I have gone to Dr. Aleskow for the past several years and have been extremely satisfied. He was recommened by a prior "Top Doctor" internist whom I left when I switched jobs several years ago and had a new health plan. The prior doctor looked at my new list and told me I didn't need to go past the A's, given, as he said, that "Elliot Aleskow is one of the finest doctors in this city." That has certainly been my experience. Quirky perhaps, and yes, there can sometimes be longer than desired waits. But he's smart, thorough, and straightforward, and he is truly engaged in keeping me healthy.

Social Security sent me to him for an evaluation of my claim. The young woman who took my history did not introduce herself so i know neither her name nor her position. The interview was difficult, as i have a dissociative disorder and could not answer (did not know) many of her questions about when i was diagnosed, etc. She performed some basic tests -- vision, height/weight, and had me walk a straight line as in a sobriety test. This took most of an hour. Then she told me to undress completely except for my underpants and put on their paper gown. The doctor came in and took my blood pressure & pulse and used a stethoscope. Then he asked if he could examine my stomach and had me lie down on my back. He pulled the gown down -- exposing me completely! Totally unnecessary and inconsiderate. He did not spend any time on my primary complaint (neuropathy in my feet). Total time with him was maybe 15 minutes. I feel disrespected & unheard and plan to inform Social Security.

Dr. Aleskow seemed quite competant, but I waited over an hour to be seen. I was having bloodwork done that required me to fast, and was feeling shaky enough as it was by the time my 12:45 appointment rolled around (and I did show up early and had all my paperwork turned in before 12:45), but they didn't take my blood sample until a few minutes past 2pm. I ended up fainting afterwards - really not fun. This is after having told the staff that I'd been fasting and was light-headed. Additionally, this was a workday and I certainly could not spare the 3 hours it took me in total. The staff were so-so except for the nurse/assistant who took my blood sample; she was excellent. Finally, this is not the biggest issue as I understand he's being thorough, but Aleskow ordered a test that I'm sure was unnecessary (I work in healthcare) - there's a reason US healthcare costs are so out of control. Overall he seems a skilled clinician, his office just needs to work on their scheduling practices.

Based on the comments, it looks like some people love him, and some people don't care for him. After meeting with him now a half dozen times or so, he really does not have a "wonderful" bedside manner and anyone who says as much is just wrong. He is something of a robot. That approach can come across as a little inhuman, insensitive and condescending. These are things he needs to work on. That being said, he seems entirely competent, comfortable in his practice and certainly busy. These all suggest that he will never change. If you visit him, you certainly won't miss out on the fact that the Wasingtonian Magazine thinks highly of him, nor will you happen to miss out on the 1200 calorie diet. By the way, he misdiagnosed me too, but no harm came of it--except that I spent $500 of my own money on a test I didn't need. No apology given--which just seems off and a little odd. Poor guy.

This was a couple of years ago, but I had a physical with Dr. Aleskow; he had me come back for follow ups because my cholesterol was high (low 200s). It turns out the extra follow up was probably unnecessary because, according to my next doctor (I switched jobs and changed insurance) my cholesterol was only high because of the HDL and my LDL was plenty low. Dr. Aleskow never gave me the breakdown and for some reason I trusted that he had checked it and I didn't ask. I'm sort of shocked to find out that Dr. Aleskow made this simple mistake (or perhaps it was just to collect some insurance money?). Either way, I won't be back.

Yes, he can come across as arrogant; yes, you will have to wait. But he is just as good as he thinks he is, and he tells you, in a straightforward manner, what is going on with your health and what needs to be done. If you are sick, he works you in or even calls you at home. He is very thorough. So for routine visits, you may have to wait. But know that, when you need immediate attention, he will see you while others wait. If you are so important that you just can't wait, ask for the first appointment in the morning. He is a VERY nice man, but if you want someone to sugar coat things, or not tell you, for instance, that you need to lose weight, then go somewhere else. If you want the best internist in DC, and want to get/stay healthy, then Dr. Aleskow is THE doctor for you and your family! I would seriously doubt anyone who claims he misdiagnosed them. Staff is very nice and friendly, and many have worked there for years, which is a very good sign of their respect for him.

Dr. Aleskow was referred to me by my gynecologist whom I trust completely...unfortunately my experiences with Dr. Aleskow have not been pleasant. He always rushes me out of his office, he doesn't listen and doesn't like to answer my questions. He's quick to give you medicine without weighing alternatives. Overall, I get the impression that he just doesn't care and that is why I left. To be fair he is very knowledgeable and is quick to give you his 1200 calorie diet to follow.

Dr. Aleskow provides a lot of face time and does the majority of the physical examination (rare in today's health care climate). My gynecologist goes to Dr. Aleskow for primary care needs. Dr. Aleskow is thorough and meticulous, which is necessary for a good doctor.

Dr Aleskow is amazing. I had the impression he was deeply concerned for me, and in a very compassionate way, took excellent care of me. Not everyone is 100% every day, and the caring is what makes the difference in a doctor. He is the best.

I've been seeing Dr. Aleskow for many years. Here's the reason I like his practice--even though waits can be long he always fits me in on the day I call. That to me is priceless.

A thorough and competent doctor with a friendly bedside manner. Never once hurried or rushed and always followed up when circumstances required it. The one negative experience I had was an extraordinarily long wait where over an hour and a half passed and I simply had to leave the office. Dr. Aleskow called me personally to apologize and made sure that I got priority scheduling for whenever I wanted to come in and reschedule. I almost switched practices, but his sincerity and follow-up convinced me to stay and I'm glad that I did.

I'd like to rate this doctor's knowledge and abilities, because I was referred to him by a doctor whose opinion I respect. However, his staff declined to "take on any new patients." Perhaps he is busy, but the staff made sure EXACTLY what health insurance plan I had before immediately declining to take me on. Perhaps Cigna PPO is not fair to doctors or has some sort of baggage attached, I don't know. I understand medicine is a business, but it sure didn't feel good to be referred to a doctor then turned away because my health insurance wasn't good enough.

Due to a shift in insurance, I went back to my former Internist. Before I switched, Dr. Aleskow had ordered some tests. My Internist reordered the tests anyway, so I didn't bother to follow up with Dr. Aleskow. The man tracked me down to give me the results, called my Internist and spoke with him and recommended another test based on a condition that I had not discussed with my Internist, but had discussed with Aleskow. I would go back to this man in a heartbeat. He's a bit unconventional, but I never felt he was talking down to me. I believed it when he said it was a pleasure to treat me. NO, I have never sued a doctor, nor am I some one "important." The one time I had to wait in the office, he personally, and effusively, apologized; he was giving flu shots to at-risk patients. Aleskow always spent as much time with me as I needed, including discussing diagnoses in his office, where I could concentrate on what he was saying. I found this extremely respectful.

Dr. Aleskow is obnoxious, disrespectful and spoke to me as if I was child. Sorry but there are plenty of good internists out there that treat their patients with respect.

Dr. Aleskow is one of the best diagnosticians around. He has a sixth sense about determining your medical problems and is very agressive about finding solutions or getting you priority referral. I know a number of people that have been going to him for years and believe he is one of the best you can find.

Dr. Aleskow is the best. I had pneumonia and was a new patient. He got me in the same day and gave me excellent care thereafter. He is personable, knowledgeable, and never in a hurry. He takes time with his patients and listens well. He is everything one would want in a doctor.
