:| Click to report rating    11/4/09 2 3 4 Myfamily has been going to Dr Backler for years. Unfortunately, Marsha made it financially impossible. G-d bless him, we love him. Marsha insisted on renewing prescriptions monthly for years instead of every 6 months &charged $20each time. Pharmacists said not cool! Probably illegal. OneFamily member had kidneystones - His diagnosis - gas. Iwas extremely sick and missed an appointment I made when I had fever and I asked her to confirm it. Instead, she told me I had to pay $100 for missing the appointment she never confirmed, or don’t come back. I did not have the money at the time. She knew I was suffering& did not have an ounce of compassion (which was generally thecase w/her). We’ve overlooked mistakes over the years causewe really love him; Doctors are human too. Could no-longer overlook Doberman-at-the-Door. If you don't work really hard to manipulate her exaggerate symptoms she won’t give appointments. Doctor is aware of this. Iwish them well. It was humiliating. I go to clinics.

:) Click to report rating    8/1/08 4 4 5 Dr. & Mrs.Backler are both great people. Marsha works very hard and GPs' are grossly underpaid in Quebec. In fact barely enough to pay for office space, let alone staff and ultimately expect Doctors' to process 4 to 6 people per hour!! Marsha..if you read this...God bless..if you let JOhn be..he would spend a half hour to an hour with many of his clients and friends!! What is a doctor to do to earn what should be an above average income. The government says , nickle and dime. Charge for this, charge for that...Dr.Backler runs the on site lab. This helps you and him. The government does not re-imburse the Doctor for his time nor the overhead to speak to a patient , review a file, write a new prescription..this 5 - 10 monutes from pulling file to putting it back..costs money..Remember process 4 to 6 per hour!! Folks the problem is not with John Backler nor Marhsa. Thank God..they chose not to retire or slow down their work day. Blame government !! Pay our Doctors please!! We need them.

:) Click to report rating    5/14/08 5 4 5 I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Backler, one of the most attentive doctors I have ever met. At first I have to agree that Marcia seemed to be very abrupt. However, as I have gotten to know her through my visits, she is actually a very nice person and very accomodating. I give her a lot of credit for the work that she does which from what I have noticed can be very overwhelming at times. As far as the comments I've read to do with the expense issue, I find Marcia to be just as accomodating in this area. Yes there are expenses for filling precriptions and private lab testing, but I would much rather pay for these services privately than to deal with walk in clinics or hospitals which I find to be a total nightmare. I am so thankful to have Dr Backler as my GP and also to Marcia for her kindness and willingness to always accomodate. I consider myself and my family fortunate to have Dr Backler as our GP. Many thanks to both of them for their care.

:) Click to report rating    5/9/08 4 4 5 Backler is a genuinely good doctor and nice person. On top of being a great doctor, we must give him credit for putting up with his wife, Marcia. Marcia is "special" and she can swing from kind, funny, caring person to rude, abrupt, and unreasonable. She often calls Dr. Backler and interrupts him during patient check-ups when she thinks it's taking too long - very unprofessional. Apart from Marcia, the only complaint I have is that the office is kind of messy/dirty and the examination rooms are very dusty...

:) Click to report rating    4/28/08 3 1 5 I think that the good Dr. is great. The trick with Marsha is to lie to her. So if you need to see him, tell her your leg is blue, you can't feel your arm, your vision is blurry, that you have been in contact with monkey pox, ebola and avian flu and then cough and weeze all over her. Trust me, you get pushed right through. Other than that the good Dr. has been our family physician for many years. In all honesty I don't begrudge him for the extra charges. In every case when we have been ill (even just to hear that we weren't dying!) Marsha has always made time for us and shown compassion. Let's face it, her job can't be easy, just listen to all the patients here ****ing about their service. So if perhaps everyone would get off her case, and let her do her job then she would probably be in a better mood. We have called countless of times to see him for 2 minutes early in the am and she has always helped us out. I guess if you treat her like a person then she treats you in kind.

:) Click to report rating    4/17/08 5 3 5 Dr. Backler is A1 -- LOVE him. I want to address all the negative comments about Marsha, however. Is Marsha abrupt? Yes. Do they charge fees for things like renewing prescriptions by phone or if you CHOOSE to do your lab tests there? Yes. However, I would sincerely like people to consider a few things here: Dr. Backler has WAY TOO MANY patients like most GP's in QC, and Marsha helps to keep him on time/track. Whenever myself or family member calls on emerg basis, we are seen the SAME DAY. Marsha has proven to us to be very compassionate and caring when we have been ill. Under normal circumstances, she can be abrupt but just don't wast her time as I see MANY patients do, like trying to barge into Dr. B's office to "just ask one question." She HAS to be a gatekeeper. As for the money for services -- Dr. B is running a staffed office and the medicare payments DO NOT cover that. If you go elsewhere, you will see that MOST doctors charge for these things just to stay afloat.

:) Click to report rating    3/24/08 3 3 4 Good Doctor; however, I am having difficulty getting an appointment within a reasonable due to the "Gate Keeper" Marsha. Marsha - pack it in - you are just not suited to your job. I actually feel sorry for Dr. B!!

:) Click to report rating    2/10/08 1 2 4 Good doctor; not the warmest but knowledgeable. His wife, who serves as receptionist, is horrible - should not be working with the public!

:( Click to report rating    1/27/08 1 1 1 In general I feel Dr. Backler is a very good GP. His registered nurse is terrific...polite, professional and cheerful. Marsha (the wife from hell I am sure) is rude, money hungry, doesn't care about the patients that wait 2 hours + for their appointment, appears bored with her job, sarcastic and just plain ugly. She should stop talking to her 100 friends a day on the phone & clean the dirtiest office & washroom that any doctor has ever had. The place is filthy. Each visit I find the price increased dramatically. In my opinion the cost of Lab services has more than doubled in 5 years. If you have money...see this doctor. If not...do not bother. I pay for their services and get this lousy service. Can you imagine the service you would get if you go to the hospital for your blood test!!! Honestly...he is good but Marsha makes it NOT WORTH IT! Go elsewhere.

:) Click to report rating    1/27/08 1 2 4 Dr. Backler is a great guy and a caring doctor, but more and more as I go to see him I feel its all about the "extra" money they make on the side instead of whether or not you are ill. You want to renew your prescription you either have to pay over $20.00 (not exactly sure how much now cause I don't want to pay, might be $40.00) or you have to go sit in his office for over 2 hours so he at least can "swipe" your card. He also has a lab on site that is incredibly expensive. As for Marsha, she's a good person but both of them have to start seeing people as patients and not dollar signs. He's been my doctor for many many years now and once upon a time it wasn't like this at all. I came first, not my cheque book.

:) Click to report rating    7/11/07 1 4 5 Dr Backler is the best GP I ever knew and he has provided the best care and understanding than any other doctor can offer. He is soft spoken, gentile and most importantly respects you and your business, if only we can say the same for is receptionist. If it wasn’t for the fantastic treatment of Doctor Backler, no one would ever book an appointment with him because of her cold uptight personality. Marsha, gives off the impression that Dr Backler is money hungry and will only help out his patients if they pay up front, and the fees are outrages more than any doctor in Montreal, I am sure. All Doctors s/b paid for his services but Marsha or Gate Keeper as I call her, will not help you unless you have money right away regardless how long you known Dr Backler. No help or understanding for the sick unless you have money to pay for it. That is really sad! Cheers to the Best Doctor in Montreal, Dr John Backler, congrats! Get rid of your wife, she is rude and uncaring!

:) Click to report rating *  6/14/07 3 5 A good listener - as a general practitioner should be - he takes in all the complaints, validates them and acts upon them. His referrals to other physicians are excellent and he has a network of colleagues that are equally good.

:) Click to report rating    5/14/07 3 5 He is great. Informed and informative. Human, reassuring, great bedside manner -- and doesn't hesitate to leap into action when things are serious. As for Marsha, well yes... her people skills leave something to be desired, HOWEVER, I discovered something interesting. If you take a moment to show interest in her, her whole atttitude changes drmatically. I think it's simply a case of being overworked and stressed -- and in all likelihood, being treated like a mere receptionist by patients who don't know she's Backler's wife. Smile, ask her how her day's going, ask if she has a vacation coming up -- and she warms up.

:) Click to report rating    5/3/07 3 4 No complaints for the care provided by Dr. Backler. However, his reception/wife Marsha is rude, demeaning and downright a liability to an otherwise good doctor.

:) Click to report rating    3/29/07 4 5 I have been a patient of his since he began practicing after Dr. Weisenthall went to Florida.I believe that he is one of the best doctors I know. His wife/receptionist is a no nonsense person. Don't waste her time and she will be very helpfull. I hope he does not retire soon and would recomend him to everyone.

:) Click to report rating    3/17/07 3 5 I have been a patient of Dr. Backler's for many years, and agree with the other posts. He is knowledgeable, very caring, and a great listener (although he gets pressured to rush by his receptionist/wife). There is usually a considerable wait time, but it's only because he takes his time with everyone. He's well worth the wait.

:) Click to report rating    1/22/07 2 3 Nice enough guy although not overly warm. Seems knowledgeable and is thorough. His wife, however, who serves as receptionist, is unfriendly and unwelcoming - not what people need when they're going to see a doctor! (This is not just my opinion - others who go to Dr. Backler have mentioned this as well.)
