Ratings for Dr. Timothy J. Johans
4.3
Dr. Johans is the top pick for neurosurgery, hands down. His diagnosis to completing the surgery was less than two weeks. His staff is supportive, professional, and caring. He completed a c4-c7 fusion surgery on me, and I could not be more thankful for the initial results. His bedside manner is clear, pragmatic, and thorough. I don't want to do it again but if I have to, or I hear of anyone needing neurosurgery, I will only recommend Dr. Johans. Thank you for giving me my life back Dr. Johans. March 3rd, 2026.
The first time I met Dr. Johans I had a good experience. The second time when I had to have a redo surgery due to an accident, I had to deal with his staff and it was unfavorable, was not providing with correct information, caused delays because of not providing correct information. When I had received one too many of these 'oops' situations, I was under so much stress due to pain, I had enough, I filed a complaint. I later on received a very unpleasant conversation over the phone, where he said he did not appreciate that I had complained, because if I complained about his staff I complained about him. He protected the staff regardless of actions and took me off his schedule before talking to me; after talking to me he put me back on the schedule and caused me immense stress. My surgery was really a severe case, every time I had to drive somewhere I was loaded up on pain killers that I should not be operating a vehicle. After finally having the surgery I asked for muscle relaxer, that took over a week to receive, and then it was not even a muscle relaxer that was efficient, I asked for cyclobenzaprine and received baclofen that had almost zero pain relief. Waste of time to request it. I felt this time the sabotage of not providing me with pain relief was spiteful. The pain reliever had been addressed by the hospital staff and Dr Johans, yet no medication was sent to the pharmacy. My first visit with Dr. Johans was positive, but my experience with his staff during a redo surgery was negative due to incorrect information and repeated delays. After filing a complaint because of ongoing issues and stress, Dr. Johans expressed displeasure, defended his staff, and temporarily removed me from his schedule. My severe case required driving while on painkillers, which was unsafe. Following surgery, my request for an effective muscle relaxer took over a week and resulted in receiving baclofen instead of cyclobenzaprine, offering little relief. The pain reliever issue was communicated to both the hospital staff and Dr Johans, and it was indicated that the prescription had been sent to the pharmacy. However, medication was not received until the matter was raised again. Requesting help was futile. I suspect my medication was delayed intentionally after my complaint. If you want a physician whose staff may undermine your care and postpone pain relief after surgery, this is the place. I do not feel bad that I advocated for my well-being, a neurosurgeon’s salary in this area is in the $700+k range. He can afford to staff a better assistant with a healthy memory and integrity, and also take anethic class.
This has been a while ago, but it still infuriates me and my family. When my grandson had just turned 2, he was involved in a catastrophic car accident. He had lost half of his skull, and was paralyzed on his left side. I do however have to say that at the time, Dr. Johans saved his life. It was afterward where we had problems. He was in the Elks and I was with him. Dr. Johans came in with a entourage of reporters and tv newscaster. Dr. Johans was decked out in his lab coat, and a mask tied around his neck! I have worked in surgery for many years, and I know that your mask is only on during surgery, and then you discard it. My daughter in law was in Nursing Scool at the time, and unfortunately had her externship at the same hospital where Johans worked. About 6 months later, he replaced my grandsons skull. It started to get softer and softer. When my son and daughter in law took him back to Johans he was furious! He said that he didn't know what happened, and didn't know what to do. Just before my daughter in law left, she asked him what were the dark spots on the CT scan. Now Dr. Johans was livid. He said do you know what dead means! It's where the brain is dead!!And he spelled out D E A D!! We pretty much thought that he was done seeing him. I was working with a Plastic Surgeon, who got us with a Pediatric Neurosurgeon, and also a Pediatric Facial Reconstructive Surgeon at Children's Hospital in Seattle. They said that it was common for a bone cyst to cause reabsorbtion! We finally had an answer. However, the stalking became bad. He would hunt down my daughter in law accusing her of child neglect, and being a horrible mother! He also would wait for the Plastic Surgeon to be scrubbing g infor a surgery, and wanted to know why was he involved in his case? Long story short, my grandson was doing great! The other Surgeons did find the cyst. Several years later, my insurance made me go see Johans for a Spinal Stimulater.I was hoping that he would not recognize me, but he did! He asked how my grandson was doing. I told him he is great, and that he would be in town for a couple of days. Johans told me this story that he spoke in church many times, but he never knew what had happened to him. Itold him that he was a track star, and that he was getting straight A's his office woman called me a week later to see if we could make an appointment for them to meet. She said that he wanted to make a short video. I assumed that it would be for his church. Boy, was I ever wrong! When we got there Johans was in full surgery gear (along with a mask tied around his neck again! Every single local television was there to get the scoop! He told a story that he was just about to unplug my grandsons life support, but went into the stairwell of St. Alphonsus and screamed "God I can't do thus!! but God said you can't, but I can!!" He almost took everything from our family! Johans was so bad, but...he got alot of publicity out of it. I will never recommend him!!
Another successful surgical outcome!! I say 'another' because this is the 6th surgery Dr Johans has performed on me. I trust no one else with my spine and nerve complaints/needs. He has a very 'matter-of-fact' approach, being thorough, fully explaining the risk/reward of an anticipated procedure. He does not sell 'rainbows and unicorns', yet is not frightening about the facts. All of his advice proves to be accurate and reliable. He has been attentive to me and my family's questions and concerns. He follows up personally, not substituting a nurse or PA for his interactions. I would recommend Dr Johans to anyone in need of quality neurosurgery, including my loved ones. Thank you Dr Johans!! Peter DePauw
Dr. Johans was straight to point from consultation to my 90 day check up.. He kept me informed and also wife was texted from pre-op to recovery.. His staff is Class A as well. My scar is almost not noticeable unless you look for it It changed my life. Went from having my spinal cord pinched At c-4 to c-6 and not sure how I functioned as he let me know i shouldn’t have been To having my life back with everything functioning and senses and reflexes back Highly recommended this Gentleman
Dr Johans recently performed my cervical discectomy and arthroplasty. Entire experience from consultation through surgical stay at Treasure Valley Hospital was fantastic. Dr Johans was up front about the reasoning behind the recommended course of treatment and I feel that those recommendations were with my best interests in mind. His office staff communicated well and kept me informed through insurance approvals etc. I couldn't recommend Dr Johans highly enough!
January 15, 2024. I had spinal stenosis with much pain. I couldn’t stand for more than 10 minutes before my legs would give out! The MRI showed that the nerves coming out of my spine were smashed completely flat! My family practice Dr. told me to see Dr. Johans. It was the best medical advice I ever received! My operation was 6 days ago and I am feeling great; my old pain in the glutes and legs is completely gone and I have minimal pain at the operation site! Dr. Johans did a more involved procedure once he saw that it was required for a more successful outcome! His vast experience, knowledge, and expertise again benefited me in this case! After recovering for almost a week I feel blessed for being led to Dr. Johans! I would recommend him 100% to anyone in need of back surgery! I’m giving him 5 stars!
I would highly recommend Dr Johans he amazing! He is super knowledgeable and treats you like you are family he really cares about you and your well being. I had to have surgery on my lower back and I was up and walking within a couple hours after surgery and my pain in my leg that I was having is gone! Also the Treasure Valley Hospital is amazing the nurses and staff are on the ball and care about you!
I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Johans and the care that I received. I have had 2 surgeries done by him on my spine. The first was a bone spur and I have never been in so much pain. They got me in to see him the next day and we did surgery the day after that. Completely out of pain after surgery. 7 years later, I needed to have
Had surgery for sciatica pain in right hip, and down right leg. Could only walk for 2.5 minutes and resolved that I would be using a walking cane and walker for the rest of my life. Dr. Johans' surgery resolved my issues. I have a new lease on life because of him. I praise and highly recommend him. His staff are as excellent as he is. He saved me.
