrter has been my GP for quite sometime now. It was a weird start at first because I find her robotic and very cold. However, in due time I was privileged enough to see her human side. Not many doctors can reveal that side of them. The saying "don't judge a book by its cover" applies to Dr. Porter. If you are looking for a Dr. who is direct, professional, and knowledgeable then I highly recommend Dr. Porter. When I see her I always leave with the feeling that if she doesn't have an answer to my symptoms right away she will do her best to help find the cause of my discomfort. Keep in mind, she's a doctor not a friend, and if rushing me means getting to the bottom of things then so be it. I have to remind myself that there are 20 other patients waiting to be seen and heard. Dr. Porter is forthright, professional, and knowledgeable. She does what she can for what little time she may have with each of her patients.

:( Click to report rating *  5/24/09 3 1 2 Very unprofessional with her attire, body piercing, smoking in between appts, never on time so when you finally get to see her she rushes you out and doesn't spend quality time; would never recommend her; was passed on to me when my dr. stopped practicing

:( Click to report rating *  4/20/09 1 1 1 Dr. Porter's attitude as a doctor is very inappropriate to me. As soon as I saw her as a walk-in, she said "do you have an appointment? If you don't, you cannot ask me multiple questions." I tried to summarize my issues, but she sounded rushing me. She also tried to leave the room before I finished my questions. I tried to stop her, but she said "No, you cannot ask me any other questions. If you want, make an appointment." I got so sad and disappointed. As a doctor, she is not helpful at all for me other than prescribing medications. She treated me as if a creature who does not have any emotions. She is NOT empathetic, caring, and sincere at all. I have been seen her almost a year, but she has never spent significant time with me. Never. Always rushing me and not listening to what I need.

:( Click to report rating *  4/9/09 3 3 2 Her dress seems irrelevant to me; but her skills as a family doctor aren't. She is poor at treating patients-uninterested in eliciting what the problem is, and uninterested in physical exams. She orders tests and doesn't read the results; she does no follow up. She seems harried and distracted; I don't think she is cold or mean spirited in anyway, but perhaps uninterested in medicine except as a kind of mechanical practice.

:) Click to report rating *  1/11/09 4 3 5 I'm not a fan of the clinic she works at, especially the MOAs. They could learn a thing or two about customer service. However, Dr Porter has given me wonderful care. She knows me, my file, and is on top of my health issues. I drive in from Surrey to see her on a regular basis. Looks can be deceiving. I don't care how my doctor dresses, nor do I want her to be my best friend. I do care about the quality of medical attention I receive. Hers is of the highest quality.

:) Click to report rating *  1/4/09 3 3 5 I have found Dr. Porter to be excellent. I like the way she dresses and I like her presentation (and I'm over 65). She knows who I am and has been consistently good in getting me appointments with specialists. It is not her fault that the system in BC is broken.

:) Click to report rating *  10/30/08 4 3 5 I was tired of dealing with my old doctor in Richmond who's methods and practice were not appealing for a modern, young woman like myself. I am so happy to have found Dr. Kathryn Porter. I have seen her 3 times so far, 2 for prescription renewals/minor issues and 1 full physical. I finally feel like I have a doctor who understands my concerns and is looking out for my overall health. I was happily surprised when she ordered some routine tests done as a part of the physical exam process. I have never had a doctor do that before. Yes, the wait times are long but this is a problem across the entire system. I LOVE that she dresses the way she wants and I don't think anyone has the right to judge her because of it. I am very satisfied with the professional, caring manner in which she conducts herself.

:) Click to report rating *  9/28/08 5 5 5 Most of the people commenting on Dr. KP are actually complaining about the clinic. She has NO control over wait times. I've been privileged to have been her patient, from time to time, since 1999 and full time now. Not only does she spend compassionate time with her patients she also has a wonderful grasp of medicine. With that knowledge she communicates in the best way possible. I'd jump over a 100 Marcus Welbys to get to Doctor Porter Shame on you people who don't have a grip on our current medical situation and keep voting for the right-wing political parties like Gordo's. Get a grip and set things right with your vote

:) Click to report rating    7/21/08 5 2 5 I would be very unhappy if Dr. Porter was to leave, move or not be my doctor anymore. Despite initial judgements, she has turned out to be the best doctor I've had, always taking care of issues professionally and with a great deal of compassion, helpfulness and thoroughness. She is personable and very nice and refers you to great specialists quickly when needed. She is also very caring and I love that she dresses how she feels most comfortable - to me it makes her more relatable than another white coat.

:) Click to report rating    7/15/08 5 5 3 Kathryn Porter has one major problem. She needs to come into the examining room for her consultation, with the knowledge of the patient that she is about to see. (They have the charts before-hand). She needs to learn about eye contact, and she must not rush her patients through. This is especially disconcerting, when she suddenly stands up, effectively declaring that the consultation is over. I was somewhat surprised, that a young woman doc would adopt the "male" doctor personification. MSP billings aside, she needs to sit back and really evaluate what kind of woman GP she wants to be. We don't expect them to be wimpy, nor do we want that. Just listen. You will learn from listening to your patients. You are so rushed, that the consultation becomes a comedy of errors. Prescription writing is a last minute scribble. She can do better, and I think with time, she will. Don't hold her hostage to her preferred atire. She is a young woman, and why should anyone care how she looks or dress?

:( Click to report rating    7/10/08 1 1 1 Dr.Porter lacks punctuality and manners. Her appearance is completely unprofessional as she has an eyebrow and nose piercing, tattoos, and wears flip flops. She greeted me harshly by not smiling and introducing herself when she walked into the examination room. Dr.Porter appeared annoyed and judgemental when I asked her questions regarding my health. She told me to consult a phamacist for answers to my questions(since she probably didn't know herself). Dr.Porter does not deserve to be in the medical profession as she is only in it for the $$.

:( Click to report rating    7/2/08 1 1 1 I went to the walk in clinic where she works as my family doctor was on holidays and didn't have a locum so I had to go to a walk in. First, I was told by reception staff that the wait would be about half an hour - it was nearly two hours. Then - I explained my problem and she diagnosed it without examining me. She then wrote a prescription practically threw it at me and started to walk out of the room without another word. I had questions, which she barely answered while standing in the doorway obviously impatient to leave. I filled the prescription, and when I went home, I looked it up -and the illness she had diagnosed - she had given me a treatment that has been proven to be ineffective. I had to go to another clinic the next day to get something that would actually work. I was also shocked at how unprofessionally she was dressed - unkempt hair, a sweatshirt and rubber gum boots. She looked like someone who should be mucking a horse stall, not treating people medically.

:) Click to report rating    6/20/08 2 3 4 After reading so many negetive reviews about Dr. Porter's outer appearance & personality, I felt obliged to post a review. The wait at times at this clinic is unacceptable, but that is due to the support staff, management and ownders of the clinic as they provide a service to the Doctors there. I am appalled that so many reviewers have rated Dr. Porter's ability to diagnose based on her appearance. Do all doctors have to be dressed in cookie cutter attires? Does her clothes affect the way she diagnoses? I am really happy that she chooses to dress as she pleases. A comfortable doctor is one who can spend their attention on their patients. She is not one of those outwardly nurturing doctors. I think though she cares deeply for my well being. I do not need someone to make small talk & hold my hand. I need a doctor who is able to tell me what is wrong and how to fix it. And she is very good at that.

:) Click to report rating    5/27/08 3 3 5 I was uncertain the first time I visited Dr. Porter, however she has proven to be a great doctor. In the year and a half that I have been her patient she has helped me deal with a number of issues knowledgably, with care and compassion and has made me feel totally comfortable with her abilities.

:( Click to report rating    5/24/08 1 1 1 I went to see Dr.Porter regarding my high blood pressure and asthma, she told me she would only deal with one issue. I told her I made an appointment specifically so I could see her about 2 issues. She then prescribed 2 medications to me on the same prescription page that should never have been prescribed together. They worked totally against each other and I ended up in the hospital with near respitory failure and heart attack. The doctor in the hospital was very interested in knowing the name of the doctor who did this to me. I would avoid this doctor even if my life depended on it.

:) Click to report rating    2/16/08 5 3 5 Hi,I don't agree with any of these negative comments. I've had a few doctors in my time (I'm 52 years old) and none have come close to wonderful Dr. Porter. She's kind, she listens, she's very knowledgable and she has a sense of humour. She's also thoughful and very understanding and has solved some pretty complicated problems for me. I referred a very picky woman from my workplace to Dr. Porter - and now this colleague can't say enough good things about her. The wait times aren't Dr. Porter's fault! (If you want really bad doctors go to the Kits Walk-in clinic!)

:) Click to report rating    2/11/08 1 2 4 The difficulty with wait-times is an issue that concerns the staff working at reception. Unlike other GP offices, they fail to enquire the reason for the patient's visit when they call to book an appt. How can you possibly anticipate the length of the appt without doing this? Hence, scheduling conflicts are a direct result of the Medical Clinic's policies. Perhaps they should revisit their hiring policy and employment package; they might attract more mature and competent staff by offering a real living wage and a good benefit plan. It looks like they might be keeping costs down by hiring young part-time staff. That aside, this doctor is very knowledgeable. She immediately identified a condition that 2 previous doctors were not able to diagnose. I find her approach casual but professional; she's not overly obtrusive but asks the right questions and offers suggestions without forcing opinions down my throat. However, because of the long wait-times I dread booking appts.

:| Click to report rating    12/20/07 2 1 2 What a relief to read all the other coomplaints about Dr. K. Porter - I agree with all of them. Cold, always late by 15min to an hour(she never apologizes for this), rushed and very poor bedside manners.

:( Click to report rating *  12/14/07 1 1 1 I was happy with Dr. Porter for the first year I was with her. Then she moved from her office to a clinic. Her attitude and service dropped DRAMATICALLY after that. I feel bad that I ever recommended her to anyone! Rude and uncaring, dangerously so!

:( Click to report rating    12/14/07 2 1 1 Dismissive to the point of being rude. Very seldom on time. Need to argue in order to receive care. Unwilling or unable to listen to the needs of the patient.

:( Click to report rating    12/6/07 1 1 1 I came there hoping to get some answeres about some red bumps on my arm. she barely glanced at my arm before she told me to put my "investigating cap on and find out" If I was going to diagnose myslef I wouldnt wait in line to see a DOCTOR!! That being said, I will never book an appointment with her again!

:) Click to report rating    11/27/07 5 5 5 Our family doctor of 30 years retired quite unexpectedly and our medical files were transferred to the Dr. Porter's. My husband and I have been going to Dr. Porter for a few months. We find Dr. Porter caring, courteous, knowledgeable, competent, and professional. At first the wait time was long because of the volume of new patients the clinic was receiving. However, after a couple of visits, the wait time was never more than 10-15 min. We are pleased and fortunate to have Dr. Porter as our doctor.

:( Click to report rating    11/12/07 4 3 1 When my wonderful doctor left the clinic to open a preventative-based practise, I became a patient of Doctor Porter. After leaving me in the examining room for half an hour while she completed paperwork because she "thought" my appointment was half an hour later than it in fact was, she dared to tell me that I, at age 21, had slightly elevated blood pressure and should make another appointment. She clearly had no concept of the inconvenience she had caused, making me late for work, because if she had, she would have been well aware that my irritation had elevated my blood pressure. Furthermore, after keeping me waiting because of her own confusion, she, apparently unaware of the distinction between two types of medication, prescribed the wrong one. If I could avoid it, I would never see her again.

:) Click to report rating    11/6/07 4 3 5 I'm actually quite surprised by all the negative feedback posted here on Dr. Porter! I've had quite the opposite experience and felt immediately at ease in Dr Porters presence. Her examinations are precise and thorough and she goes out of her way to make me feel comfortable. Yes the wait times are extraordinarly long but, I feel that this is not Dr. Porters fault, but the clinics'.

:( Click to report rating    11/6/07 4 3 1 Dr. Porter seemed as though she wasn't interested in helping me. She completely missed the root of my problem which has since been diagnosed and treated by other professionals. I would not recommend Dr. Porter.

:( Click to report rating    10/31/07 1 1 1 I was sent to Dr. Porter after my doctor retired. All the previous comments are bang on--Dr. Porter presents as uncaring, aloof and unprofessional. I have met several family doctors who are also overburdened by the medical/clinical systems, yet they still manage to have some bedside manner. Luckily, I have found a gem of a doctor who also is over worked, yet remains cheerful and personable(and remembers my name).Dr. Porter, please do your patients a favour and seek therapy to uncover why you truly don't appear to care.

:( Click to report rating    10/16/07 1 2 1 A few bad experiences had with Dr Porter: on two occasions she completed prescriptions for me (once for the wrong dosage which I had to ask her to correct) and once for the wrong birth control pill (which I missed unfortunately until I was already at the Pharmacy). On two other occasions, she prescribed anti-biotics for my infant daughter based on diagnosis of 'bacterial infection'. The first time, she said it was because my daughter probably had a bladder infection so she wanted to prescribe the antibiotics without even doing a urine test. After pushing her for a urine test (which turned out negative), I realized the antibiotics were not required. The second occasion, she said my daughter likely had a (bacterial)sinus infection and needed antibiotics. Within 2 hours of seeing her, I rushed my daughter to emergency with breathing problems and it turned out she has croup (viral infection) and antibiotics again were completely unnecessary. I will never be going back to Dr. Porter.

:( Click to report rating    9/5/07 2 1 1 I went to Dr. Porter after my previous wonderful doctor closed her business. To say the least, I was not impressed by Dr. Porter! After waiting in the waiting room for an excessive time (as unfortunately is always the appalling case at this clinic!), a woman came to escort me to the examining room, closed the door & left. A few minutes later, the same woman came in with my file. I didn't know who she was & asked if SHE was Dr. Porter (she was). So, why didn't she introduce herself to me when she took me into the examining room? She was quite unfriendly, uncaring & rushed me through! Her behavior lacked friendliness and professionalism, resulting in me feeling absolutely no confidence or respect for her as a doctor. I have since found another doctor who is fabulous!

:| Click to report rating    9/2/07 1 1 2 I have seen Dr. Porter about 4 times. Each time she was brusque and totally uncaring. For my complete medical (done in 10 minutes) she walked in and without even an "hello" asked if I needed any prescriptions. I honestly don't think she remembered my name, even on the fourth visit. Also I doubt very much if she had even read my chart as she asked the same questions each visit. I didn't realize how bad she was until I had to attend a specualist clinic where everyone smiled and said "hello" and actually called me by name. I don't think Dr. Porter sees her patiets as human beings but rather as objects on a production line. I'm actively looking for another doctor.

:( Click to report rating    7/10/07 4 1 1 I don't mean to add more criticism however, this doctor gave me the feeling that she didn't want to be my doctor at all. I felt she played a subtle game by rushing me through the preliminary questions and then shoving me off a.s.a.p. to make another appointment. I had some very daunting and private health concerns that I instantly kept to myself because her attitude seemed somewhat judgemental. Upon the second visit for a pap, I came all the way out there to be told "We don't do paps on Saturdays". I've heard that before 10 years ago at a clinic in Windsor. When I saw a REAL gynecologist he said "Maybe he shouldn't be practicing medicine on Saturdays either." That's how I feel about this Doctor or any other who set up some bullsh*t rule like that (Hmmm, could it be the government?). At any rate, my complaint is her lousy and impersonal attitude but I can understand that maybe health care here isn't run as smoothly as its reputation abroad presents.

:| Click to report rating    6/21/07 2 3 Dr. Porter took over my physician's practise and she had enormous shoes to fill - sorry Dr. Porter you didn't even come close. I agree with the comments below - the wait times are not acceptable, clinic staff are rude and my experience was that she did seem to treat each visit as if you were a new patient - does she even read the file before coming in the room? I do however appreciate Dr. Porter's comments below and believe if she were working in a different setting she may have more positive comments on this site.

:) Click to report rating    6/16/07 3 4 I really like Dr. Porter... Although rushed, she is thorough and friendly. What family practice doctor isn't rushed, especially in a clinic that pumps patients through like Carestation?

:) Click to report rating    5/28/07 3 4 On my first visit when looking for a new doctor I came to Dr. Porter, I did feel a bit rushed, waited a long time and wasn't sure due mostly to the wait time, however, I have had to go back several times to see Dr. Porter and I think it is very fair to say that she is very comfortable after a couple of visits to be around, very thorough, makes good decisions, cares how I feel and very knowledgeable and non judgemental and a nice person. I rather like the "unclinical" appearance she presents. In the past my doctor's have not been as thorough as her in some areas and she quite impressed me with that. Due to the clinics challenges and the first meeting of feeling rushed I was contemplating looking again, but I gave it some more time and really feel I was wrong in my first assesment and will stay with Dr. Porter as I think she is really good. Poor Doctors deal with alot of stress and trying to please lots of people. We need time to talk, yes, but they need improved working conditions.

:( Click to report rating    5/10/07 1 1 Response to Dr. Porter: Almost all of the comments from your patients is about your bedside manner and the long wait times (and your attire and smoking habits are unacceptable). I have seen you once when my GP was not avaialble. I will never see you again. My GP is at the same clinic NEVER makes her patients wait up to or more than 1 hr past their appt time. The LONGEST I have waited past my appt time in the 2 yrs I have been going to see her is 30 mins. I strongly suggest you take these comments to heart and reassess the manner you treat your patients.

:) Click to report rating    5/8/07 2 4 In all fairness to Dr. Porter, the waiting time is not really her fault. The clinic has lost 2 doctors and the support staff seem to be very disorganized and experiencing difficulty dealing with the overload. I waited for 1 1/2 hrs. the first visit, but only 1/2 hr. the second time. I felt the first appt. was rushed, but obviously there was a tremendous backlog. I have seen Dr. Porter twice and she has been very supportive and helpful both times. Unusual apparel doesn't bother me; in fact, I see that as evidence of someone who can "think outside the box", not a bad thing in the medical profession. The cigarette smoking in a concern, though; your Dr. should set an example with good health habits and smoking is so not one of them.

:) Click to report rating    5/5/07 2 5 This is Dr. Kathryn Porter. An ex-patient of mine sent me the link to this website. To say the least I am very concerned. I do wish to apologize to those patients to whom I seemed uncaring. That is not at all the case. I also apologize for the long wait times. All I wish to say, is that I am doing my utmost to manage the important and often multiple demands of my patients in a very busy family practice setting while working within a system of family medicine that is overburdened and understaffed. I wish to let all my patients know that I endeavour to provide the best care while attempting to meet the demands of many patients in a system where family doctors are is short supply. My motive is not financially motivated. If it were, I would not be in family medicine. Again I wish to apologize to those patients in which I seemed uncaring or distant. That couldn't be farther from the truth of my purpose in family medicine.

:( Click to report rating    4/26/07 1 1 I waited 2 hours for my last scheduled appointment for my monthly shot. While she was giving me the needle (which took all of 2 min) I told her I fainted twice the day before and was quite concerned... She told me to make another appointment??? I was so upset I told a friend who referred me to this site. I'm so thankful, before reading the other comments I thought maybe I was just too sensitive... Now I realize I was right, she doesn't seem to care, just wants to see as many people as possible, to make more $$$. After having the same type of treatment for over a year, I won't be giving her anymore chances & won't be going back. Thank you :-)

:( Click to report rating    4/17/07 4 1 I am looking for a local Vancouver Dr to switch to from my Richmond one and within the 1st 2 mins I wanted to flee her office. Abrubt, uncaring and everything everyone else is saying on here. She has ZERO bedside manner and couldn't get me out of there fast enough. I don't judge on appearance either but she was not at all professional.

:( Click to report rating    4/13/07 1 1 Aaaaaah - so BAD. I know this shouldn't really be relevant but she dresses terribly for the job (blue hair, nose piercings, black nails.. etc) and stinks of cigarette smoke. To me that's off putting when she's dealing with my health. I'm all for individuality but in some cases, being professional really matters. She also rushes you out of the door asap and shows no concern for your health issue.

:| Click to report rating    4/13/07 1 2 I had this doctor once she took over my retired doctor's practice.I found her to treat you as a complete stranger even though she had seen you on a regular basis (like a WCB claim or light duties) where your employer makes you go often to get repetitive, stupid forms filled out all the time. Also everytime she walked she asked "What can I do for you today?" like it was some kind of fastfood lineup and you're next.Bedside manner? What bedside manner.I also hadn't seen her for quite sometime so I decided to look for another doctor that was closer to home.Well the new doctor needed my medical files so I authorized him to request them and the next thing I know I get a bill for my files from Dr. Porter's office.Hadn't seen me in years but still wants her pound of flesh.Bloody ridiculous.

:( Click to report rating    4/5/07 1 1 Had to use this Doc. as a stand in and will never use her again. First time I ever had a Doc. that did not show any interest in her patient. She played with her nails the whole time and had no eye contact at all.

:| Click to report rating    4/2/07 2 2 I agree with all the other comments about Dr. Porter. I saw her for the first time on Mar. 30/07 and felt like I was wasting her time. Introduced herself as she walked into the room but no look in the eye, no handshake .... strictly business. I felt as if she couldn't wait to get out of there. She was up and almost out the door when I reminded her that we one other issue to discuss. Then, she was out the door faster than the speed of light. Will not be going back to her!!

:( Click to report rating    3/31/07 1 1 She was my teen's doctor for about 7 months. Each appt (after one hour wait) she introduced herself like she had never seen her before. No bedside manner. I feel like she is running from patient to patient to pay off her student loan. We found another Doctor.

:( Click to report rating    3/21/07 3 2 I had just retained her as my new doctor, when she disappeared. No letter, no phone call. When you tried to call her office, no forwarding message, nothing. Two years later she reappears magically at a walk in clinic, which is like a conveyor belt type place. You get the feeling you have one question, then NEXT!

:) Click to report rating    3/14/07 1 3 An appointment booked for 1pm you wont acctually see her until 3pm. Only one apt I waited under 30min. She has been my family doctor for over 2 years now. Her knowledge is quite good, however she rushes you out of the room to get to the next patient whos been waiting for over an hour.

:( Click to report rating    3/13/07 1 1 This doc likes to get you out of her clinic asap and does not have a caring nature.
