I had a nephrolithotomy done with Dr P. The man is clearly brilliant but that coupled with such an incredibly good bedside manner is rare. Living life healed and pain free is great. A gifted man.

Dr Paterson is an incredible doctor and an amazing human being. He is one of the best doctors I've seen in my 65 years on this planet. I can't say enough great things about him. This is my first online review. I lived with an enlarged prostate for 15 years and tried everything—medications and natural approaches. Things became urgent when I could no longer empty my bladder (about 1 liter retained), leading to abdominal swelling, constipation, and risk to my kidneys and bladder. I’m deeply grateful to have Dr. Paterson as my urologist. His expertise, professionalism, and warm care made all the difference. After his assessment, he recommended a catheter followed by HoLEP (laser) prostate surgery. The two months with a catheter relieved the constipation and reduced the swelling, and nurse Julia at VGH was outstanding—calm, caring, and practical with her advice. Dr. Paterson performed my HoLEP at UBC Hospital (UBCH) on September 11, 2025. He explained everything clearly beforehand, the OR team was warm and reassuring, and the surgery went smoothly. A week later he phoned to check on me, reviewed Kegel exercises, and shared great news: my biopsy was negative. Four weeks later I’m sleeping through the night, off prostate meds, no leakage, and fully emptying with a strong, well-controlled stream. I highly recommend Dr. Ryan Paterson and his excellent team (Christina-adm., nurse Julia at VGH, and UBCH nurses Vanessa, Sarika, Li-na, plus Dr. Kumar, who discharged me). Expert, compassionate care! I will be forever thankful and have the utmost respect for them.

My father was suffering from a very enlarged prostate that required him to use a catheter. He had a middle lope and not an easy case for laser surgery. He had Multiple infections and a difficult time dealing with this very large prostate. Dr Patterson performed a laser surgery on my father and gave him a life back. Dr. Paterson totally changed my life with a surgery to deal with a enlarged prostate. By the time he saw me, my prostate's size was in the top 2%, so avoiding nerve damage was a real concern. I was suffering a great deal and I required a cathader for the 3 months prior to surgery. My surgery was a total success. I highly recommend that you deal with your problem asap and if you possibly can, ask for this brilliant surgeon.

I have seen many doctors, but none of them are as perfect as Dr. Ryan Patterson. I had one operation with him and everything went perfectly.
