06/06/14 5 5 5 5 Dr. Spafford put tubes in my two year old sons ears this morning. We got in on short notice cancelation so I had never met him before. I looked him up on rate your md and was hesitant, given his negative reviews. However I did read that he is good at what he does. I was pleasantly surprised when I met him. I was prepared for arrogant and rude and he was neither. He was polite, professional and good with my son. He was in a bit of a hurry but how is he supposed to stay on time if he wasn't? Then people would complain about waiting too long. Excellent experience and I would absolutely see him again and highly recommend him. I'm not one to comment on these things but after reading all the negative about this doctor, I feel people need to know more great experiences. Great experience! !  Respond

11/04/14 4 3 1 4 Dr. Spafford is extremely knowledgeable but lacks time and compassion with his patients. I suppose the time delays may have something to do with SK Health care being understaffed and a chronic backlog. His bedside manner and arrogance is something that cannot be forgiven.  Respond

21/03/14 1 1 1 1 I have noticed all of the negative comments concerning this so called doctor and I myself have no good words to say about this person as he has ruined my life , took it upon himself to do more than what I had been told was going to be done . I have had to give up my job can not do any of the things that I used to do and am in constant pain and discomfort all for no reason. I have contacted the client representation people at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon 1-800-655-5066 and would hope that all you other unsatisfied people do the same as people like this so called doctor should not be allowed to do whatever they want when it comes to another human being. It took over a year and a half for my family doctor to obtain a copy of the operation procedure report and thus have found out what had been done to me that should not have , also the report has not been proofed or signed in all this time just about three years.  Respond

03/03/14 1 3 4 5 Dr. Spafford is very knowledgeable, I will give him that but he is very arrogant, not good with kids and doesn't really care about how you feel. His receptionist is extremely rude, hangs up the phone on your without saying good-bye and is not understanding at all. Maybe both parties need to be on the receiving end of things! You get what you give in life. Be a little more compassionate and understanding!  Respond

07/02/14 3 4 2 5 Both myself and my daughter have been seen by Dr Spafford. He has the most horrible bedside manner ever!! His knowledge is good, but he needs a personality! I had an appt to see him and he was more concerned with talking about someone rather than why I was there.....frustrating! He removed my daughters tonsils many years ago and did a great job but never spoke to her just me and absolutely no gentleness at all, needless to say my child did not like him!  Respond

20/01/14 4 3 2 1 I was referred to Dr Spafford for my 10 year old daughter, who suffers with severely swollen adenoids ( to the point that she has been a constant mouth breather and her nose is always full, her speech an hearing are impaired). My family Dr and I had thought that Dr Spafford would remove her adenoids. Instead he seemed to have no time for us, was on his phone an talking to nurses more than seeing us. Ignored everything we said and insisted to me that removing adenoids would do nothing for her. So he sent us to an allergist, who was absolutely disgusted that Dr Spafford would not remove my daughters adenoids as that is clearly what her problem is as she is only allergic to dogs, which we don't have nor does she go to anyone's house that has a dog(s). So now the allergist has contacted my family dr to have him refer me to a DIFFERENT ENT. I read dr Spaffords ratings before hand an had a feeling it was gonna be a waste of time. And that it was!! Will not go back to him EVER!!!  Respond

25/11/13 5 5 5 5 I took my 3 year old so in to see Dr. Spafford this morning. The staff was very friendly to us and my tired 3 year old who had to be woken up 2 hours before his usual time in order to make the appointment. Dr. Spafford was very nice and friendly to my son and I and asked lots of questions. I did not go in fully prepared or anything. I have never seen a specialist before so I did not know what to expect. He looked over my son very thoroughly. I read all of the reviews before this appointment and was expecting the complete opposite of what actually happened. I would definitely recommend him to anyone and do not have one single complaint. Was very happy with him and how he treated my son.  Respond

14/11/13 5 5 5 5 My son received excellent care by Dr. Spafford, for 2 surgeries one year apart. He listened and was right on top of the diagnosis. Yes, it was a quick appointment, but it didn't to be any longer than it was. For all of our visits, I took in with clear notes to give him about symptoms, dates of infections, types of antibiotics and duration of problems - which Dr. Spafford seemed to really appreciate and found quite helpful. It also meant that I was able to be more clear about everything, instead of forgetting important details. The office staff were incredibly helpful and accommodating. The receptionist did her very best to get my son in, and was able to answer all of my questions. She even transferred me to speak directly to him on the phone. At the hospital both times, Dr. Spafford explained well how the surgeries went. My pharmacist was really happy we were seen by him - she said he was the top of his class and so incredibly smart and good at what he does. I absolutely agreed!  Respond

12/05/13 4 4 1 1 I have never met a Dr. So limited at this. He has no people skills, no ethic whatsoever. He barely took a look at my son's ear and cleaned it a bit, didn't suggest no medication to an ear infection. I had to take my son back to our family doctor for a referral to another specialist. I saw him too for my nose problem, took x rays and didn't even explain if I have to see him again. How can this dr be making money from patients he doesn't even treat politely. He better retire soon or put his act together and focus more on his profession not the money. I will never recommend you and I will let people know how you treated us.  Respond

19/12/12 3 5 3 5 Dr. Spafford is one of the most arrogant Dr's I have EVER met. I do believe that he is good at what he does...because I had three surgeries from him. However, he has absolutely no personality and makes you feel so uncomfortable during your appointment. He rushes you in and out of there in less than 5 minutes. He seems annoyed when you ask questions and comes to conclusions rather quickly. Also, I was impressed that he called me back personally when I phoned his office...that was a plus. Don't expect much sympathy or any sort of a great "bed side manner" but I do believe that he is good at what he does.  Respond

13/03/12 3 3 1 1 My comments are based on what I was told when I was in the office attempting to get help with chronic sinus pain. I was informed that "I could not tell him what was wrong with me only he could do that" and that "I should get off all the medication I was on" and also to "get a hobby". Please note that I sought help from a new ENT and then had surgery to remove a large fungal ball and a significant amount of debris from my right maxillary sinus which did resolve my pain!  Respond

06/02/12 4 2 4 5 I saw him for a deviated septum, the initial visit was quite short, he took one look up my nose and put me on the waiting list for surgery. I just had it on 01.27.12 and he was doing quite a lot of operations that week. Did a perfect job on my nose but doesn't have much bedside manner. He's not rude or anything, he's somewhat friendly and smiles, just seems to always be in a hurry. When I was waiting for him to sign me off after the surgery he came and talked to someone else next to me and forgot about me until another half hour. The nurse wasn't too pleased about that either. My followup appointment was very brief too, although he was only checking to make sure my septum had stayed the shape he put it in.  Respond

21/10/11 4 5 5 5 I am a 55 year old male who just visited Dr. Spafford. I had read the reviews and was skeptical but I was wrong. Dr. Spafford was polite and punctual. He listened to my concerns, gave me options and took all the time that was needed. 3 times he asked me if I had anymore questions. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this doctor and look forward to him continuing my care.  Respond

11/05/11 3 4 2 5 I drove 4 hours to see this doctor. He did not examine my dev. septum/crooked nose. He did not order tests. He simply stated it was my sinuses. I can SEE/FEEL how the bones/cartilage in my nose are pushing together. I can't hardly function. I know I need a 2nd surgery to completely repair it. It's been a year since my 1st surgery. By the way Dr. S. it's NOT even funny how much you look like this other guy, Doctor David.  Respond

25/03/11 1 2 1 1 Try phoning this office and the receptionist's message states she's too busy to take your call-- but you also can not leave a message, so try calling later! For that reason I rate the staff as "poor". Dr. Spafford was interested in speed, not conversation. He is the worst communicator (in his profession) I have met. Instead of giving treatment advice, or info about follow-up, he heads for the door and literally says "see you later" as the door swings shut. I dropped him for another ENT specialist who made changes to the "work" Dr. Spafford had done, and this has partially restored my hearing.  Respond

09/12/10 3 2 2 2 I did not appreciate his manner in his consultation, already having the door open and shooing me out and asking if I had any more questions. Well obviously I'm not going to ask you anything when you are already half out the door. Plus he told me there was nothing wrong with me, only I got very sick again 3 days after the appointment and was referred to a different specialist, who recommended surgery for me. Obviously there was something wrong with me. Seriously, at least show some courtesy to your patients by keeping the door closed throughout the whole consultation.  Respond

02/11/10 5 2 1 1 My husband went to see Dr. Spafford after being referred to him. My husband had ringing in the ears, headaches, fullness in ear feeling plugged, vertigo and no balance. Dr. Spafford didn't do any tests and told him he had Menier's Disease and sent him on his way. My husband was not happy with the diagnosis even though he cut out salt, caffeine, etc. My husband got referred to another Dr. he sent him for an MRI, vertigo test, hearing test, and we found out he has a benign tumor growing on his nerve in the inner ear. Now we are just waiting to see what the neurosurgeon will do....radiation or surgery. Dr. Spafford should have been doing these tests and not just saying here is information on Meniere's Disease. Go home and read it. Not happy with him at all. Will never go to him again. I had a bad experience with him a few years ago, told my husband that I didn't like him, but he wanted to give him a chance.  Respond

30/07/10 5 5 5 5 I had an urgent breathing problem due to a deviated septum. THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME DR. S. Although I still have 1 difficulty I can breathe much better though my nose! He got me in due to the urgency of my case. He may look like he came from the golf course, but surgeons should be well rested. There is a specialist shortage and doctors are overworked. As a thank you Dr. Spafford I added you to my prayer list, along with all my friends, family and some celebrities like Simon Cowell, and I named one of my many kittens after you. If this specialist seems abrupt to you just make a joke to get his attention or something. I heard of another specialist having 1000's of patients! In conclusion Dr, Spafford go with God and never forget that Jesus loves you.  Respond

20/07/10 5 4 5 5 Spafford and bedside mannors can be an issue. I asked to see him for the first time 4 years ago. I heard about bedside mannors and so was prepared to ignore that issue. I also heard from many how good he was. And yes he is excellent. I recieved top care from him. Phone calls at home to discuss options. So many dr's ask for you to come back into the office not him a personal phone call was made. Spafford knows his stuff and yes can be quick to diagnose but he is thorough. Extra tests will be done when needed. I have had my son to see him as well and found him to quickly send us on our way. He said the issue will go away that it needed time to heel on its own. He was right. Spafford also has steedy hands. 2 surgeries on my neck and looks great. I am confident in what he has to say and will see him again when needed. His opinion is worth some weight.  Respond

23/04/10 4 4 5 5 I was diagnosed with Mucoepidermoid Carcinova and was refered to Dr Spafford. He had me come in and consulted with my wife and I within a week. He explained what he was going to do and He setup an MRI and operating date within two weeks of our visit. I had the gland and surrounding tissue removed and was out of the hospital the following day without damage to the main nerve nearby. All numbness to my face should go away and becuse he took enough tissue from the area, Radiation is unlikely. He came out of operating room after to talk with my wife and daughter and spoke with me the following day. I go away very pleased with the job he did.  Respond

03/02/10 5 5 5 5 Dr. Spafford performed a parathyroidectomy on me and my quick recovery has been evidence of his great surgical skill. I had no hoarseness, no sore throat, no difficulty swallowing - none of the possible problems I had read about. He was also very patient and kind in explaining the procedure and the results of my scan (even taking the time to return my phone call from Prince Albert.) He took the time to reassure me immediately before the surgery and came out right afterwards to talk to my waiting family. I found his bedside manner while I was in the hospital very friendly, concerned and compassionate - I feel very fortunate to have had Dr. Spafford as my surgeon.  Respond

23/04/09 5 3 1 2 This doctor knew what he was doing but he was an absolute jerk about it. I have a mild latex allergy and directly before my tonsilectomy he asked my parents how bad my allergy was because he liked how the latex gloves fit, rather than the non-latex gloves. What a jerk. I have told many people to NEVER see this doctor as there are plenty out there without inflated egos, better bedside manners, and just as much knowledge. He was also upset that I was told to see him by a collegue after my tonsils were inflamed again, when my surgery had already been booked.  Respond

08/04/09 5 4 5 5 Dr. Spafford did wonders for our daughter. She had recurring ear infections every three to four weeks for several months from late 2007 to mid 2008. At our first visit with him in early July 2008, he agreed that she needed tubes (I had them as a child too and am a big proponent of them). We were booked for the surgery only a few weeks later. The doctor we were supposed to see in Edmonton wasn't even going to be able to have a consultation appointment with us until November 2008. It was amazing the transformation in our daughter - she's had no more ear infections or problems of any kind with her ears since August '08. We are highly impressed with Dr. Spafford and would recommend him to anyone whose child is suffering with ear problems like our little girl was last year.  Respond

22/04/08 1 4 1 1 Wow! Dr Spafford sure has alot of****this site. My experience with both my daughters problems was very negative. He is all those things rude, abrupt, ignorant, arrogant. When I accompanied my 20 year old daughter in to get a consult on her narrow nasal passage causing her to mouth breath, all he was concerned about was how gorgeous she was and how most girls pay to have such a fine sculptured nose. He would not even listen to her about her snoring, whistling when she breaths and her dentist's concern about her mouth breathing. We were looking for an honest and educated opinion about her case and came away flabbergasted by his comments and not any the wiser.  Respond

08/02/08 3 4 4 5 When I was diagnosed with cancer, I got an appointment to see Dr. Spafford the very next day. I had surgery within 2 weeks. He did an awesome job took time to explain everything that he was going to do, and what I could expect in recovery. His time is very valuable, and he was very short in his discussions, but he told me what I needed to know. Now, almost a year later my cancer is gone (for now) and he continues to follow up. He will talk to you about your siyuation, but he will not spend as much time as other doctors, or as much as some patients would like. Very good doctor.  Respond

07/02/08 5 5 5 5 I disagree with any negative comments about Dr. Spafford. Compared to other specialists, I found him to the point but friendly. After a botched surgery in Regina he luckily put me on an urgent surgery list (for which his waiting list was 2 years). The surgery was a good experience and I ended up being diagnosed with a rare cancer. If it wasn't for him I might not be here today. Best doctor ever.  Respond

22/11/07 5 5 5 5 I found Dr. Spafford to be a wonderful doctor. He was very professional and had wonderful bedside manner. Great with my son.  Respond

10/11/07 3 3 1 1 I'll never go back to him again. He blamed my poor surgical result on a collapsed nostril and a deviated septum. If he knew my septum was deviated why didn't he straighten it? If he knew there is no surgery to help a collapsed nostril why did he go ahead with a septo? Two years later my GP refered me to him for my apnea and snoring. Spafford gave me a presciption for a drug I was already taking and when I tried to tell him that, he turned to his underling and started talking to him, totally ignoring me. That was how the rest of the appointment went. He would ask a question and while I was replying he would talk to his underling. He never heard a word I said. I got up and left.  Respond

02/11/07 5 5 4 5 I have delt with Dr. Spafford for yrs. with my daughter. Yes he can be very abrupt and arrogent. But when it came to my daughter's surgery he was exellent, he did follow-up before being released from the hospital, and answered all my husband's questions. He also saw my daughter in the clinic the next morning - immediatly, without an appt. I have had to call him at the clinic, my call's are returned personally.(May take a few hrs. but is better than me having to drive 3+ hrs. one way just to see him.) I have noticed he appears to treat men with more respect than women. As for any surgery on my family, I have no problems with him.  Respond

17/10/07 3 3 1 2 I agree with all the comments about this doctor's manner--rude and arrogant doesn't begin to describe it. However, I could put up with the bad attitude (I don't expect a doctor to be my buddy) if it came along with some knowledge. Thank God for the internet! It saved me from his suggestion for a procedure that was outdated and dangerous. Fortunately, my actual surgery was done by a decent surgeon. I only needed to see this guy for some follow-up help which he did not provide--although he did manage to throw in a lot of abuse in a 5 minute appointment. I'm sorry that the public dollar is paying for such crappy service and that desperate people are at the mercy of such people.  Respond

15/08/07 5 5 5 5 Dr. Spafford is a great surgeon. He made time to diagnose my tongue cancer and provided very timely care in terms of booking my surgery. 02/08/07 1 2 1 1 In all honesty, get a second opinion. This man repeatedly told my dad that he did not have cancer when it was found that he did, on the diagnosis of an oral surgeon. After each painful and alsmost barbaric surgery Spafford performed, and believe me there were multiple over the years he told my family that my dad was cancer free and would live a long, healthy life. My dad died of cancer at 38. I think it is almost questionable if this guy even has a soul, considering the rude treatment he inflicted upon my mother and my family, and his long list of false promises  See Responses

17/07/07 4 4 1 2 As everyone says... arrogent and no bedside manner. If it wasn't for the fact that my 14month old at the time was in severe pain and required tubes, I would have switched doctors in a New York minute. He doesn't explain what is wrong, if you child has hearing loss, what the surgery will be like...nothing. He make you feel like you're keeping him away from the golf course. 08/05/07 5 3 3 I have to disagree with most of the posters. I found him very friendly, he even asked how my son was, and called him by name. Also I asked him to redo my son's tubes which would require surgery, and he said no. I would think if he wanted to always perform surgery he would have been easy to convince.  Respond

24/04/07 3 5 5 He not only fixed my ear problems but he also took my tonsils out - this was many years ago, his bed side manner may have degraded over time, but I remember at the time his bedside manner was impecable at the time. I was 17 and didn't like surgeries at all and he was very kind towards that fact and didn't push anything on me. He is an excellent doctor and I am shocked to see all of these gross comments on this site.  Respond

10/04/07 3 1 3 I have never met a more arrogant person ever. I came out of my appointment confused and not learning anything more of my condition. He made me feel like an idiot. I felt as if I was wasting his time. He used a condescending tone and it was obvious he wanted me out of his office as soon as possible. It is unfortunate that due to lack of health care professionals that we have to put up with this in Saskatchewan.  Respond

31/03/07 3 1 2 I was hospitalized for sevre tonsilitis. I was in a lot of pain and was hospitalized because I couldn't swallow anything so I was very dehydrated. Dr. Spafford came in to see me and simply said "You have tonsilitis? Why the hell are you in here?" I explained that I couldn't swallow and he simply rolled his eyes and told me "I guess we'll give you antiboidics here then because it appears you won't take them at home" and he walked about. No bedside manner, no compassion, he stands against everything a doctor is or should be. When the time came that I needed my tonsils removed, I was referred to Dr. Franke and he was amazing. One of the best doctors I've ever seen in the ear, nose and throat field. Definately somone I would recommend as an alternative to Spafford.  Respond

28/03/07 5 5 5 i went to spafford after 6 months of not hearing and having 4 doctors tell me it was nothing. He found out what was wrong and fixed it right away all the while being very nice and concerned. He made me feel at ease, knowing that I wasn't going to go deaf. He saved my hearing .  Respond

23/03/07 2 1 1 Dr. Spafford lacks care and compasssion for his patients. My father was a cancer survivor - cleared for 5 years. 6 years later he started having pain, difficulty breathing and swelling in his throat. He was referred to Dr. Spafford who dismissed it as a pulled muscle in the neck. He did not ultrasound or investigate the problem. Because my father was a quiet, passive farmer - he treated him like an idiot. My father coninued to have difficulty & continued to go see spafford. 1 year later spafford confirmed - yes it was cancer. He performed horrific surgeries on my dad which impaired his quality of life. He gave my father false hope at living as it was much too late. Cancer had spread everywhere. He was palliative. My father died a horrific & painful death at home with his family last year. He did not see my first born in August. All because Dr. Spafford dismissed his concerns & didn't care enough to follow through. He killed my dad. I will never forgive him!!!  See Responses

20/03/07 4 3 4 my son had see dr spafford about 2 years ago for placement of myringotomy tubes. He is a very in and out dr and spends only about 5 minutes with you so make sure you have some questions planned ahead of time. But I thought him to be very nice and pleasant during our visit with him and very good with kids.  Respond

15/03/07 1 1 1 Very poor bedside manner. No compassion or interest in patient. Arrogant!!!! Inserted tube in ear without freezing - seemed pleased with himself for being the cause of someone's pain. This man offers no help or compassion for inner ear disorders, basically tells you 'to learn to live with it' as it is distroying your life.  Respond

15/03/07 3 1 3 where to start.....absolutely, positively, the worst bedside manner i have ever seen in my life...and im a nurse, ive seen a lot. has no concept of pain management or pain control. I was disgusted with his treatment of my family member - the pt - and of my family. He couldn't have been bothered to answer many questions or explain things. And basically told her she was lying about how much pain she was in and the amount of pain medication she needed. He didnt even see her until she was in hospital for 3 days. How pathetic of this arrogant, ignorant man  Respond

12/03/07 3 5 5 Dr. spattford...Both of my children saw Dr.spattford did ear surgery on my daughter at age 3.5 was great with her. My son has nose problems. He did not want to burn my sons nose because his need a lot of work. And being so young he did not want to hurt him.But if the problem got worse. He would put him under to do the surgery. Yeah, his bed side matter is not the best but stroke his ego and you will melt him.  Respond

11/03/07 3 1 1 When I saw this Dr. at his hospital clinic for a serious chronic sinus problem, he was so incredibly rude to me that the poor medical student following him that day ended up staying behind to apologize to me for Dr. Spafford's behaviour! He scoped me & really hurt me, yelling at me to keep my head still while rammed the scope in deeper. He had absolutely not treatment suggestions whatsoever & just said "I don't know how you breathe with a septum that bizarre." He would not answer questions, took no history, & was useless re help or treatment. Maybe he's a really good surgeon (reading others here), but for anything else, avoid him like the plague.  Respond

10/03/07 1 1 3 terrible doctor, didn't have the patience to wait for the freezing to take effect when placing a tube in my ear, caused me alot of pain, knicked my ear drum causing my ear to fill with blood, and yelled at me for moving and called me a wimp, was angry because he couldn't complete the procedure. Was referred to another doctor as soon as possible.  Respond

06/03/07 5 5 5 My family cannot say enough good about Dr. Spafford. He helped our oldest son to breathe again and have a good quality of life. When doctors in Regina wouldn't help he was there for us. He is now looking after our youngest son and is the best. We love Dr. Spafford. We drive 4 hours to see him for every visit so we must!!  Respond

28/02/07 5 1 1 I also agree he is very arrogant and in my case saw me for a total of 5 minutes and never gave me a chance to ask any questions or explain my situation at all. He was on time,of course and he would be if doesn't give any of his patients a chance to speak. I would rather wait to see another specialist who cares enough to take the time to listen then to have to go back to Dr. Spafford. I have since solved my medical condition on my own with no help from him-thank goodness it wasn't life threatening!!!!  Respond

24/02/07 5 5 5 I have two daughters that have seen Dr. Spafford for ear tubes. My youngest has had 2 sets and is going for another and my oldest has had 5 sets and is going for another. My oldest also had her tonsils removed by Dr. Spafford. If you want a doctor that knows what he is doing you have to see him. We are going back on February 28 for another set of tubes and I am not worried because I know my girls are in good hands!  Respond

22/02/07 1 1 2 Was not at all impressed with how he treated my newborn when he had to clip his tongue. He tried to tell me that newborns had no nerve endings under their tongue...so he wouldn't feel a thing. My son...2 weeks old...cried like crazy when he clipped his tongue. Not happy with the way he was late for our appointment...and looked like he had just come off the golf course. Would not recommend this doctor to anyone!  Respond

20/02/07 5 5 5 I found this Dr to come across very confident in his findings (not arrogant as he was polite about it). After examination and reviewing my x-rays, he stated that he was unable to assist me with my problem as he felt it wasn't ENT related and gave me suggestions of what it could be, so I went else where for medical help and was able to get better. Although this Dr was unable to help me, he obviously knew what he was talking about.  Respond

30/01/07 4 5 5 When no other doctor in this godforsaken province would help, Dr. Spaffor helped. Yes, he seemed somewhat cocky when he explained why other doctors were dismissive with my daughter, but the end result proved he was right. Surgery went well with no complications. We traveled from Regina to see him and I would have traveled from farther away if I had to.  Respond

29/01/07 3 2 3 I would not recommend anyone go to this doctor. He saw my 2 year old who was very sick with ear and tonsil problems. Not only did he have no bed side manner but he lied to us more than once about waiting lists we were supposedly on. The only way we got results with him was to have a respiratory specialist write him a letter stating that our son was an urgent case for a tonsillectomy. I would rather travel outside of province to see a doctor than ever go back to him.  Respond
