I'm surprised that Scumpia hasn't cleaned up her act by now. I was diagnosed with diabetes by her in 2005, and the diagnosis was very unexpected - especially when she told me prior to taking the test that she thought I only had a 1% chance of having it. A PA entered the room playing with a glucose meter the day I found out. She blathered on and on about what a great machine it was. I asked if I had diabetes, and without looking up from the device she said I did. I began crying, and she looked at me like I was such a fool. She told me that she might have given me the best news of my life. On my third visit after the diagnosis I had my glucose meter in my lap, and the nurse asked why I had one because my chart didn't say anything about having diabetes. I switched doctors, and Scumpia herself called me at home and asked why. I told her she was callous and cold and that she was simply running an expensive conveyor belt. The day I went to my new doctor, four other Scumpia victims were also

In 2004 I was told by Dr Scumpia I had papillary thyroid cancer. So on her advice I had my thyroid removed. I later found out it was not needed. I think the saddest part for me was that she acted like she did not care. I have since changed doctor's as lab results were lost and her demeanor to her staff was appalling. My suggestion would be get a second opinion before you do anything drastic like I did.

In my first visit, Scumpia ordered a bone density test. IN the second visit, the bone density test was performed and she diagnosed osteoporosis, and recommended I take Forteo -- a rather extreme drug with a lot of negative press. I talked to my primary care physician who said that the recommendation of Forteo was unwarranted, and that the correct diagnosis was osteopenia (much milder), given the average bone density in my hip. My primary care physician also said that I could try to address this with nutrition and exercise for a year, and see what happens. In my third visit with Dr. Scumpia, she asked me whether I agreed to take Forteo. I said I was not comfortable with this. At which point she refused to treat me any further: if I did not agree to her recommendation, she would not be my doctor. Dr. Scumpia does not seem to be comfortable having patients who want to be part of the decision making. She is probably competent but this is not good doctoring.

We stopped seeing her almost a year ago and are still getting bills for experimental and unecessary tests. DO NOT IGNORE THESE REVIEWS like we did. After a few rounds of tests that were rejected by insurance as experimental or duplicates, we finally asked for a list of procedure codes before the appointment so that we could clear them all with insurance in advance. We found out later that they performed tests that were not on the list and of course were experimental and rejected. Once they charged us for a missed appointment when it was never on the list of upcoming appointments. Once we signed in and sat down to wait and they never called us back. After waiting for an hour (not unusual there) I checked with the desk and they said we never signed in. I could still see on the sticker sheet where the "y" in our name spilled over to the backing. They will also use 3rd party providers without telling you even if they are out of network for your insurance. DON'T SIGN THE WAIVER!

Dr. Scumpia is rude and has absolutely NO PROBLEM making a patient wait well past the assigned time. My adopted mom goes to Scumpia as well, and she received a bill for a missed appointment when SHE WAS ONLY FIVE MINUTES LATE and did not miss the appointment at all. Fair is apparently not fair in Scumpia Land. I fired Scumpia after she made me wait 45 minutes with no attention, and I sent her a bill for MY time. She has since sent me another bill for what my insurance did not cover in a previous visit, so I sent her a statement with that amount removed from the original bill I sent her. I see no reason to pay this woman for another thing, especially now that she has wasted my time and owes me for it.

I agree with the reviews above, in the past I have been to my appointments with Dr. Scumpia, I have been 'cared' by a P.A. only (different one every time), and haven't seen the doctor. The first time I met with Dr. Scumpia she was in a hurry, she left the room after being there for about 5 minutes and left the P.A. to answer any questions that I might have. In my opinion, it is better to go another doctor than to waste your time, money and Health Care Options! Dr. Scumpia obviously doesn't care about her patients, she is just there for the money...My advice is, find a new Dr., her expertise is of no value to the patient when you can't see her even though you are paying for such service and care...Another advice to everybody who plans to NOT keep her as a doctor, please cancel all your appointments or they will send you a $50 NO-Show Charge!

This doctor gave me a test that troubled my family practice doctor. This particular test made me severely ill. Not only did they not care how sick this testing made me but they started accusing me of owing them money when I tried to make a followup appointment. This office refused to see me stating that I owed them an amount of money. I found another doctor.

If you are looking for a responsible professional Doctor, Dr Scumpia is absolutely NOT the one. She is rude and careless with patients; She know all the medicine I was taking, yet she prescribed me Synthroid without given me proper warning on my medicine interaction. I have to find out myself after I had problems by reading the medicine information sheet. What kind of Dr does this?
She also will run every bit of tests she can possibly get away with to charge you or your insurance more and more $$$.

This place is a joke. Out of 3 visits, I've yet to lay eyes on this woman. See an assistant each time and even they don't give you the same info. LOTS of tests run...make you feel like you have a major disorder only to have each of them come back NORMAL! It's just to rack up a huge bill, most of which insurance won't cover, hence the "waiver" they want you to sign. Demanded my records from other doctor which are totally irrelevant to endocrinology yet "Dr Scumpia" (although I never saw her) said that she couldn't properly diagnose me without them. What a load of crap! They go on & on about how she's been a MD for 33 years but a quick check of Texas Medical Board shows her here for 19 years and it's well discussed that she's been given the boot out of 3 major medical groups such as Austin Diagnostic Center. RUN don't walk to another Dr if you want true endocrinology care. SHIESTER DELUXE!!!

Dr Scumpia and her office staff are unprofessional and unhelpful. She runs too many tests and does her best to bilk money out of you AND the insurance company. I signed the waiver but I have no intention of paying the fees. After she overcharged my insurance company for various tests, she is trying to overcharge me for the amounts that the insurance company will not pay. Her office refused to assist with any explanation or pre-certifications of tests. I will never go to her office again ... and I will issue a complaint about her with the insurance company. I suggest others do the same ... and file a complaint with the Texas Medical Board!!!

Dr. Scumpia can be very abrupt and abrasive, especially when she's running behind. From experience, I attempt to get the first appointment in the morning. If you're later in the day, expect your appointment to be late. I was lucky enough to start off on her on the right foot from the beginning (I've been a patient for nearly ten years) and I've never had major problems with her. If she thinks you're an idiot, she will treat you as such. If she concludes that you're intelligent, she's OK (it seems to help if you are familiar with medical terminology and display that on your first visit). On the other hand, her physician assistants do order unnecessary tests (including the bone density), and you never see the same PA twice in a row. Another problem is that the office participates in a LOT of drug studies and often takes those people ahead of the "real" patients. I believe that causes a lot of the delayed appointments.

I have never met a more impersonal doctor in my life! As a new patient I expected her, at the very least, to show interest in my symtptoms and medical history. Instead she staired at the computer the entire 5 minute visit. Yes,5 minutes for a new patient visit! If I tried to explain my medical history she cut me off. Would not explain anything to me. The only time she looked at me was when she asked how my periods were when I had just told her I hadn't had a period in two years. SCARRY!!! After reading the previous posts I now realize it is because I have no health insurance and told her I couldn't afford a huge medical bill. $513 later I regret having seen her and unfortunatly I have to go back to get my lab results.

This is the worst office I have ever been to. The staff is rude, and talk to patients like they are children. You are treated like a number and not a person. SCUMPIA is good, but you will never see her. The office is run by PAs. You get a different recommended treatment each time you visit (since you never see the same PA twice, and they all disagree with each other and with Scumpia - making you have trust in none of them). My wait has never been LESS than 1.5 hours (waiting room or sitting in a treatment room alone). I have found a better situation/doctor.

PAs running an endocrinology office is ridiculous. It is all about money. Like the rest of the comments, I have seen this doctor once in the last 2-3 years and I got chewed out left and right because I asked to see her because the meds I was on weren't working. To have PAs handling a serious disease such as diabetes is inexcusable. I have had several issues over the past years related to the meds that the PA couldn't answer, didn't answer. My primary care Dr. addressed them and told me what to do. I then had to go back to the PA and tell her what the problem was. The PA nags me to have the bone density test which is so unrelated to diabetes it's absurd. I don't want my body exposed to radiation every year so they can see my bones and I'm sure this is about the money to pay for the stupid machine. I get chewed out if I miss an appointment and they will change my meds a little and call me back just about ever 6 weeks. This isn't caring about the patients. Ridiculous. I'm Done.

I don't think I have ever been more frustrated with a doctor!!! After months of tests...including a bone density test completely unrelated to the problem or symptoms...Dr Scumpia decided that my problem was just my weight and that if I wasn't so "lazy" and would pay for her 800 calorie diet plan food that I would be just fine. I found out later from my primary doc that my cortisol level was up and that I did have the suspected exogenic cushings that she kept telling me I didn't have. The PAs were genuinely trying to help, but Dr Scumpia appeared to care less about anything but my wallet. I would never go to her again and will never suggest that any one should!

I do not recommend this doctor at all. She isn't knowledgeable and refuses to answer any questions even when I was told I may have cancer. She was rude, unprofessional, aggressive, and mad that I asked her any questions. It was only the 2nd time I saw her in three years of going there. She even commented about how her PAs don't know anything. It's a cattle call and they don't care about you as a patient at all. She is condescending and belligerent. I will not go back to her!

Run away! This doctor schedules 20-30 patients all for the same appointment time. I waited three hours in her office to see her for 5 minutes. She ran unnecessary tests, lots of them, and still had no answers for me. Her PA had no idea how to prescribe the (very common) thyroid medicine I take. Her lab people were also rude and unprofessional.

Was diagnosed with thyroid disease by a doctor who was not a specialist in Endocrinology. Felt better but not great. I knew I needed to find a specialist. Was attracted to Dr Scumpia by newspaper ads and the positive results I found on the web. Have been under Dr Scumpia's care for almost a year and I feel great. However like many of these reviews, it has come at a cost. I feel like I have been over tested for $$$ in her pocket. Last visit I had an 8:00, first appointment of the day visit. ha ha I waited an hour to see a rushed, disorganzied nurse for results from tests. Total waste of time and money. She could have called me with the results. It is a cattle car operation. Even though I feel so much better, I know I can be treated better and I am looking for another doctor.

I work in the medical field, and I've never heard more dissatisfaction with a physician than I've heard regarding Dr. Scumpia. Patients routinely feel rushed, ignored, over tested, and her office functions to generate money, not to care for people. The general feeling is that expensive tests are ordered unnecessarily to increase Dr. Scumpia's income. Stay away.

I never waited any less than an hour and a half to see the doctor. Then, at most, she spent maybe two minutes talking AT me. I mainly saw nurse practitioners that didn't know how to answer my questions. They seemed to be reading from script cards. They never even let me see my bloodwork results. When I asked for my medical records, they wanted to charge me $25. I am seeing a different doctor now.

I saw Dr. Scumpia several years ago when I was first dianosed with hypothyroidism. At that time I was so sick even though my family doctor had already started me on synthroid three months earlier. I was dizzy, confused and couldn't remember or comprehend information. I was alone in Austin so I didn't have anyone to help me through the diagnosis process with so many different doctors. My first visit she was rude and unprofessional. She would not return my calls. Her nurse told me the doctor would call me back to discuss. She left a message when she knew I wanted to talk. I paged her but no response. I refused to accept that as responsible behavior from a doctor and had to page her 3 more times. When she finally called she told me "I CAN'T HELP YOU!" I've never had such a rude and insensitive in my entire life, but it seems to be the norm in Austin. I see Dr. Moore now who I live very much.

The following is my opinion based on my experience dealing with Dr. Scumpia as her patient. I no longer see Dr. Scumpia due to my own choice. Dr. Scumpia schedules appointments for times when she will be out of town. The average wait to see her with an appointment is about an hour. Her staff is distant and uncoordinated to rude. Their billing is a disaster. Dr. Scumpia is cold and seems distracted and disinterested. Orders tests that would cost me nothing if done at a participating lab, cost me $100 for the test that I had to get at a pharmacy. Would not recommend unless absolutely no other option.

Feels like a cattle call in her office - patients crowded everywhere & long wait. Her nurse practitioner was fine. 2 visits & Dr. Scumpia did NOT look at patient even one time. More confused when we left than when arrived. Tossed it all up to a total loss & went to Dr. Paul Moore at ADC - where we were treated like human beings with compassion, care, professionalism. Would not go to Dr. Scumpia again, would not advise anyone else to go to her either.

Definately avoid if you really want answers. On first visit, I came in with specific problems and she noticed several more all indicative of a hormonal problem. When test results came back negative, she changed her tune 180 degrees and was very condescending and mean claiming that I just needed to lose weight. I went to another doctor a few years later, and was diagnosed with PCOS. Not only was Scumpia unhelpful, she was condescending and rude. She also would not explain anything.
