:( Click to report rating *  7/20/09 1 1 1 I do not understand why Richard barter is still working at a place where sick people go to be treated,,,The Hospital .This man is honestly the worse dr and person I ever met in my life .After visiting the HSC i was looked at by this man .I was there with a bad shoulder after falling but this man accused me of trying to cut through the red tape to see a neuralgist by coming to the er with another problem .I was actually frightened by his behavour that I left no time after .Alot of other things were said but their isn't enough characters to write it all .I did report him to the Health Care and after a couple of register letters I was asked if I wanted a formal apoligy in which I wrote back to him and said No .I told the Health Care that I never want to hear his name again and the biggest reason for writing them was because I was thinking of the elderly . .He is rude, arragant, and should never be allowed to pratice medicine. I don't understand with many negative comments why he is there

:( Click to report rating    4/23/09 1 1 1 I suffered with chronic severe and daily gall bladder pain. First attack, brought in by ambulance. I suspected gall stones and asked for an ultrasound. Dr. Barter refused to give me this diagnostic procedure and sent me home suggesting that I was "just looking for pain medication". 3 months later, a scheduled ultrasound confirmed the large stones in my gall bladder. A month after that, the pain became continuous, daily severe pain. Because it was the summer "shut down" period for surgury, Barter just kept telling me to see my GP, who kept telling me to go back to Emergency. Finally, I contacted a biliary surgeon in Montreal who told me that DAILY CONSTANT pain is a sign that something is seriously wrong. Was immediately referred to a terrific surgeon - David Pace - and had my gall bladder removed just before it was about to rupture. Post surgical visit: I had 14 sharp stones and my gb was chronically inflammed and diseased. Refuse to see Dr. Barter. He never believes patients.

:( Click to report rating    4/21/09 1 1 1 This doctor should not be practicing medicine of any kind. My mom present to the ER Dept at the St Clare's site and was mis-diagnosed with Pulmonary embolism. What she really had was an ulcer. Dr Barter order Lovenox which caused her death. The medical board should re-voke his licence and do a through investigation.

:( Click to report rating    1/13/09 1 1 1 WORST DOCTOR EVER. He should seriously be fired. I ended up in the ER very sick and he sent me home. A day later i almost died. He doesn't care for his patients and he is so rude. Why he is allowed to practice in the ER is beyond me.

:) Click to report rating    7/30/08 5 5 5 Dr. Barter knows his ER stuff down pat. Skills are matched with the early gray hairs of personal experience. Quick and efficient. Has to try to juggle an overrun ER but does his best in my opinion. Tries to really go after the treatments that give people the best actual results. 5/5.

:( Click to report rating    6/6/08 5 5 1 Went to the ER with a pain in my side at 9 weeks pregnant. With a past miscarriage just months before, I was not taking any chances. An intern assessed me at first, was very thorough, compassionate and informative. Then in came Dr. Barter who was very short and rude, absolutly no bed-side mannor. I felt as though I was putting him out!! I was very nervous given my past history and he said to me "well, whatever will be, will be" and walked out. I was shocked by his statement and it made me very upset. Thanks for the great insight! I just wanted medical advice, not rude comments. Needless to say, feeling quite uncomfortable by his statement, I made an appointment with my GP, who assessed me and eased my mind. In the future, I hope I have absolutly no encounters with Dr. Barter. Why is this man in the ER! NO BED-SIDE MANNER

:( Click to report rating    3/29/08 1 1 1 This guy is a JOKE. If it was upto him I would be dead. I seen him first with a very bad pain in my side. He gave me a rough prostrate exam and sent me home without checking my adominal section. Tured out I had a tumor in my bowel. If he at least had to examine my side he would of felt it like my surgon. Fans of his can make excuses for him but on my second visit he was still no help. I had to wait for an eventual untrasound to find somethhing wrong with my bowel. Dr Richard Barter if you read this please take care of your patients and thanks for nothing. The 52 lbs I lost are back and if I return to ER I will first finid out if you are working so I can avoid you. Even with this poor medial treatment you are arrogant and much of an ****.

:(      9/12/07 3 3 1 My daughter ended up in ER with high temp, pain in neck, rash and severely dehydrated . Dr. Barter did a lumbar puncture which turned out to be clear. Told us she had a bad flu to home and get rest. We were back in the ER less than 12hrs later. Her vital organs began to shut down. Finally diagnosed with Scarlett Fever and almost lost her. Thanks Doc.

:) Click to report rating    6/7/07 5 5 Whenever anyone in my family has a need to go to the ER, (thankfully not a lot) we look for Dr. Barter. He is thorough, consise and no nonsense. He is there to work not socialize. He's one of the few people I see in the ER that actually moves at a quick pace, as opposed to the persons who move around in slo-mo, like there's nothing better to do. And you're right, Dr. Dick doesn't have time to get emotional about your hang nail... in the next room the patient is probably really sick. Don't like the treatment, try going to St. Clare's ER. Now that experience is...an experience. DB

:) Click to report rating    6/3/07 4 5 I was rushed in to the ER during Christmas week with a blood clot in my lung..Dr Barter reassured me all was going to be ok. I had to have injections during the week and have my blood checked daily. Dr Barter called me at home and made all arrangements necessary so that I could relax and know I was going to be ok. I found that comforting that he would do that..knowing how upset I was. I actually look for Dr Barter if I have to go to the ER...

:(      4/27/07 1 1 I CALLED HOSPITAL AND EXPLAINED WHAT PROBLEM WAS AND THEY TOLD ME TO COME TO ER.WHEN I GOT THEIR AND SAW DR.BARTER,DID'NT KNOW WHO HE WAS,HE JUST WALKED IN AND SAID,I QUOTE (IT'S NOT A MACDONALDS THAT I AM RUNNING HERE) AND WALKED OUT.THE NURSE COULD'NT BELIEVE WHAT HE SAID, AND SAID THEIR WAS NOTHING SHE COULD DO BUT FOR ME TO RETURN WHEN THE MORNING SHIFT CAME ON.THE DOCTORS ON THAT MORNING WERE SHOCKED,BUT I DON'T THINK THEY WERE SURPRISED BY WHAT HE SAID.I REPORTED DR.BARTER TO MEDICAL BOARD,THEN AFTER MEDICAL BOARD SPOKE TO HIM,HE CALLED AND SAID HE WAS SORRY FOR WHAT HE SAID.I DON'T THINK ANY VISIT TO ER.IS NONSENSE,I DON'T KNOW ABOUT ANYONE ELSE BUT THAT IS NOT MY IDEA OF A FUN EVENING SITTING IN A WAITING ROOM,FOR HOURS SOMETIMES JUST TO SEE A DOCTOR.I GUESS THEIR ARE ONLY THE CHOSEN FEW WHO BELIEVE THEIR VISIT TO ER IS NOT NONSENSE,WELL IS'NT THAT CUTE.I AM JUST TELLING WHAT HAPPENED WITH MY VISIT THEIR.

:( Click to report rating    4/24/07 1 1 I think this Dr Should find a new profession!! He is VERY rude! My Bro went to the Er, and was sent home without doing any tests, blood nor urine, He was told he has Gastro, He ended up back in the ER within 24 hours, and rushed into ICU, where he ended up on life support, and barly made it! Thank God he is doing much better Now, But it could have been avoided had Dr Barter done some simple tests! HE is the Worst Dr Ive ever met! As for those of you stating that he has a right to be the way he is because he works in the ER, Then Maybe he should find a new job! He knew what he was getting himself into during his 7 years of becoming a Doctor! If you hate your Job that much... MOVE ON! Do "us" all a Favour!

:)      4/20/07 5 5 Perhaps you didn't understand plain English ? The doc was probably telling you in no uncertain fashion that you were in the ER for a nonsense reason that could quite easily have been attended to by your GP. He's there to treat emergencies, Einstein, and I'm QUITE sure he would not have said something like that to you without reason. Problem is, you obviously didn't like the truth. And yes, he is quite entitled to refuse to see you for a nonsense reason. Responding by calling him a mental patient is a reflection upon you, not him.

:)   *  3/30/07 5 5 For those of you who are making bad comments about Dr. Barter, you obhviously haven't given his dues. This man works long hours and days in the Emerg at the HSC and can't always be the happy-go-lucky, fun-loving, compassionate man that you want. If you want that than the ER unit is not the place to be. Dealing with sick people day in and out can often be very monitinous, stressful and mind boggling, so the fact that he is still working there should compliment him and his dedication to his job. I have never had one bad experience with Dr. Barter and any time I was at the Emerg (and it was quite often because I suffer from severe asthma)and he was on, he treated me with the upmost respect and dignity. Well, as much as one can when you are dealing with so many sick patients at one time. He is what we would define as "over-worked and under-paid." Dr. Barter is a great doctor and anyone with a closed mind or their mind already made up before seeing him would know this!

:)   *  3/26/07 3 4 I had occasion to vist the ER as a result of side effects resulting from medication prescribed by my family doctor. In was on the w/e and I was having severe headache and mood swings, ie crying over everything. The dr. in the ER was Dr. Barter. Found him to be very compassionate, unlike the nurse/assistant who I saw at front, she was very rude. He did not make me feel uncomfortable even though I was very upset. He also was thorough; he didn't take my word that I was suffering from side effects, bud did his own investigation. He gave me a different antibiotic, and something for the severe pain I was having. Found him very professional.

:(      3/15/07 3 2 This doctor reminds me of what a root canel must be like. He is impatient..you are a case to deal with and has a real tough edge to him. I believe he knows a great deal but why he is a doctor I know not why. It must be hell on earth to work with him

:(      1/27/07 1 1 I have had the unfortunate experience to deal with Dr. Barter in the emergency room @ the Health Sciences Center. He does not listen well to the patient . He is quick to form an opinion without carefully listening to the patient. Unfortunately, I have had to make a number of visits to the emergency room and would actually dread the thought of him being there. Absolutely, no bedside manner!!!!!!!!!!!11

:( Click to report rating    1/13/07 2 1 My mother was having chest pains and was sent to the hospital, by another Dr. Dr.Barter was on call at the time, he told her that there was nothing wrong with her and sent her home. On the way out of the hospital she said to him, that he had sent her home to die. He told her to come back in and he would look at her again. My mother was so upset, she didn't want anything to do with him then. Within a couple of weeks she was back in the hospital and had a triple bypass done. This is not hear say, because I was with her the whole time.
