I went to Dr Murphy for my second hip replacement. My first had been done several years prior using a standard procedure which involved months of down time; however the results were perfect. Several friends had recommended Dr Murphy who uses a less invasive technnique to shorten recovery time. I had the surgery with Dr. Murphy and everything seemed to be going great. However, about 9 monhts after surgery the pain began. After several appointments and testing, which by the way Dr Murphy has not taken the time to call me with the results, I am still in significant pain and with limited mobility. His staff PROMISES he will call, but he doesn't. This DR might be a genius on his specialized procedure, but he is incompetent in follow-up with patients whose outcome is not favorable (and I have read the same from other comments here). Of course, you never think YOU will be the one whose surgery will not be perfect. Think again! You never know. I would NEVER EVER recommend this doctor.

If you are considering hip-replacement surgery, Stephen Murphy is the go-to guy. The major advantages of his surgical approach over the conventional posterior approach are a shorter hospital stay (1-2 days vs. 4-5 days), a less painful and quicker recovery, and no restrictions on movements from the waist. For 3 months after conventional surgery to replace my first hip, I couldn't bend more than 90 degrees or twist from the waist. Dressing & showering were incredibly awkward and required using assistive devices. After Dr. Murphy's surgery, I quickly regained mobility. When the postsurgical swelling in my hip subsided (~2 weeks), I could bend over to put on my socks. Less than a week after Dr. Murphy’s surgery, I needed only one crutch, and by 2 weeks I was using a cane and could drive. I did not need any narcotics for pain after I left the hospital. My recovery more than justified the 11-month wait for surgery and the $2200 out-of-pocket cost for the computer simulation of my hip.

I first visited Dr. Murphy back in 2004 as a potential candidate to have my left hip replaced. Over the last several months my condition began to deteriorate so I made an appointment w/Meredith in Dr. Murphy's office. My consultation in September confirmed severe damage & they were able to move my surgery up to the end of October due to a cancellation. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Dr. Murphy and his staff for the expediency with which they handled the entire process and I am still in awe of the minimally-invasive surgical technique that he has pioneered. It is now 6 weeks post-surgery for me and the only discomfort I have is the "good" pain from physical therapy & the natural process of my body healing. On this rating scale of 1-5 I will give out a 6!

I had a total hip replacement (computer assisted surgery) by Dr. Murphy 4 years ago, and I know several others who’ve also had hip replacements by him. I did my research on the operation and on the doctors, and I can say with gratitude and certainly that he is a master at his craft. I recommend Dr. Murphy unequivocally. I have no pain, no limp, complete range of motion and a small and barely perceptible scar on my left buttock. During a recent 10 mile hike in the White Mountains I actually forgot which hip I had replaced.

Dr. Murphy did my hip replacement in 2007. I can't imagine how it could have gone any better! He has developed an internationally recognized process that results in NO restrictions, and I could put weight on the hip the next day. It now feels like it did when I was 20 - no pain at all. Dr. Murphy is TERRIFIC. One side comment - I worked very hard on my rehab and I'm sure that helped also.

My husband was driving- not that he should have- two weeks after the hip replacement. Dr. Murphy is well respected by the nursing staff at his hospital. The overall experience was that though it was major surgery it went so well it could have been a minor operation. My husband has returned at age 74 to teaching his black belt karate class.

6/29/11 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | I have had two THRs over the last ten years and both were with Dr Murphy. Each time Dr Murphy was excellent. Not only does he care about the surgery, he cares about his patients. He even took extra time to explain the procedure to my wife in more detail as she didn’t get some things he described. In the world of today’s medicine, with doctors trying to fit more and more patients into every hour, this was a welcomed change. The Baptist recently did an impressive article on his patients and procedures so he is highly regarded by his peers. Michelle and Meredith worked with me to try and move up the date of my surgery. They also worked with my insurance company, and my work, to schedule the surgery and handle all of the (many) forms required. Anytime I called, they knew my case and where it stood. Both of them were terrific to talk to and were very helpful. Dr Murphy would call me back that night if I needed to talk to him after he was done seeing patients. I would recommend Dr Murphy. | Respond |

IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM AFTER SURGERY (AS I DID) HE COULD CARE LESS.I AM IN PAIN EVERY DAY TWO YEARS OUT FROM A TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT.DR MURPHY HAS TOLD ME (IN SO MANY WORDS)TO LOOK ELSEWHERE FOR HELP EVEN THOUGH HE CAUSED THE PROBLEM ! I HAD NO PAIN BEFORE THE SURGERY.THIS DOCTOR DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HIS PATIENTS ! | Respond |

There are only four things to know about Dr. Murphy: 1. He is simply superb at what he does; 2. HIs minimally invasive process leads to much faster recovery (I as back at work in 10 days, and I could have gone back sooner); 3. He expects -- and gets -- a $2,200 fee on the side that insurance won't cover; 4. He's in such high demand that you can expect to wait 6 or more months for surgery. I'm considering him for the second hip now. The six-month wait time is the big deterrent for me.

Dr Murphy and his receptionist Meridith make a great team. He is a great surgeon and she is so nice, sweet, and helpful. I would recommend anyone in need of orthopedic surgery to go to Dr Murphy. I travelled from another state to have my surgery in Boston and I am very glad to have done that. Thank you very much!

I had an MRI 2.5 months ago and Dr. Murphy said he would call me within one week of receiving the results. I call the office every week, and every week I get the same reply, "He will call you today." I still haven't heard from him or received my results. Probably means I don't need surgery, but it would be respectful to return a call. The staff won't tell me the truth or even check where I am on the list to be called back. It will be three months soon, and I'm still in pain.

8/14/07 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | Dr.urphy performed hip replacement on me 3 years ago. I had my other hip replaced one year prior by a different doctor. The difference between the 2 surgeries was night and day. Dr. Murphy used a less invasive technique resulting in less of a recovery period and LESS pain. I am playing golf, baseball and thank Dr. Murphy for his excellent procedure. My sister also used Dr. Murphy and had both of her hips done at different times last year. She has recovered beautifully and walks pain free now. I highly recommend Dr. Murphy. He is the best! | Respond |

I do recommend anybody who needs THR)(Total Hip Replacement)to See Dr.Murphy. I am a Karate athelete,Teacher/motivator who was on the US karate team from 1981-1989. I had 2 THRs and the first one needed to be redone. Since the last surgery in 2004, I started competing again(fighting and forms)and have won several Grand Championships in forms and fighting, and at 48yrs I am competitive with fighters who are a Quarter of a century younger. None of this would have been possible without Dr. Murphy's talents. I have the utmost confidence in his surgery and recommend people around the US to go to Boston to see him.I have to tell you that New England Baptist is fantastic at pre/post surgery. The staff is wonderful and the Dr.s and nurses physical and occupational therapists are top notch. If you need any more info you can contact me at my web.www.portlandsbestkarate.com, some of my competitions videos will be posted there. Sincerely, A.Fournier

He is the best total hip replacement practitioner in the US. I am a 54year old athlete and have had 2 hips replaced in 2 years. Murphy has an engineering undergrad back ground and has designed both the operating tools and the implanted replacement parts for his procedure. There are a lot of minimally invasive practitioners but non come close to the results achieved by Murphy. I did my home work and interviewed specialists in NY at HSS in NY and LA at Mt Sinai before selecting Murphy. For the second hip I entered hospital on Thurs and was in my office working 4 days later(I did a lot of core body exercise in prep). NE Baptist is a very well run ortho specializing hospital and treats patients as customers. Its small and first rate. He's the "go to" Dr for hips.

I am pleased to say firsthand, that Dr. Murphy is an excellent doctor. My mother who is now 81 had two knee replacements. One leg also needed to be straightened. The surgeries came out perfect! She is able to go walking everyday. He gets right to the point, fully explaining what is wrong and how he can correct it. All the while allowing the patient to decide when the time is right. His assurance and confidence plus a love of what he does best reflects a calmness that is comforting to the patient. My family believes that he exhibits the same perfection in his abilities towards each and every patient as he would if he had to advise on his own family. Thank you so very much Dr. Murphy from the bottom our hearts for everything you've done for my mother.
