16/11/11 1 1 1 1 Michael Farmer's behaviour torwards me during my labour and childbirth at BC Women’s Hospital was disrespectful, neglectful, and insulting. He advised me to undergo induction of labour procedure without obtaining appropriate informed consent from me and without explaining the procedure adequately. He then failed to provide appropriate supervision to the nurse who was assigned to regulate my oxytocin infusion. Without asking me for consent or permission, he conducted a vaginal exam on me when I was 8 cm dilated and in transition, having extremely strong contractions, and was unable to stop him from doing so. This exam caused me extreme pain, was degrading and insulting, and was extremely detrimental to my labour and subsequent childbirth. Shortly before my baby was born by forceps, he failed to explain to me adequately why forceps was needed but instead, coerced me into agreeing to forceps delivery by threats of C-section and by disrespectful, joking, and insulting behavior.  See Responses

16/06/10 3 5 5 5 Dr. Farmer is always interested, aware, and knowledgeable. He's always on time unless there's a maternity priority. His staff is mediocre and seemingly overbusy though.  Respond

11/08/09 5 5 5 5 Dr. Farmer is amazing. He has been my doctor for over a year and I am so comfortable with him. He delivered my daughter at BC Women's and made it SO easy, and now is her doctor as well. He was also my sisters maternity doctor and she feels the same way. I personally don't find a problem getting appointments and the staff in the office is great. I never wait more than 5 minutes in the waiting room and he is always competent and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend him to any potential patients. He is RIGHT next door to a LifeLab and a pharmacy so the convenience factor is great.  Respond

24/06/09 2 4 3 4 I have been Dr. Farmer's patient since he took over from Dr. Halpenny year's ago. When you can get an appointment he is helpful and doesn't make you feel too rushed. He does his best to make me feel as at ease as possible when doing a pelvic exam etc. and I can't fault his knowledge or his willingness to refer me to a specialist when necessary. I am, however, totally fed up with trying to get an appointment. Unless it is for something urgent, he is often booking at least 2 months ahead. He doesn't do telephone renewals of prescriptions either, so unless you get really, really lucky and get a cancellation, the reception staff will tell you to go to a walk in clinic. How is that for continuity of care? Today I was told that I couldn't even make the appointment for two months ahead, since they don't have the appointment book yet for that far ahead. This problem has gotten steadily worse over the last few years. At least he isn't accepting new patients at present.  Respond

16/03/09 4 4 4 4 Dr. Farmer is a great doctor, but I am so fed up with not being able to get in to see him. Today I was told that he is booking more than 2 months away. I was told I could phone every morning to see if there was any cancellations, but who wants to do that?! He needs to make some changes.  Respond

09/12/08 5 4 5 4 I have been his patient for the last 16years. I have nothing but great things to say about him. I have had 5 tubal pregancys and yes he has looked after them all. He always seemed to know what to say after these and when I though I could not go on. I have nothing but the most upmost respect for him. My husvand wa going through a complex wcb case and Dr farmer helped us out and got my husband to see the right Drs. I think if you are tring to find a short notice Dr thats what walk in clinics are there for. But if you want someone who cares then I recommend him  Respond

08/12/08 5 5 5 5 Dr Farmer has been our doctor for over 3 years now. I have to say that he is by far the best doctor out there. He's friendly, personable, caring and he is great at what he does. I've never had a problem getting into seeing him. His staff is also great!! Thank you Dr Farmer for taking care of myself and my family. You truly are the best!  Respond

08/12/08 2 1 1 2 Dr.Farmer has been my doc for years and with my last delivery of my son he not only rushed through to get to his tennis match but also claimed that I was fine for a few more hours. To tell the story fast he ignored the nurse's urgency of my monitor failing to be inserted properly( 2 times) and went to his office. After 2 epiderrals and an emergency c section by a specialist we realized that Farmers god complex came in and he made a huge error where I should of been delivering 6 hours earlier. I feel neglected and abused by him and his flippant attitude is so sad. Your right his practice is large because that is all he cares about!!!! All in all he is wonderful at giving samples of the newest drug his pharmaceutical sales rep gives him. So if you want lots of pills go to him. Other than that be careful people & trust your gut when it comes to him!  Respond

21/08/08 5 5 4 4 I've been seeing Dr. Farmer for years, as a woman I feel comfortable with him and have never felt awkward during exams. Sometimes I feel he is rushed, and that I have to hurry through my problems but overall he's a great doctor. He does have a very large practice and it can be hard to get in on short notice but his office staff always try--they are awesome too!  Respond

09/07/08 3 3 3 3 I used to think he was the best, but got too busy, it was impossible to get into see him and seemed to rush appointments... almost seemed he got burned out - hopefully its a phase because he was a GREAT doctor, but now in my opinion just average!!  Respond

02/04/08 5 5 5 5 I feel extremely fortunate to have been a patient of Dr. Farmer's since I was 24 (close to 20 years). During that time he has taken care of all my medical needs including delivering my 3 children, and several issues that were very sensitive - never has he been judgemental or opinionated. But the thing that really impresses me is that in all the years I have been seeing him, I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes to see him. What is the deal with other doctors??? Also, his nurses are awesome.  Respond

16/04/07 4 3 3 Trying to make an appointment with Dr. Farmer is a nightmare. If you have a cold/flu and you try to book to see him you have to wait sometimes up to 3 weeks. Seriously, I think it's ridiculous. It's great to have a good doctor, but not so good if you never get to see him.  Respond

13/03/07 4 5 5 I have been Dr Farmer's patient since he took over the practice from Dr Halpenny. I was nervous because he is a family practioner and I am gay. He was not at all perturbed when I told him. He has been a fine doctor to me (I'm now 76)--though it now much more difficult to get an appoint to see him, unless you are an emergency case. He is kinf, courteous, conerned, and when he's unsure he refers patients to specialists. He always has time to talk when one gets an appointment. He once said he was treating my problems exactly the same way he treated his dad's--which made me feel good. He is thorough in examinations and conscientious. he's also--as someone else pointed out--a sharp dresser, so it's always good to see him. But he is a man I would trust with my life.

13/03/07 5 5 5 Dr. Farmer has been our family doctor for about 15 years now. My daughter who is six asks to see him when she is ill and says he gives the best "shots". My husband feels comfortable with Dr. Farmer as well. I am very pleased with his care. His supportive approach and expertise is always evident. His communication is clear and effective. He is never rushed, always pleasant and yet is always on time. He truly is an excellent physician.  Respond

13/03/07 5 5 5 Dr Farmer is amazing. Due to a move I was not his patient for a few years but he welcomed me and my partner back when I contacted his practice once again. Very happy to be back with this kind, thoughtful and knowledgeable gem of a doctor!  Respond

09/03/07 5 5 5 I owe Dr Farmer my life... He stuck with me and QB'd the search for the reason my lungs were filling up with fluid, I was convulsing, gaining weight, exhausted, and so much more. Most other doctors brushed me off as a fat, lazy, unfit, depressed hypochrondriac... they told me to exercise, go on a diet, and take Prozac... Turned out to be severe, multiple allergies to staple foods. Took 12 years to solve, but he stuck with me all the way through it, and didn't accept specialists' dismissive answers. Transformed my life, got my health back! And on a separate occasion, both my son and I owe him our lives... my pregnancy and his birth was very difficult, but I now have a healthy, strapping 14 year old!  Respond

06/12/06 4 5 5 I was lucky enough to be referred to Dr. Farmer by a midwifery program, and have been his patient for about 11 years now. Two healthy babies later, he's been a fabulous physician in and out of my pregnancies. Even though he runs a busy practice, he never makes you feel rushed -- he always has plenty of time to answer any of your questions, even if unrelated to your specific issue that visit. His easy smile and good humour makes it easy to talk about anything. Sharp dresser too -- how many doctor's can you say that about?!  Respond

02/11/06 3 5 5 We started with Dr. Farmer with my wife's pregnancy but then because of the complications of it, moved to Dr. Rosengarten. Dr. Farmer was absolutely fantastic while we were seeing him and would have stayed with him had my wife's pregnancy not been so complicated. He was friendly helpful and just great. If a woman is unable to get Dr Rosengarten, then Dr Farmer is the next best thing.  Respond

09/08/06 5 5 5 BC Women's has some of the best doctors and Dr. Farmer is the best of the best. He is kind and gentle and really takes the time to explain everything to you. His knowledge is phenomenal and I'm happy to see he is passing it on to the interns that sometimes assist for visits. He has a very sweet demeanor that immediatly puts you at ease. I highly highly recommend!!!  Respond
