:( Click to report rating    11/5/09 4 3 2 A shoulder pain or an earache should not be attributed to weight issues. Dr. Tan has been over-focussed on weight issues for years, and the only reason most patients continue to see him is that it's easy to get in to see him when you need antibiotics for a flu. But don't go see him if you don't need to be humiliated and abused when you've got a sore finger. It's all because you're overweight and won't help yourself. Been seeing him for years, but as soon as another doctor is available, I'll be making other arrangements.

:) Click to report rating    8/28/09 4 4 4 I have been seeing Dr. Tan for over 20 years. He and his staff have been there for my family through illness after illness. Back in the day when I rented/school he always made sure if I was sick that I had meds. food and good health trying to cut costs for me anyway he could. He takes the time to check/follow up on patients when they need it the most. When I had been really sick with a bug, he took the time to stop in and check on me on his way home to making sure I was getting better. How many do that on their time...His accent I will admit is difficult at times but I have confidence in his abilities.

:( Click to report rating    11/6/08 1 5 1 I went to see Dr. Tan a few years ago when I was working at a retail place that I was very stressed at. I had spoken with someone at the Health Science and they gave me 2 days off, but I needed more. I heard his name recommended for if you needed a note to get off work. I explained that I was stressed, depressed, was having money problems but the job I had was terrible. He asked what my boyfriend did and I told him he was going to school so he couldn't contribute to our finances. He told me to leave my boyfriend and find someone with a job to provide for me, or go back to live with my parents. I was crying before I left, and he had no sympathy or compassion at all.

:) Click to report rating    8/27/08 4 4 4 I've been seeing Dr.Tan for 7 years now, I first began going to him at 18 years old when I moved into St. John's. I never had one problem with him. When I need prescriptions renewed...he renews them. When I go and complain about being sick (flu or headcold) he gives me a prescription if he thinks I NEED one. After going to him several times with throat infections, he sent me to see an ENT specialist- I ended up getting my tonsils out. Best move ever. I've been to him for panic attacks, the flu, stomahc flus....or just to complain about health issues. He always follows up with me. Tells me what a pleasure I am to have as a patient...we chat about his family, my family....education-...of course he has his "less friendly" days--but we all do. As for the over weight comments?? Im not overweight--but I dont blame him for giving his opinions....anyone who can read knows the health issues with being overweight.....

:| Click to report rating    3/26/08 4 5 3 Doesn't always seem to listen to your health problems the way a doctor should.

:( Click to report rating    1/28/08 3 3 1 Very unhelpful. When I first moved to the city I needed to have a workplace insurance form completed, and he was one of the few available for me to see. In the process of completing a form (which only needed to say that I was medically fit to work) he informed me that I immediately needed to go on Atkins, and should get pregnant as soon as possible (without even knowing any details of my personal life, marital status, preference for kids etc). A very poor example of his profession.

:( Click to report rating *  1/24/08 2 2 1 i find hes rushing you out & if your pinkie hurt he will tell you that your over weight & then send you for bloodwork . hes big on the blood work . & when i was expecting #3 he told me i should have my tubes tied because its hard to love more than 3 children . & he doesnt like sending children to specalists my little one had ear trouble for months till i demanded seeing an ent & we find out she has ear trouble . he was pushing antibiotics on her. if i could find another dr who will take my large family id be gone . of course you can see him right away theres no patients left. well the over weitht ones ( but then again to him everyone is over weight)

:( Click to report rating    8/29/07 1 5 1 HAS TO BE THE WORST DOCOTOR EVER. WHEN TO SEE HIM ABOUT 3 THINGS AND WOULD ONLY HELP ME WITH 2. SAID I NEEDED TO MAKE A 1/2 HOUR APPOINTMENT IN ORDER TO GET ALL THREE THINGS LOOKED AFTER. NEEDLESS TO SAY THAT I DID NOT GO TO HIM ANYMORE. WOULD NOT TAKE CARE OF OTHER 2 PROBLEMS WOULD DO AT MY 1/2 HOUR APPOINTMENT. FORE WARNING: DO NOT GO AND SEE THIS DOCTOR. VERY IGNORANT AND UNHELPFUL.

:) Click to report rating    6/19/07 5 5 How does 30+ years with one doctor stack up as being qualified to speak for or against a person? It has been this long since I have been a patient of Dr. Tan. I read with disbelief some of the previous 'bad' comments and put it down to a few people who want miracles instead of good mediacl care or were disappointed because Dr. Tan is anything but an indiscriminate drug prescriber. Very professional, very caring, very knowledgable. I have recommended many to see Dr. Tan and will continue to do so. Dr. Tan is always current with the latest mediacl research and studies and has always worked with me to overcome my medical issues. I do not normally contribute to forums like this - but I cannot just sit by and have a few denigrate an excellent medical person who has always done proud the profession he has chosen as a career.

:| Click to report rating    5/26/07 3 2 I have been going to Dr. tan for yrs now. All he talks about is my WEIGHT!!!I am a little over weight but not obes. My last visit July/06 I lost it with him in his office and asked him to STOP telling me that any illness is attributed to my weight..Lately I had been feeling sick and refused to go see him. I finally relented and YES again it was my weight..Just because he is small don't mean that he has to slap it up to his patients..A real QUACK..

:) Click to report rating    5/3/07 4 4 Tends to focus too much on weight issues, to the exclusion of other possible causes of illness.

:) Click to report rating    3/22/07 5 5 I've been going to Dr Tan since I moved to St. John's to attend MUN almost 15 yrs ago.I believe he is a caring and thorough Dr.He has treated me for mild infections to a serious eye condition and during my pregnancy.Whenever he has felt that I needed the advice of a specialist,he has ensured that I see one promptly, instead of waiting for months.Although my eye condition was being treated by referred specialists,he called me personally to check on my progress. He has been gentle and caring with my baby. From reading other ratings,I've noticed that some people have commented that he is concerned about their weight.Being overweight causes many health problems, which I'm sure Dr. Tan sees everyday in his line of work.It must be very frustrating for him to see patients complaining about back problems, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc. when he knows that their weight is a contributing factor.Dr.s are not miracle workers;you need to work with your Dr and not expect a pill to fix everything.

:(      3/15/07 3 2 Dr. Tan is a pill pusher. He doesn't even take the time to listen to your concerns, he just gives a percription for one thing or another and hopes for the best. I've begged my family to stop going to him for years, especially my mom. Any problem she has, weather it be a sore throat, a bad back, or her blood pressure, he automatically tells her it's her weight. He's just beyond rude, and i'm glad to say that i don't go to him anymore.

:(      3/14/07 1 1 My only encounter with this man came from a throat infection. My job entails me talking all day and thus I am prone to such ailments. While he did prescribe an antibiotic, he proceeded to blame my issue on my weight, which is average. I'm not a doctor, but what does a person's weight have to do with a throat infection? I felt very rushed, he was very pushy and I would not recommend him to anyone.

:) Click to report rating    1/19/07 5 5 Keeps me on my toes re alcohol use/abuse. Is gentle with my ego. Does NOT prescribe inappropriately, either in anticipation of condition/diagnosis, or current condition. Will revisit at appointed times.

:) Click to report rating    1/11/07 5 5 He is very nice doctor with straight forward personality. I have seen several other medical doctors before and found him the best. He tells me his opinion straight forward and never waste my time. When I saw other doctors I hardly got their honest opinions and only ask me to come back for more appointments for something I know I do not have to see them again. That is probablly why some doctors looks busier than him.

:( Click to report rating    12/11/06 4 1 The worst of the worst these days. There is a reason it is so easy to see him - he has few patients that haven't left for other docs. My last visit before I had even opened my mouth to tell him about an injured ankle, he was writing a script for antibiotics because he had heard me sneeze. If you want a script, go for it. If you want sound medical assistance... go anywhere else.

:| Click to report rating    12/6/06 5 3 This doctor is very bossy and kinda mean. He's good for getting fast prescriptions if you really need them, but I would definately not reccomed him for anything serious.
