15/04/13 1 1 1 1 My experience with Dr. Viljoen was scary. He is not my OB, but he was the on-call OB when my water broke 6 weeks early and I was a high risk pregnancy with twins. My water broke December 23, 2012 and he sent me home twice that day. He put my babies and myself in a very risky situation. I was given absolutely no direction on anything (ex. bed rest, antibiotics etc). Even my nurses said they wouldn't be going home if they were me. So I didn't. I went to McMaster where I received amazing, top of the line care. I did end up with an infection which caused my babies heart rates to increase, putting stress on them as well as myself. As a result of this, I ended up having a c-section. This was a totally preventable incident, had I had earlier care when my water broke. When you sign up to become a doctor, you don't always get to enjoy the holidays, as your job may require you to care for another. Sorry for disrupting your Christmas holidays..oh wait, I didn't cause you never came in  Respond

11/02/13 3 2 1 3 Dr. Viljoen used to be a good doctor, when I had my 1st child. 5 years later, he has become bitter, rushed, cranky, runs late, and does not want to be bothered with trivial questions. A major disappointment. When I first saw him as a gyn, he told me how difficult it would be for me to conceive due to health problems. After I conceived with my 2nd, he was disinterested and very sharp with me. He dilly-dallied so long coming to the hospital, I could not get an epidural. I was in freaking PAIN, but all he did was yell at me and tell me how immature I was (I was pushing 40, so not an irrational youngster!). He used to be gentle, but that all changed. I would stay FAR AWAY from him. Oh--he ALWAYS ran late (both pregnancies). And if you show up within 5 minutes of your appt time, he considers it a missed appt. :(  Respond

10/10/12 5 5 5 5 Dr. Viljoen is a great doctor. He is always on time for appointments and friendly and patient. When I first saw him for my first pregnancy, I was given a letter explaining that he encourages his patients to ask questions and that my appointments would be as long as I make them. He was so supportive and helpful throughout my pregnancy. I always felt like I was in good hands. Heidi, his receptionist is amazing and treats each patient like they are her good friend. She is wonderful. Chris, his RPN can have a bit of an attitude but she does mean well. The only negative comment is that Dr. Viljoen allows his medical students to gather info without his supervision. In my 7th month, his student told me she could not find a heartbeat in my otherwise very healthy baby. Dr. Viljoen found the heartbeat no problem once she called him into the room. This was an unnecessary panic. I would have appreciated Dr. Viljoen being present while students examined me. Great doctor!  Respond

09/08/12 5 5 4 5 I absolutely would recommend Dr. Viljoen to anyone. I never had to wait very long for my appointments which was great, seeing as I was very pregnant. He was very efficient with my exams and when I had a question he answered it without making me worried. I have not gone to him for any physicals yet. When I went in to get my Nova-T in it was a very quick visit.  Respond

26/07/12 1 2 1 2 We were really happy with Dr Viljoen following our first prenatal appointment. Unfortunately, things went downhill after that first visit. We decided to do IPS screening and also had our 20 week anatomy scan, during which time our appointments were cancelled. When we finally did get in to see him, we had to ask about the results of tests which had been completed almost 2 months prior! I understand that not every doctor is proactive in reporting test results if everything is fine, but it seemed a bit ridiculous that we had to wait so long before we got any answers. As for the bladder infection I had towards the end of my 2nd trimester, Dr Viljoen wrote me a prescription for an antibiotic that was known to be ineffective for that strain, and then neglected to contact me when the infection never went away. His staff are also very rude and treat patients horribly. We switched doctors and I'm glad we did! Never again will I see this man for any health matters!  Respond

16/01/12 2 3 1 1 This doctor uses students to gather your information which I found to be very uncomfortable. On top of that he does not give a courtesy call to remind patients of their appointment even if the appointment was made months in advance, instead he will simply charge you a $75 fee, even if you come on the right day of your appointment but the wrong time. He is a money hungry doctor with no care for his actual medical pratice. He "recommended" I go on a surrogate pregnancy to try and figure out if I have endometriosis. All this accomplished was an increase in my discomfort and blood clots. I have to now get a new referral for a new gyno because there is no way I will continue taking medical advice from such an uncaring person  See Responses

25/08/11 5 4 5 5 My experience was very good. I was pregnant as a surrogate and Dr. Viljoen was willing to include the baby's parents in the appointments and the birth. Late in the pregnancy, the parents actually caused a problem trying to get him to breech my privacy but Dr Viljoen refused to breech my rights. My care never suffered because of the stress they caused, and I couldn't have asked for a better advocate. The birth went very well. He checked on me himself several times in hospital himself rather then rely on the nurse for everything, and we had a smooth and complication free birth. He didn't force me to have a chemical induction like most doctors do. I recommend him to anyone as a great doctor.  Respond

17/06/11 5 5 5 5 Dr Viljoen, has been a great doctor for me, going through menopause has not been so great for me. I was struggling in my intimate life with my husband, because I was in pain a lot due to dryness. He listened to my frustration. Offered a new product called a Estring,....it was the best advice I could have gotten. My husband is extremely happy, and so am I. The knowledge Dr Viljoen had about this product was great and his follow up was very very good!!  Respond

08/05/11 3 1 1 1 I have been to him a few times and overall, I find him to not be helpful. He did not care to hear what my symptoms were and I feel rushed every time I go. I feel like his expertise or comfort zone may be only in delivery and pregnancy. He does not seem to be knowledgeable in other women issues.  Respond

05/04/11 5 5 5 5 Dr. Viljeon was a God send for me. i had him for my first pregnancy and he was great. He gives it to you strait and doesn't mince words. I like that.I was not able to have him for delivery as he wasn't on call. For my second baby I went to a different doctor and there were complications. He asked Dr. V for a second opinion...says a lot if a doctor even looks to him for advice! I was hospitalized and so frightened. Dr. V came right to my room, knelt down to speak to me and told me that my baby and I were going to be fine and I believed him. The other doctor still delivered my baby but I will never forget the care that Dr. Viljoen gave.  Respond

25/06/09 4 5 5 5 I love Dr. Viljoen, in my experience the ones who don't like him are the ones that expect to be treated better than everyone else. He sees pregnant women EVERYDAY. He expects you to take initiative to be healthy and educated and will answer any and all questions IF you ask them. I had two c-setions with him, he checked on me everyday while in hospital, I healed very quickly. I am pregnant with my third and am hoping that I get in with him again.  Respond

15/11/08 1 1 1 1 I was sent to Dr Viljoen for my second child - my original ob Dr had moved away for a while. During my visits Dr had informed me I had group b strep and needed a needle and iv at the time of birth. I informed my Dr. that the baby would be big and probably would need a c section because of having broken pelvic bones when I was younger. My arrival to the hospital I informed the nurse of this needle and Iv. She said there was nothing in the chart and that I could not worry about the out come of my baby now. My son was almost 9 pds. He was born blue with the cord around his neck twice. But Dr. Viljoen also broke my sons collar bone (because he was too big). My son had to wear a sling for the first 8 weeks of his life. It was a terrifying delivery as I almost lost my son. My family Dr. wanted me to sue him but I did not and I should have. When we checked my sons files at our Drs - Dr. Viljoen had left out that my son had a broken collar bone - how convenient and imagine that....  See Responses

11/08/08 1 1 1 3 The service is horrible! I waited 2 months for the appointment and when came was told with smile that we’re late and appointment was reschedule 1 month later! Appointment was July 31 2008 at 2:45PM and we were there at 2:42PM, while exiting the elevator his secretary entered in holding garbage bags. We say hello and head for the office door assuming she would just dump bags and return - the door was locked! Waited 30 minutes by the door. Went across the street to General Hospital assuming he might have an emergence call... The hospital personal were very helpful trying to contact the office for one hour, they called doctor’s private line, send fax asking to call back but there was no answer! August 4th answering service said they on vacation until August 11. Call back on 11th and secretary accused us of being late, that she waited with doctor for us 30 minutes and we never came. I told her otherwise but she was lying to my face and offering to reschedule a new appointment – I refused!!  Respond

20/02/08 5 5 5 5 I had Dr. Viljoen for a surgery, and then throughout my pregnancy. He and his staff were wonderful to me. You NEVER have to wait long in the waiting room like at a regular doctors office. (Unless he gets called in for a delivery, which didn't happen on any of my appointments.) He always took the time to explain everything to me, and ask if I had any questions. When I went into early labour, he met me at the hospital right away. (his office is right across the street) Although I had to deliver out of town, he was there to see me off, and wish me well. I will definatley use him again if I hopefully am pregnant in the future. My husband was impressed with him as well.  Respond

15/10/07 2 4 1 2 Dr. Vilgoen was very professional but rushed. He answered questions in the fewest words possible and used very textbook answers. Relying mostly on "every pregnacy is different". It was my first child and he estimated her weight to be about 7 lbs when in fact she was 9.13 lbs. That is a big difference. His staff not recommendable. The nurse was completely arrogant and rude and had a habit of looking down on patients. With her attitude it was hard to ask questions and made the visit very uncomfortable. Dr. Viljoen also sent me to the hospital to induce my labour but did not arrange anything with the hospital - leaving me looking like a fool.  Respond

30/07/07 5 5 5 5 Dr. Viljoen was my OB for three of my four children. After all three of these deliveries I had complications and he was always right there for me with the care I needed. He has an excellent bedside manner and always made me feel like a young mother, even though I was a little older. He could always read my emotions and could tell when I needed a little more rest and TLC. I adore him, he is truly the best.  Respond

23/04/07 3 5 5 He was on call when i delivered my daughter. Didn't really get a good chance to met him as he came into the room while i was pushing. I liked the idea that he mannually stretched me and didn't resort to cutting. Had a great sense of humour, was really encouraging and allowed me to maintain contact with my baby's head when i wanted/needed to.  Respond

23/03/07 4 4 4 Dr. Viljoen delivered my first child in 2002. Overall, he did a wonderful job, and I liked having him as my OB. My one disappointment, was that when I first went to him, around 28 weeks, he told me to come prepared with lots of questions every time, to feel free to ask lots of questions. Then, when I did bring questions to my appointments, he would appear rushed and very "put upon" to have to listen to my list. However, he does have a very good sense of humour - and actually popped up from between my legs between contractions to ask how the musical was that I'd asked his permission to attend in Toronto the previous week had been! Makes a great story!  Respond

07/03/07 3 2 2 He was not my OB but delivered my second child. It was horrible! In his defence I realize it was a late night delivery and he was coming from out of town and quite frankly barely got his jacket off before I was ready to deliver. But this being my second child I knew what to expect in general. The delivery was very short but in the end, instead of massaging the placenta out it was basicly ripped from my body. Two days later I was back in the hospital for an emergency D&C to remove the rest of the placenta left in my body. I have friends who had him as a doctor and have nothing but good to say about him. Maybe my experience was not the norm. But I definately would not recommend this doctor to anyone based on my experience  Respond

18/02/07 5 4 3 All through my pregnancy he was very laid back and low key, everything was great. Then on my due date he seemed to panic and all of a sudden didn't want to do my delivery. Afterwards I had major complications and since I have heard quite a few of his paitients have had the same complications. He is a nice kindhearted man but I believe alot of trouble could have been avioded. I am happy with the end result of our gorgeous & healthy baby boy.  Respond

15/02/07 1 1 5 My 93 year old Mother was given a prescription for an antibiotic which did not interact well with her other prescriptions. She fell and appeared to be in a quasi stupor with very laboured breathing. We called and left more than one message for the doctor to call us back but unfortunately after four days we have yet to hear back from him. I have no problem with his skills as a doctor only his lack of concern in this instance.  See Responses
