I had experienced severe leg pain for some time. After an MRI that showed bone spurs and scar tissue between L4 and L5 Dr Biel suggested surgery to clear out the bad stuff and reduce the presure on the nerves leading to the legs. Surgery was performed and all leg pain is gone. Dr. Biel was very professional thruout and I highly recommend him. Thank you Dr. Biel

Some pain in the morning when I first get up, but not like the original pain I experienced. I think exercise and stretching are vital for range of motion and less pain. Glad I had the surgery. Dr. Biel is awesome. After several years of pain, tingling, numbness I finally found relief with the all dreaded spinal fusion. I was absolutely terrified with the prospect of back surgery. For 5+ years I opted for pain management with multiple injections and "burning of nerves" !! This past December 2011 I was fortunate enough to have found Dr. Biel to perform the spinal fusion after all options failed. Today 3 months out I celebrate a healthy back and resuming all normal activities. Dr. Biel and his entire staff are professionally sincere and genuine in their skilled approach to aid in my overall wellness. All of my friends all overwhelmed with my progress and rapid recovery ! I feel that Dr Biel is perhaps the finest orthopedic sugeon in the country. Considering the major problems I have experiencd for many years, the relief I have experienced after my surgery was nothing short of miraculous. From the moment I met Dr Biel, I found nothing but an extremely compassionate man with my best interests at heart. His skills as a surgeon surpassed my wildest expectations, as my now being completely pain free will attest. Thank you, Dr Biel, from the bottom of my heart. You are one amazing man.

Dr. Biel is great. He listened to me from the first minute I walked in his door. He requested the correct tests the first time to be able to diagnose my back pain. He has been friendly, supportive and helpful to not only me but also my husband. I will highly recommend him to anyone who asks me if I know a great back surgeon.

I can not believe he is rated this high. Do not go to this doctor! He will mess your back up, actually worse than before and say that there was a chance of failed back surgery. But 3 times? Stay away.

12/20/10 | 4 | 4 | 1 | 2 | I'm so surprised by the high ratings given to Dr. Biel! I visited him on three occasions, once for myself and two times for my daughter. On each occasion, he was obviously indifferent to our situations. He clearly thought that I was questioning his authority when I asked questions about our health. For example, when I asked if he would show me what he was describing on my daughter's x-rays, he said that not even he had seen them. When I asked why, he rolled his eyes and told me "that's not how it’s done anymore." His responses were generally curt and borderline condescending, and once he even gave directly contradictory answers. He avoided speaking directly to my 8-yr-old daughter to whom he was supposedly there to help, and was clearly impatient when she felt inclined to speak to him about her condition. In the end, Dr. Biel rushed out without spending even five minutes with us on any of the three occasions. I am shocked and hurt that he was so unprofessional and uncaring. | Respond |

Dr. Biel performed a fusion on my C6/C7 spine and also a carpal tunnel repair at the same time. The results of the operation met any and all expectations I could have had. I am very happy with the outcome of the surgery and would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Biel to anyone. I am returning for a repair on my other hand next month and do so without any reservations. He was professional, on time and courteous to me and my family. The surgery was (from what I understand) difficult due to the 2 prior operations I had with another doctor. The results I have had with this surgery are far better than I previously experienced with the other spine doctor.

I had an excellent experience with Dr. Biel and his staff. He performed a L4-L5 laminectomy after having a recurrent herniation and surgery only 8 months previously. I am now 6 weeks post op and pain free. Dr. Biel was confident he could take care of my issue and he did...I couldn't ask for a better outcome. The staff was courteous and quick with refills, answeing questions, or appointment changes. Really, I could not imagine a better experience from another group of people. Top Notch.

My family and I are extremely satisfied with the care I have received with Dr. Biel. He has always shown a very caring and professional attitude in treating me. I have had two back surgeries. The second was very serious and my wife had many concerns. Dr. Biel took the time to explain in detail what he would be doing and how it would effect me. He always takes the time to expalin things in a way you can understand. He never has rushe us through an appt. and is alway concerned about how I am doing over all. I have highly recommend him to others and will continue to do so. Those who I have sent to him have nothing but good to say about his care and treatment of them as well. His nusing staff treat each patient like an old friend. It is refreshing to be under this kind of care.

Dr. Biel made a accurate diagnosis of my Thoracic Spinal cord compression and succesfully completed my seargery in Dec.2009, I was back to work in March 2010 with great success. I would highly recommend DrBeil and his staff to anyone, and I will certainly maintain a contact should I ever have a need in the future. I traveled from out of state a great distance to have the seargery and distance was not an issue they worked with me very well as though I was just across town.

I was diagnosed with a herniated disc problem after experiencing sudden pain and weakening in my lower left leg. Dr. Biel suggested surgery be performed as soon as possible. He was very forthright with the risks and recovery time involved. Dr. Biel said that a full recovery would take from 12 to 18 months. However, the pain was immediately alleviated after surgery and the strength returned in approximately five months. I was impressed with his knowledge, honesty and caring attitude in both his pre and post operative care. I would highly recommend Dr. Biel to anyone.

Dr. Biel is a kind and caring man,he's generous with his time and is very thorogh in diagnosing a problem before recommending treatment. Dr Biel he is a very rude and uncaring Dcotor and I would never recommend him to anyone!he never explained the operation in detail to me . I was left with a 4' cut on my neck after he moved my throat and esophagus, to perform a cervical fusion on 3 discs,after the operation he never called to see how I was doing.My follow up visit was yesterday, I left in tears he didnt even listen to my complaints, he had one foot out the door. he is rude and arrogant. You are not God Dr. Biel, you work for me!Do not go to this doctor!

Dr. Biel is a Orthopaedic Surgeon, Minimally Invasive Pediatric and Adult Spine Care physican. He performed spine surgery on me and I was extremely satisfied. I was back to work, light duty, after 12 days. I would recommend Dr. Biel to anyone needing his type of surgery.

My experience with Dr. Biel and his staff has been excellent.I have had terrible back pain for 10 yrs., taking heavy pain medication, trying different types of procedures, etc. all affecting my way of life. I am feeling very good now; I had a 3 level fusion done in the lowest part of my back. I am so happy with the results. I am going off of pain medication now, and for the first time in my life I'm pumped about going into physical therapy. I have read a couple of negative remarks about Dr. Biel before, but the comments were about his personality. He is not a conversationalist, but he is totally focused on your condition and maintenance. After seeing my progress, he became very excited and happy. Here is the key for people having the fusion done: walk during your recovery period, and follow the advice. I attribute my success to Dr. Biel's expertise and the walking-- and of course I thank God for this new blessing.

I used this rating before going to see Dr. Biel and I was surprised that he wasn't very helpful at all! I left his office in tears as he had the nerve to say that my neck is fine without looking at the MRI that I had bought over. I have been struggling with ongoing headaches with neck pain for last 10 years. I strongly don't recommend Dr. Biel as he didn't even take the time to listen to me.

I had went through 5 years of pain until I finally scheduled an appointment with Dr. Biel. He is wonderful Dr.. I had injured my back at L5 S1 while working in a nursing home. I was on workmans comp for over year. They sent me through multiple tests, procedures, injections, even a minor surgery.Still through all of this, it did not fix the problem. Everytime I went to one of their doctors, I would get the same response, try a different career and here is some pain medicine. When I met Dr. Biel it was as if someone finally understood what I had been going through. He found the answer to my problems right away. He performed a spinal fusion. I had this procedure in May of 2008, and I have been free of pain in this area of my body since that procedure. I no longer to depend on pain medicine to get me through the days and I once again can enjoy my life and my grandchildren. Thank you Dr. Biel for everything. I would recommend Dr. Biel to anyone facing the same problems. He is great.

THE BEDSIDE MANNER WAS CLOSE TO A CARDBOARD BOX. HE WOULD NOT LISTEN TO MY COMPLAINTS OF A HURTING BACK, AND IT WAS BROKEN WITH NO DISC AT MY L3-4. HE SAID HE WAS THE ONLY DOC WHO COULD FIX ME. 7 YRS LATER, 3 MORE SURGERIES FROM ANOTHER DOC TO TRY AND FIX THE PROBLEMS HE GAVE ME AND IM STILL IN HORRIBLE PAIN. STILL GOING TO ANOTHER ORTHO DOC AND WAS TOLD SORRY THERES NOTHING MORE TO DO. DO NOT, DO NOT EVEN VISIT THIS 'SO CALLED' DOCTOR. I KNOW OF 5 OTHER PEOPLE THAT ARE CRIPPLED FROM HIM. STOP THINK TWICE AND CHECK OUT SOMEONE ELSE BEFORE YOU END UP IN A WHEELCHAIR LIKE ME.

I had L5-S1 herniated disc problem since May 2005 and was on epidural shots taking every 3 months. I was unable to anything without the shot. I saw several orthopedic surgeons and none suggested surgery as it is of high risk and might not help much. Later I saw Dr. David G. Schwartz but felt he is not confident enough of how he exactly want to do the fusion surgery. Hesitantly I have even scheduled a surgery date with him and for 2nd opinion I looked up Dr. Herbert Biel on RateMD.com. In the first meeting he pin pointed my problem, my symptoms and I felt as if I was talking thru him. So confident and came up with a precise L5-L4 fusion surgery plan with facts and that impressed me as a patient and as an engineer too. Decision made. It has been 4 months from the surgery and I'm back to normal now. He is exceptionally knowledgable and caring doctor. I'm totally satisfied with his pre & post operative service. He is just top notch. I thank him and his nurse Tina for bringing back my life.

I am very pleased with my experience with Dr. Biel. He was very pleasant and always took the time to listen and talk. I only wish I had taken care of my back problem years ago. We really liked Dr. Biel, did not care for Community North Hospital care, Anthem insurance was terrible and caused alot of undue grief. Dr. Biel was always up front. There were a few of his staff that were unpleasant, but he was super on finding the problem and resolving it!!!!!

I had severe pain going down one or both legs and after physical therapy and 3 epiderals (the 3rd lasted less than a week and I was in the worse pain yet) I went to see Dr. Biel. He was very professional and to the point about what I needed. At this point I could not work and was in pain continually and could not sit, walk, or lay down without pain. It was BAD. He was understanding and helpful prior, during and after the surgery. I had NO leg pain immediately after surgery and havent had any pain since my recovery. My surgery was 7 mos ago. If I had known all that I could do without pain I wouldve done this years ago. Truthfully the recovery from surgery was tough for several weeks but definitely no worse than the pain I was in prior to surgery. When I was able to tell an improvement in my abilities and the pain was less and less I felt like it was a miracle. I am now pain free. I cant thank Dr. Biel enough for what he's given me in my quality of life. THANK YOU!

I was very miserable with severe sciatica. The pain was unrelenting. Physical therapy and medication did not improve my condition. I was in tears when I went to him for an opinion. I very scared and reluctant about spinal surgery but he reassured me, and gained my confidence. The results have been 100%!!! I have no more pain. I have full mobility. I am so thankful to have my life back. I must tell the truth... the surgery was difficult, but it was worth it. Dr. Biel was patient and good natured and his staff was very helpful.

Went to see Dr. Biel after a bad an unproductive experience with another Dr. He was able to diagnose my problem and correct it surgically. The other Dr. did neither. I am eternally grateful for Dr. Biel's help. He was compassionate, caring and above all knowledgeable. If he can't help you no one can. I wholeheartedly recommend him. Thank-you Dr. Biel!

I had suffered with back problems for years and seen other orthopedists who pooh-poohed my condition saying there was nothing wrong or that therapy would take care of it (which it didn't). As it continued to get worse I tried Dr. Biel who after one look at the x-rays said he could help me. It was difficult surgery and a difficult recovery, but I am pain free for the first time in my memory. Other doctors I have seen for other reasons have commented that I chose the best. His staff has always been helpful and phone calls have always been returned. He is very opinionated (but so am I), but if you need a great surgeon who works out of a wonderful hospital you need look no further. I highly recommend him.

Dr. Biel has been extremely helpful with my back problems. He has been very up front with my x-ray, MRI, and treatments. I have not had to have surgery yet, but I am very confident in his knowledge and capability to help me when the time comes. My family doctor recommended Dr Biel for my back problem.Before my appointment I did some research on line and found Dr Biel to be one of the best in Indiana for spinal surgery.On the first visit he went over the xrays with me and my wife and it was decided that an MRI was needed.After the MRI, he went over all options with us.I chose to have the spinal fusion surgery for DDD.One of the reasons I decided to have the surgery was all the research I had done on Dr Biel.He was very confident that with the surgey I would have a very excellent recovery. Just seeing how confident he was made me feel that it was the right decision. My surgery was Dec.4th. It went very well, and my pain was managed thru-out. I saw Dr Biel on the 14th of Dec. He told me everything was going well and to start walking every day. I think that walking was the key to my success.Any time I called with question's, either Dr Biel or one of his staff responded in a very timely manner. Thank-you Dr. Biel.

I had a failed spinal fusion and herbert (I wont dignify him with DR.) would not listen to me. He walked out, left me crying, before I could even explain what severe pain I was in. In his report he said I was healing beautifully. WRONG! That I never complained of pain and I seemed to be just perfect. WRONG! I walked around with a broken back for over a year. Even the x-rays and MRI which showed a non-union of my 'so called fusion' would not change his expressionless face. I had to go elsewhere for 3 more major back surgeries to fix HIS mistake. DO NOT GO TO THIS DOCTOR. Biel told me he was the only one that does this type of surgery and he would make me 90% better. I could deal with that HOWEVER I am worse off now than ever I never leave home, cant drive, cant work, cant even do my household chores. Im in more pain now than ever. Lost insurance and now cant even go to ANY doctor for help.I only wish his wife had to go thru this and he had to do dishes,vacuum like my husband does now

Told me to my face thier was nothing wrong with me then picked up and read the report concerning the results of my discogrhms. you should have seen his jaw drop. Inapropreate contact with insurance company concerning my work related injury. A blaitant disregard and refusal to even remain in the office while I tried to explain what was going on Symptoms,limitations,how im being affected. Then accuseing me of lying in a deposition. I tried to tell him what was going on all along.But he just flat refused to listen. He had his mind allready made up and nothing I could say or even the large gaping hole''s in 2 of my discs with the innards ozzing out that showed up on the ct scan would budge him. I herd him on the phone with the ins co as i came out of the exam room to ask a question. his focas was on discrediting my doctors findings rather thantreating me.
