02/07/14 5 5 5 5 I didn't know what to expect when going there with my daughter so I was very nervous. The staff quickly put both out minds at ease. They were great at distracting my daughter when needed and answered all questions I had. After having a chance to let the results settle in I had additional questions that I had. I called the office and was directed with a nurse that helped me out. She was very friendly And answered every question I had and then some. She even suggested I have my dr refer me to have a test in myself given the history and concerns I had about myself. There was one question she was unable to answer so she said she would check with the dr the following day he was in. I was presently surprised with a personal call from the doctor the following day. He was just as helpful and informative and was not in a rush. The only thing I would have found helpful is to have been sent home with some information/resources on the allergy my daughter was diagnosed with.  Respond

19/11/13 4 5 5 5 I was violently ill from an allergic reaction when I went to see Dr. Doctor for an allergy test. I was literally throwing up in a basin when he came in to see me, and both he and his staff moved things along extremely quickly so I could leave. His nurse was also very nice, and brought me a glass of water and a washcloth (which, believe me, was needed). Dr. Doctor himself was very knowledgable and both he and his nurse conducted the test efficiently and competently. Absolutely no complaints; if you need an allergy specialist, this is your guy. I would highly recommend trying to schedule your appointment around terrible allergic reactions, though.  Respond

21/04/13 5 5 5 5 I had a fortunate opportunity to be referred to Dr. Doctor for allergies. He and his staff were very professional, friendly and caring. On two occasions after my check up, the Doctor phoned me at home to check on my condition, which I might add, does not happen too often with doctors. I would reccomend Dr. Doctor to anyone requiring testing.

22/04/12 3 3 1 1 Doctor Doctor's office is a bit like a conveyor belt - you spend most of your time with the staff, who give the shots, and are generally great. (Except the receptionist, who is extremely rude.) Perhaps this is an OK system if you are an average patient, who fits the generic settings. However if you react to the desensitization, do not expect any customized help. "Defective" patients may be kicked out of his practice for interrupting the flow. I have deadly anaphylaxis, and really needed this doctor's help. Also read carefully any correspondence that Dr Doctor sends to your family physician about you.It may not correspond to your recollection of what happened!!  Respond

23/11/11 2 4 2 3 As an adult I am with another Allergist, however my son was referred to this doctor a couple years ago & was tested & is allergic to a couple specific nuts which we've kept him away from... all of sudden last night we got home after being out & he had a mild allergic reaction. To my surprise.... with Dr. Doctor if a year has passed without a visit you are no longer active & require an other referral for 1 year later..... however just maybe I could get my 4 yr old a cancellation appointment before one year.... Anyway not to pleased with the system or Dr. Doctor's internal policies when it is known the patient is allergic.  See Responses

26/08/11 5 5 1 2 no help whatsoever, seemed unconcerned with my poor health for the last 18 months and didn't seem to want to help me. would not recommend anyone waste their time to see this guy. there has to be someone better than him in the large City of Calgary.  Respond

14/07/11 1 1 1 1 This doctor's staff-members are completely indifferent to their customers (not "patients") having to pay in excess of $20 for parking, just to show up at that office. Better for an individual to find an allergy specialist - and there are several other good specialists in Calgary - who do not "defraud" their customer of his time, or exercise an indifference to providing a paid-for parking stall. Welcome to the 21st century!  Respond

06/07/11 2 3 1 3 Had emergency surgery and due to my extensive allergies, was told I should get a scratch test for general anaesthesia by anaesthesia Dr. Phoned every Calgary allergist to find one who would do a scratch test for general anaesthesia. Found 2, then got the referral then the appointment - then Dr. Doctor's staff told me I needed another doctors letter stating I needed a scratch test for general anaesthesia and why. Got that. Dr. Doctor's staff claimed they got it, but it said local anaesthesia. Referral doctor claims they sent general anaesthesia. Then Dr. Doctor's staff said I needed a Doctor's letter stating the exact general anaesthesia drugs to be tested and why. My original doctor won't do this and wrote a letter to the anaesthesia Dr. who also doesn't do this. What a reflection on the Canadian medical system and a horrible waste of my time.  Respond

06/02/11 3 4 3 3 My body/skin is very sensitive and reacted to every thing given on the skin test. Even the saline solution created a welt. Having seen this, I wonder why Dr. Doctor didn't probe more using different kinds of testing to find out what my body is really allergic to. I feel like he wasn't really interested in finding out why my body keeps getting hives. He didn't tell me any new allergies that I didn't already know.

04/11/10 1 5 1 1 My friends had allergy test for free from their doctors, I don't know why this clinic charged me $40?! When I asked the receptionist wasn't this included in AB health care, she simply said one word "no" without any explanation. After my test, he only had quick and simply answer; I just have a very extremely sensitive skin, that's all he can say and nothing else?! I already do know that, that's why I was there, I waited 8 months to get this appointment and paid $40 for absolute no information but just hear from him I got the extreme sensitive skin?! Except the nurse who game me the test was very nice, other than that the whole thing is very disappointed.

07/10/10 5 5 5 5 I have never had a Dr. as efficient and helpfull as Dr.Joel.He has been my Dr for close to 15 years and due to my husbands job with the Canadian forces has gone above and beyond, without complaint and in abundance.I have never had a Dr. who has been on call to me from across the country, one who calls me from home on his time off or has spoken on my behalf to other medical staff in hospitials or clinics without question.I always feel like any issue I have is treated as the most importent thing and I never have to wait when I am in need of council or have questions or concerns. He has not hesitated in taking on my Daughter as his patient as well. I know as long as Dr. Joel is around I will have the best care Canada has to offer. I am moving out of province and have already been in contact with Dr's that Dr.Joel has spoken to on my behalf. In todays world finding Dr's across Canada is a challange, finding Dr's who truely care about their patients is even more rare. Dr.Joel is such a Dr.  Respond

22/09/10 5 5 5 5 Wow,I can hardly believe the negative reviews. I have never been to a specialist who was so kind and respectful. 14/01/10 3 4 1 1 My teenage son suddenly went into anaphylaxis in the spring of last year. Our first visit to Dr. Doctor was fine, even though the skin test did not show any results. Dr. Doctor said that it was probably a onetime occurrence and we took it as that. Then 4 months later one night my son came to me and could hardly breathe. We administered the EpiPen and rushed to emergency. we went back and this time he seemed irritated to see us. We went through the whole spiel of what my son consumed before the attack. Nothing related to the previous episode. Dr. Doctor suggested possibilities of what it might be and said that no further test will be done. I asked him if he could sign a form for school so that we can have an EpiPen for him there. He said that it is all in my mind and I am overreacting and stormed out of the room. I do not know about other people. But I did not like seeing my child struggling for air and do not think that was overreaction or all in my mind. I will NEVER go back to him.  See Responses

19/05/09 5 5 5 5 After 39 years of botched diagnoses, missed diagnoses and indifference ("it's all in your head...it's stress....") Dr. Doctor was one of two physicians who was instrumental in getting me on the road to wellness. I have a rare blood disorder and it's through Dr. Doctor's knowledge, care and treatment that I am now diagnosed and living symptom-free. I have always found him and his staff to be professional, personable and knowledgeable. He takes an interest not just in the symptoms but in the whole person; he never seems rushed; he is always prepared when I walk through the door; a good listener. His approach is minimal drugs for maximum health, and a reminder that when it comes to rare diseases, I need to be my own advocate. It was an oral surgeon who referred me to Dr. Doctor's office...and it was ultimately Dr. Doctor who solved the mystery and (for the first time in my life)enabled me to live a normal, healthy life.  Respond

29/04/09 3 4 1 1 Both my daughter and I have suffered severe anaphalactic reactions, always to food. Yet the doctor's skin tests showed absolutely nothing for both of us. He was very dismissive and basically implied it was all in my head. I don't know how my or my daughter's minds can produce hives and swelling. Anyway, a big waste of time and money, and the worst part is I have to figure this whole allergy thing out by trial and error on my own. A useless doctor.

06/03/09 5 5 5 5 Dr. Doctor is very considerate and kind in his nature when treating patients. although he is very straight to the point and doesn't waste time, i'm not there to discuss anything but a POSSIBLE allergy. Many people are disatisfied with him because he doesn't treat what THEY presume is an allergy. This man has a high knowledge base, so obviously he would know better than the patient if they in fact have an allergy. ALL DOCTORS ARE SLIGHTLY ONE SIDED IN ORDER TO MAKE SURE THEY EXTRACT NEEDED INFORMATION. patients need to remember that the Doctor is called that for a reason, and the patient as well. Another thing... if he's widely recommended by other doctors, there is obviously a reason for this. and the reason the wait is so long to get in...there's only a handful of allergists in calgary! and everyone under the sun has some "allergy".  Respond

24/04/08 1 3 1 1 Very Disapointed! You will waste your time! I gave him two chances as I thought the first time possibly he was having a bad day. The second time I brought a friend and he was still arrogant and very narrow minded. Find another allergist I had to wait a year to have 2 Bad experiences with Dr. Doctor. He did not have the time to listen to me and he was very arrogant and in a hurry both times. He would not help me and said there is nothing he can do for the allergies and would not even consider any blood work or testing! He made up something to get me out of his office. I have gotten to the root of my allergies and found an allergist who did loads of tests and the new allergist said that Dr. Doctor "did much of nothing". I am healthy now.  Respond

12/03/08 5 4 5 5 He really helped me understand my allergy and and told me that even thogh there are no guarantees in life, he was pretty sure of his diagnosis. He also explained to me that everyone who gets stung right on the jugular vein will react faster than being stung anywhere else. He said that it was up to me as to whether or not I wanted to carry an epipen. His ability to to make me feel comfortable about the testing proceure helped alot.(I am terrified of needles). Dr. Doctor spoke in laymans terms and did not speak down to me. His staff is also professional andcomforting  Respond

11/03/08 5 5 5 5 Took our 7 month old daughter in for allergy testing to find the cause of eczema. Dr. Doctor was very personable, knowledgeable and went out of his way to see us quickly. The nurses there that did the testing on our little girl were very friendly and kind, our daughter wasn't the least bit frightened or hurt by the testing.  Respond

13/01/08 3 5 2 4 Negative experience. He did not have the time to listen to us and we found him to be very rude and in a hurry. Almost a year wait. Did not do a test we requested and had to go back and do it again. Will definately try to find a different allergist.  Respond

12/12/07 3 4 2 4 I absolutely agree with the previous poster saying they waited a long time for their appointment and then when they met with Dr. Doctor it was a one sided conversation and they didn't get to explain why they were there. He didn't want to hear about any past allergy testing (I moved here and had to find a new allergist and I waited a year to see him). He shrugged off any of my previous allergists recommendations and basically ignored my reason for being there, I received very little information and felt like I was pushed out the door without addressing any of the reasons I had sought an allergist in the first place! I had to call for a fax of what i had been tested for later and what I received didn't even have the nurses full assessment of the skin test. My personal opinion is that he sees only what he wants to and doesn't try or have to time to really listen to patients. I was really upset after this appt and won't go back, anaphylactic reaction or not :(  Respond

30/11/07 2 2 1 1 Waited 2 years for the appt I met with Dr. Doctor before testing but it was a one sided conversation i didn't get to explain the reason i was there.I was tested only for food allergies it was negative After testing the conversation remained one sided and I left the appt feeling totally disgusted. I was not giving any info on the testing, I found that strange so i called the next day and got a fax sent as to what i was tested for. only food allergens I was supposed to have been tested for airbourne as well. If i would have been able to have a conversation this could have been avoided. Conveniently I was able to go back and get tested again funny how that worked! tested 2nd time with antihistimes in my system? Funny how that works the first time you are told not to take them for 4 days before testing. 2nd testing was basically the same negative results 2 visits to the dr a onesided conversation with Mr. Arrogant no results. I Would NOT Recommend this Doctor -1000. Save your time and money.  Respond

10/11/07 5 5 5 5 I read many of the comments made about Dr. Doctor before I actually saw him this week & I must say I was apprehensive, given all the negative ones. I don't know where they come from. He was helpful, friendly, very prompt, and I thought he took time and explained everything very clearly and didn't rush at all. I had to wait for a year to get the appointment and & expected to be unhappy. I wasn't. It was the perfect appointment. His nurse was WONDERFUL as well. I don't have complicated allergy issues, and maybe that's the difference but I won't recommend Dr. Doctor whole heartedly.  See Responses

27/09/07 3 3 1 1 For a Doctor with all of his background and schooling he sure doesn't use it. He took over patients from a previous doctor with a rare blood disorder. Once you visit with him, he's only concern is giving you a steriod with many side effects. He does not listen to the patient and give them what they need. HOMECARE!! With someone with a blood disorder and living daily with it. He makes you feel like you know nothing about it and he knows everything. He's not a hematologist, he's a immunologist. Taking on new patients for money is not the right way to go. Please refer rare blood disorder patients to a certified hematologist.  Respond

30/05/07 5 1 3 I have very serious allergic reactions from time to time. After waiting for a year to see him, I was expecting he'd dig at least a bit into the reasons behind my allergy. But right after the test for $25, which showed nothing, he said that he can't suggest any treatment for my condition. That was it. 02/04/07 4 4 4 I found him quite friendly and easy-going, but to a certain extent, his laid-back attitude did raise some red flags. I realize that a lot of ppl thought it was rather "generic" of him to ask everyone to do a skin test, but what else would you suggest? Most of us are referred to him for allergies or suspected allergies...without doing the tests, he wouldn't be doing his job. Just b/c we have to pay, it doesn't mean it's the "wrong" route to take!  Respond

30/03/07 5 1 2 Very unhelpful. Even though his recommended course of action did not alleviate the problem and causes major side effects he would not consider other treatment options. 14/01/07 3 2 2 This guy needs to do more than just charge 25 bucks to prick your arm, see what "comes up", and then prescribe a general antihistimine... the same one you've been taking for a year. He's one of the few allergists we Calgarians are referred to, and he can't be bothered to be a bit more forward thinking than this?!? Why bother when you've got a monopoly, I suppose. To be fair the others, including Dr. Cross, are no better. Will we Calgarians ever demand, and finally get, better service???
