06/03/13 1 1 1 1 Beware of Dr Brian Leonard, retina specialist at the Eye Institute; a time bomb! He is an abusive monster. I reported his abusive, intimidating, threatening, monstrous behaviour to the Ottawa Police and to his supervisors, yet nothing was done to penalize this mad man. Not only was he brutally verbally abusive of me, while physically preventing me from moving as he was physically hovering all over me (probably views me as a vulnerable, small disabled woman with a cane), but he did not even perform the laser surgery that I required urgently in order to prevent my losing my sight! For weeks, this monster left me at risk of losing my sight permanently! He kept yelling at me, according to him, because I did not smile at him, and later on stated "aren't you glad I didn't have a gun..." in the most disturbing and creepy manner. What did he mean by that? That he would have killed me? Unfortunately, fighting for our fundamental rights in Canada, when it comes to abusive doctors is impossible.

03/01/13 5 5 5 5 Dr.Leonard walks on water. He had the patience to test my eyes over a 10 month period using the most advanced testing techniques. My fear was not unfounded. Retinal damage was caused by drug toxicity which another ophthalmologist dismissed since blindness is a RARE side effect. Dr. L assured me that the condition would not worsen since quitting the drug. Thank you Dr. Leonard  Respond

12/05/12 5 4 5 5 Dr Leonard rocks ! I had a serious eye condition, with complications, and had to have complex emergency eye surgery. Two months afterward, the affected eye was back to 20/20 and no reason to think I'll have any further problems. I was waaay stressed about it all, but Dr. L's calm and compassionate manner was a great help. Also very reassuring was how his decades of experience in, and commitment to, helping people maintain their vision showed. He just had a really competent air - and of course the successful result speaks for itself. (Staff was awesome too, answered a lot of questions, etc).  Respond

20/12/11 5 5 5 5 I was referred to Dr Leonard in Sept 78 with what was diagnosed as malignant ocular melanoma. He,together with Dr. Maroon of the Ottawa Cancer Clinic treated this agressively for two years and he subsequenntly monitored the situation for an additional 25+ years. There has been no reoccurence or any related problems. I cannot say enough good things about this gentleman.  Respond

11/11/11 1 1 1 1 This is the only doctor I ever called the College of Physicians and Surgeons to complain about. I was met with hostility both from his receptionist and Dr. Leonard with 20 minutes of complaining about being 5 minutes late to my appointment. Note: I am legally blind.  Respond

19/08/10 5 5 5 5 My husband was referred to Dr. Leonard by his eye specialist in Sudbury on June 15th, 2010 but he was told that it could take up to 3 months. However, we got an appointment to see him at the Ottawa hospital on June 22nd; he ran all kinds of tests on my husband; talked to both of us; asked if his interns can sit in during all tests results; was very polite (and so were the interns); explained everything to both of us in great detail and in simple words (not medical terms). Scheduled eye surgery for the next morning; then met with both of us on the Thursday (June 24th); removed the patch from my husband's eye; checked it out; told us we can go back home but my husband was to put eye drops in his eye for the next 3 weeks and arrange to see the eye specialist in Sudbury at that time. He did a wonderful job. My husband can now see very clearly from his eye. If anything happens to his eye in the future, we will definetely ask to go back to see him. GREAT DOCTOR with very good manners  Respond

30/10/08 5 4 5 5 My aunt was born was born deaf and lost vision in her right eye in 2005 at age 74. She began having problems with her left eye - her only remaining window to the world in 2006 - we were ultimately referred to Dr. Leonard. While her condition - a rare one called PVR - has resulted in gradual loss of sight, Dr. Leonard gave her nearly three years of vision she would not otherwise have had. He is compassionate, patient and has gone above and beyond the normal duties of a doctor more times than I can count. If you have eye problems, you could not be in better hands than with Dr. Leonard.  Respond

08/04/08 5 5 5 5 After being told I might be legally blind inside a year if I didn't have experimental surgery, I went to him for a second opinion and thank God I did. He told me the operation could make the problem worse and said that, although one eye couldn't be fixed, there was a 70 per cent chance the other eye would remain healthy. Fifteen years later and after getting used to my vision problems, I'm driving a car and playing golf, albeit poorly, as usual. When I left Dr. Leonard's office and returned home to Quebec my outlook turned from pessimism to optimism, thanks to this wonderful doctor. My only complaint is that he's an Ottawa Senators fan- but then, no one's perfect- although Dr. Leonard's about as close as they come.  Respond
