Dr. Baker was the first rheumatologist I went to - he was reputed to be the BEST on Vancouver Island. He is not very open to inquiries about alternative treatments. I was treated very poorly by Dr. Atkins when I inquired about alternative treatment. He pushed himself back in his chair, and stated that he could not treat me, that I needed to leave his office and he would refer me to a different doctor who was more "progressive". I have never had such an experience with a Dr. before and left his office in shock before I burst into tears in the car. For someone newly diagnosed and told to take medications with potentially damaging side effects, it is perfectly natural to ask about less destructive forms of treatment and be treated with respect. I believe it is best to do your own research and ask intelligent questions - but beware: ask ones he does not like and you can find yourself a new doctor.

I learned more from my one appointment with Dr. Atkins, then i did in the 10 years i have been going else where. Dr. Atkins even made an appointment with myself on his day off. I have no complaints, other then i wish he was my full time Dr.

Dr Atkins is my Rheumatology (Arthritis) specialist and is treating me for an agressive Rheumatoid Arthritis. My GP diagnoised me quickly after I complained of wrist problems and with 3 months I met Dr Atkins. He had me on three sets of medicine's as we had to prove to MoH if treatment was working before we could go the next step in more agressive and expensive treatment. He was very quick to realize I needed the biological injection treatment and once I started HUMIRA, my condition improved such that I could walk without support and see my wrists without being swollen. One of the earlier set of medicine did cause me to be friends with my washroom in the morning and I could only venture out for the day in the afternoon. My mistake was not realizing I could call hin instead of waiting till my next 3 month followup. Once he heard, that was it , I was off the set. He has a great Clinician Leeanna who does a lot of his testing and instructions and his office staff are great.

Dr. Atkins saved my daughter's life. He went over and above the call of duty to get her good medical service and treatment and managed her case wonderfully. I will always have gratitude for him.

When I was referred with a severely swollen ankle, he gave me a cortisone shot and said there was nothing more to be done because I was overweight. Luckily I didn't let my case rest there but he delayed investigation and a correct diagnosis for months. It turns out a piece of my tendon had torn off and migrated, which surgery corrected. He was condescending and dismissive and I would never recommend his services.

Dr. Atkins is a life-saver...literally. I came to him from Alberta where I'd been trying, and failing, one drug at a time. I was miserable. Dr. Atkins was referred to me by a friend who has been seeing him for years. He began treating my RA immediately and aggressively placing me into remission almost instantly. Over time started backing off some of the medication as it became apparent my illness was now under control. He is also sensitive to my pocketbook. I once had a question about an expensive medication and called his office to discuss with him. He wasn't available for the telephone but called me back on Saturday morning when his office was closed, his staff was off for the weekend but, he was still working...keeping up with the needs of his patients. He is awesome!

Very strange indeed. I posted a message on here several weeks ago and it appears it has now been taken off. Perhaps it wasn't 'glowing' enough? hmmm Interesting.

Dr. Atkins has been my doctor for 11 years and has treated me with respect, great knowledge, has gone out of his way to find treatments for me(difficult to treat RA with lots of side effects to meds which he has caught quickly!), has an incredible staff which stays on top of things. He has referred me to other rd's when needed and checks his ego at the door - I appreciate that! When in a major flare he even saw me Christmas Eve at 4:00 - most appreciative. He is up to date and when not punctual I know it is because someone else needed him worse than me. He communicates very well with my doctor.

He takes the time to ask questions, answer my questions and he always asks how everything in my life is - not just what he is treating me for. He remains current and even has a website.

I have been seeing Chris Atkins for two years now for both rheumatoid osteoarthritis. He has managed to treat the pain and slow the progression. He is a "no nonsense" professional. He is extremely well educated and the most knowledgeable person I have met in this field. I personally enjoy his professionalism and sense of humor. Some other people that I have talked to find him short on "bedside manner", but he deals with the problem and the solutions.

No nonsense. Blunt, and truthful. Willing to go to bat for you to maintain diagnosis and treatment. Likes some of the new treatments that are in testing stages. Willing to research treatments (medications) - I have some allergies, etc. and he called Harvard School of Med. to check on "olden" medications from over 40 years ago that may still be available in a more natural format.

I did not like the treatment that I received. He prescribed a medication that made me sick and was not working, then refused to prescribe another one, I had severe inflamation for over one year (on the medication that was prescribed) which ultimately caused irreversable severe joint damage in my left wrist. My first rheumatologist had died so I had to change Dr's and he would refuse to prescribe the medication that put me into remission the first time. This medication he prescribed was done so without xrays, blood tests, or follow up blood tests. I had to change Drs again to get any help.
