07/04/11 5 5 5 5 In my experience, Dr. Garvey has an extraordinary ability to cut to the heart of the matter. I have also found his approach to therapy practical and compassionate. There is a natural and easy humour to his manner that often as not allows your to leave with a smile on your face. Overall, in my opinion, a remarkable therapist.  Respond

06/01/11 5 5 5 5 Dr. Garvey is a really good psychiatrist. He is personable and easy to talk with. His knowledge base is broad. He regularily attends professional conferrences and can quote from current research journals. He is virtually always on time.  Respond

21/09/10 1 1 1 1 He is very arrogant, has no knowledge and is not interested at all in helping patients. He should not have a license at all. Hopefully he is forced to retire as soon as possible.  Respond

11/04/10 1 1 1 1 i would usually drive 40 minutes to be pushed out his door in 10. he doesn't give a damn about you, but he will quickly give you lorezepam. which basically ruined my life for 6 months. out of the blue he refused to see me anymore because i had trouble opening up to him. he diagnosed me with social anxiety the week before. maybe someone with social anxiety would have trouble opening up to a ****ing stranger / doctor. oh well, the hell with him.  Respond

10/08/08 5 5 5 5 Dr. Garvey is a brilliant and caring man. I have never in my life known anyone who has the understanding of ADHD or anxiety that he possesses. He is a true gentleman. Nova Scotia is very fortunate that he continues serve us.  See Responses

07/06/08 1 1 1 1 You would be better off going to see a Veternarian than to be saddled down with this nut bar! He is rude, self absorbed and personally I felt he could care less about the patient and really concerned with how many patient contact forms he could show at the end of the month - to get that big fat paycheck! He really needs to help his patients by STOP WORKING and retire. Probably alot of people would be far better off if he was out of the system.  Respond

11/03/08 5 1 3 2 Dr. Garvey was consistently late for my appointments. Sometimes as late as 45 minutes because "he was playing his banjo by the river." It made me feel unimportant. I also found him dismissive of many my complaints. I found he easily prescribed medication that helped with my acute anxiety but failed to be interested in the reason for it. For years I have been prescribed antidepressants with not much further investigation. I feel that had Dr. Garvey taken the time to investigate my situation more thoroughly, I would of long ago been on my way to good mental/physical health.  Respond

01/12/07 4 5 4 5 Dr. Garvey was very kind and helpful to me. He took a personal interest and even phoned me at home to see how I was doing. He always asked me my opinion on decisions that he made concerning my treatment and addressed any concerns that I might have unlike some doctors who think they are God and do notlike it if you question what they say. I found Dr. Garvey to be very kind and caring.  See Responses

01/10/07 5 5 5 5 Hes a great Dr. Some people just get so wrapped up in themselves that they just think they are sick and want the attention for it. If he gets in your face, its only to help you become a better person. You are just angry because thats not the reaction you want from him. I fully recomend him if you infact have a serious problem, and arent just in it for the attention.  Respond

14/05/07 4 4 5 Seems to be hate-Dr.-Garvey time here. This man helped me through some of the most difficult years of my life. I found him to be blunt, in your face, and one of the smartest men I've ever met. Also one of the hardest working. He doesn't like whiners or liars. I was neither. Thanks for all the help, Doc.  See Responses

24/04/07 5 5 5 Dr. Garvey is an extremely well educated, knowledgeable and compassionate doctor. He has gone the second mile for me on a number of occasions; interceding on my behalf while I was trying to overcome agoraphobia and shyness. He has never referred to drugs as a cure, but as a tool to stabilize a situation in order that work can be done. He has made a great deal of difference in the way I am able to live my life.  Respond

15/04/07 1 1 1 Psychiatrist that refuses to treat mentally ill patients, his area has extremely high rate of suicides from untreated mentally ill teenagers and young adults. My daughter is lucky to still be alive, this is only because I kept fighting to get her help by removing her from his district and finding doctors who have compassion, many others were not so fortunate. My younger daughter and I lived in fear of our lives when this daughter was episodal, I was told she was just selfish and trying to get attention and it was about time she grew up. He also stated when her first met her (at the age of 15) that she appeared to have schizophrenia but he doesn't treat teenagers at which point he got up and left the room. No referral and in this area there is no recourse, you're stuck with the only psychiatrist that works your district.  See Responses

01/04/07 1 1 1 A disgrace to his profession -no other way to describe him.......nobody can calculate the suffering and misery he has caused over more than 3 decades........and now treating our veterans????? - what a slap in the face that must be to people who fought against tyranny and evil! Surely we can do better than that - he should not be able to collect another penny from the people of Nova Scotia!  Respond

19/03/07 1 1 1 Dr. Garvey is a disappointment, as a doctor and as a person. He has betrayed my trust as a patient and confidence in the Nova Scotia Mental Health. It is extremely discouraging to know that a doctor that has been practicing for thirty some odd years can take advantage of a patients' trust and than choose to slander a patient because he or she disagrees with his ways of practicing. This says a lot to his morals and values as a doctor but more importantly, as a person. He should be ashamed, but that would take work, and anyone who has been referred to him knows that that would be asking too much from him. Dr. Garvey here's a pill...RETIRE...and swallow it!  Respond

19/03/07 3 1 2 This man is an affront to all legitimate medical practitioners, and a continual violator of the Hippocratic oath. Aside from prescribing medication, which admittedly was needed initially, he provided nothing but grief in my life as a result of sharing information about me with other patients, including providing personal contact information to someone who then pursued what was ultimately a an extremely harmful relationship with me as a result of his misguided, unprincipled attempts at matchmaking. He is a menace, and a discredit to the profession.  Respond

15/02/07 2 1 1 This man should not be a doctor!! While in a deep depression I was sent to see him. After several visits I found that all he did was write prescriptions and ask if I wanted to be off work completely, one year or six months. I would try to explain that I wanted my life back and my job was part of it, he still could not understand me. He would yell at me, tell me that I was lying and even refused to see me after an attempted suicide. Stay away from this man.  Respond

08/02/07 2 5 5 No woman should see this person for medical advice!! He does not have any understanding of how women think or feel. He would write out presciptions for all my meds wether I needed them or not. He did this knowing I had tried suicide :the method, pills. When I admitted having suicidal thoughts, he looked at me and said " not to be so stupid.".He also refused to see me in hospital after the attempt. I was very ill at the time this happened,I am recovering nicely now, the first step was getting as far away from Garvie as possible.  Respond

08/01/07 4 5 5 I'm suprised at Dr. Garvey's poor ratings. He was a great help to me 30 years ago when I went through a very difficult time in my life. He was there for me, could phone him when needed and much better feedback than I got at Fundy Mental Health centre This was zilch. Maybe he needs to retire.  Respond

12/12/06 4 1 1 He?s dangerous and should be avoided. After four years of treatment while in the military, I was discharged. Looking for a civilian psychiatrist to continue my treatment, I ended up in Dr. Garvey's office. He was insulting, confrontational, and openly hostile. Eventually I found a psychiatrist who resumed my treatment. When considering that psychiatric patients are people with mental illness, it is quite dangerous of Dr. Garvey to be so confrontational and derisive. He shouldn't be treating anyone. In my particular case, Dr. Garvey's provocations produced a bad reaction. Subsequent to his appointment, extensive psychiatric examination concluded that I had been traumatized during military service. He certainly should have been more humane/prudent. I expected more from a healthcare professional.  Respond
